Dogs that I wouldn't have would be ones with curly coats (such as a poodle) just because I don't favor those types of coats. I don't think I'd want to take them to the groomers either. Not that I mind grooming a dog often, just not those types of coats :p lol

Breeds I wouldn't own

Any dog from the toy/companion group- I like a dog who was bred for a purpose and has a specific "drive." I'm also not fond of little dogs. I like a dog I can take to the barn and not worry about it getting trampled by a horse or cow or even a bigger dog. AND, I don't like dogs on my lap. They don't fit my living style/arrangements.

Any dog from the hound or gundog/retriever group- They smell terrible (hounds) and their drive to sniff & chase is not my cup of tea. If I was a hunter, then yeah, but I'm not. They don't fit my living style/arrangements. That and everyone and his brother has a Lab.

Any dog from the herding group EXCEPT the Border Collie, Collie, Malinois & German Shepherd. Australian Shepherds tend to be too timid and don't have much of a herding drive. I also like tails on my dogs. Corgis and Shelties are too small and can't get the job done when it comes to herding cattle. Heelers have a tendancy to get aggressive. The rest just aren't my style and can't get the job done when it comes to herding cattle.

Any dog from the terrier group EXCEPT the Staffordshire Terrier & the Pit Bull. I have had experience with the APBT and I love the breed. The rest of the group aren't herding dogs so they don't fit my lifestyle/arrnagements and they are too small.

Any dog from the working group EXCEPT the American Bulldog, Bull Terrier, & the Doberman. I have had experience with each of these breeds and I like them all. The others from the working group just aren't my cup of tea. I have never met a good tempered chow and a good number of the rotties I have met weren't mentally stable.

I guess when you narrow it down, there are very few breeds (about 9) I would own.

Wow, your list sure is very defined.. You wouldn't give many dogs a chance? I don't see how you can rule out so many breeds.

While I can easily *say* I'd only own danes, mastiffs, rotties and bernese mountain dogs, I'm sure if confronted with one of those cute little doxie faces and they needed a home, I'd have a 12 pound tyrant in no time.

I won't lie and say I don't prefer the giant breeds, in fact, I prefer great danes, through and through, but...I'm also a sucker for any dog (or cat or squirrel or turtle etc) that needs a home, so I will never rule out any breed.

Is there a sticker on my back that says "SUCKER?"

I am never going to say that I will NEVER own a particular breed. Your dog has a strange way of choosing you when you least expect it. I hated toy dogs until my Lilly came up to me in the shelter and practically pulled on my pant leg and said 'Hey, down here, take me. I'll be good, I promise". That was it, I took her home and have never regretted it. That being said, I don't like Bouviers (sp?). I think dogs whose eyes you cannot see are ugly. But if one comes my way in my ambling around the local unwanted section, what can you do?
I LOVE this post! You've said it perfectly, Ashlea.

I never wanted a giant dog with jowls, a sad face and extra skin around the neck . . . and here I am utterly besotted with these Filas!

Never say never!

I thought this was amusing, too:
Australian Shepherds tend to be too timid and don't have much of a herding drive.
O'Reilly was a three month old blind Aussie pup I brought home from the shelter. He was FEARLESS. He herded the cats . . . he even herded my sister's Jack Russell - not many sighted herding dogs can do either! :D

I have my list. I know, out of all the dog breeds today, that 9 breeds isn't very many, but I have my reasons. And I can't speak for EVERY dog of the same breed, so I'm just taking the ones I have met and/or had experience with.

My living style also takes care of most of that. I live on a farm and require my dogs to pretty much work for their food. Afterall, I have to work for mine, why shouldn't they have to work for theirs?

I'm not talking down on any of the breeds I mentioned, I was just simply saying WHY I wouldn't own them.....after all, that was the subject of this thread. I hope no one who owns the breeds I wouldn't doesn't take any offense.

i'm right with you. my response to the question would be "most of them", not because they're not good dogs, and in many cases, not because i don't like them. there are many many breeds that i adore but they are not the breeds that fit my lifestyle or what i want in a dog.

It would be alot easier to say which breeds I WOULD own lol. Of course, I was alot less critical until I became a dog groomer. When you work with dogs, you tend to learn more about them.

A bealer. Someone I knew "accidently" let their beagle and agressive blue heeler (both akc registered too. :( ) have a litter. She had 6 puppies that turned out to be the most worthless dogs ever created. They all bay like a beagle at absolutely everything, have an uncontrolable prey drive, follow their noses everywhere and tend to get hopelessly lost in the woods when they escape, are very aggressive to guests, even people familiar to them. I have been bitten 4 times when visiting just sitting on the couch. When they are not biting they growl threateningly and constantly bear their teeth. They smell like hounds. Plus they all weigh about 40 lbs each. The lady decided to keep all six of them since she brought them into the world and felt responsible for them which is commendable, but I am afraid they are going to eat some kid eventually. I can safely say I would never own that mix....Ever.

As for other dogs, I do have my likes and dislikes. But to say never? Everyone is an individual, and there are probably individuals of every breed that don't conform to what's expected of their breed's temperment, which means they might be more like a breed that suits y lifestyle and I could comfortably live with one. :p My personal favorites are mutts. Unless they happen to be bealers that is.

Golden Retriever, Labrador Retriever, Beagle, American-bred German Shepherd, Central Asian Ovcharka, any designer dog, and I''m not too much a fan of small dogs

However if a dog shows up in my care it doesn''t matter what breed it is, I will take care of it

I feel like a few breeds, in my experience, that just are not right for my personality/lifestyle is... Individual dogs and mixes could definitely change my mind! I never thought I would get a Husky, even though I love them, and now I appear to have a pup who is part Husky.

*ANY of the inactive Bully breeds (Mastiffs, Bulldogs, Dogues, etc)
*ANY breed over 100 lbs
*Sporting & Hunting breeds
*Most flat-faced dogs (Chows, Lhasas, Pugs)... except for Bostons, I love em to piecesss
*Most toy breeds, except for a few that are larger in size & more active

Sooo, basically, I'm mostly a herding-breed snob :p I love all of the dogs mentioned here... but I just could not go back to almost any non-herding bred (besides a few certain breeds), after having Gonzo. He has totally spoiled me and I know that the best dog for me is a very loyal, attentive, energetic, intelligent pup and herding breeds are the best of all of these traits.

It's so changeable, though. I used to really admire pitbulls and similar guard/fighting breeds, and really NOT want a border collie, but I ended up adopting a Border Collie mix and now, after a few too many nasty experiences, never want to own a pit bull or similar dog. Also, I used to think Great Danes were impressive, but since they become rather popular in NJ, I've noticed the drawbacks - waste disposal, for one thing (my neighbors have them, and the yard reeks), and the fact that they're really freaky dogs -they bark at shadows, and seem to go from statuesque to skittish at the drop of a hat; unsettling in a 4', 150lb dog.

Ignorance may breed hatred, but there's nothing like familiarity to breed contempt.
