The #1 breed I will never own is the Border Collie. This is not to say I don't adore RD's Dakota, but the breed is simply not one that I could tolerate on a daily basis. First, I don't like "slinky" dogs. Most BCs I've seen (and there are a lot here in central IA) slink everywhere - if my dog comes into a room, I want people to notice. Second, I can't stand obsessive staring... some call it "the eye", I call it "unnerving". Third, I am completely against what many of the breed clubs are doing to the breed - illegitimize ALL performance titles if a BC is good enough to earn a conformation championship as well? Puh-leeze, I thought versatility was a good thing.

Some other breeds I could not see myslef owning are Labs (bad experiences with them, and they're too soft for me), many toy dogs (but not all - I, for one, love Papillons and Havanese, and most of the giant breeds (especially Danes).

Basically... if it can't keep up with my Dobes, it probably won't be a good fit for my household.

As dog lovers can any of you really see your selves without a dog? If the only breed of dog out there was the breed you say you wouldn't own, could you say I would rather be without a dog?

To me the Puli is least appealing because of the hair but if the only dogs left on earth were Pulis you can bet I would have two at my side. They would be shaved but well loved
Good point. If the only breeds of dog in the world were Labs & Goldens...I would definately have one or the other. However, that's not the way the world is. LOL :p So nah-ah. As individuals they're fine..as a breed, no way (for me personally that is).

Aww :( This thread is kinda depressing.. but interesting :p

HEY! And just a shoutout- Sprout is a Brussels Griffon (toy breed), but he is 15" and 21lbs! They're not all teeny weenie companion-only dogs, ya know ;) lol

Anyways.. Im NOT 100% aginst any breed. I think it depends on personality more than what a book says about them "in general". It's like judging people by race.. when every person is actually different!

But if you were talking about 'in general' breeds, then there are a few that I would kinda exclude.. although I know that there are many good ones out there..
First of all, I dont want any other dog breed lol, cause Sprout is my best friend, he's all I need lol But If I had to choose..
Beagles, I would not really like to own for many reasons. Barkyness, howliness..
And Labs are extremely common, not saying I wouldnt want to own one, but I like having a more iscolated breed or mix. But if I were looking in the pound for a dog,and fell in love with a lab I would bring it home! hah

Hope i didnt offend anyone!

Hey now, I've got no beef with Poodles! They're actually on my list od "dogs to own someday". My friend is geting a blue Standard in a month or two, and I'm positively giddy.

Standard Poodles are very smart, very athletic, very AWESOME dogs. I like miniatures and toys too - just because my former boss had one, and he was the neatest little dog I'd ever met - he knew how to put the Dobes in line, too!

Hard to say what I wouldn't own. Any dog I came across who is in need I would gladly take in and care for or rehome.

I can say though that I would NEVER own one of the golden-doodles or yorkie-poos or those "designer" breeds.

I also don't care for the poodles with the poofs on top their heads and on their legs. I like when they have all curly hair, just no poofs.

And I cannot stand Jack Russels and Fox Terriers. The howling and the constant jumping up and down drives me nuts. We got a few in at the shelter I worked at and boy were they annoying. I am sure a calmer one would be fine though.

Other then that I can't think of one I wouldn't own. I wouldn't actively go out looking for an old english bulldog or a old english sheep dog. I really don't care much for Bishons, Bedlington Terriers or Brussels Griffons either. Don't know if I spelled those right, just thinking back on all the years of watching the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show :) I think they are kinda ugly breeds. Bedlingtons look like sheep and what is up with their ears?

Cowgurl hey how come no pics ??? I would love to see pics of your dog at work seriously. Any chance. I love watching dogs herding.

Lol, usually I'm totally distracted when we are out herding and don't have a camera. I'll try to get pics soon though. I'll drag my husband out there to get some :D

I love all breeds, and would love to give them their own approach judged by their individuality rather than breed. I love most breeds.

Hmmm....Beagles and Basset Hounds...I just can't stand the bark, I'm sorry.
I don't think I'd ever own a husky- type dog either, just because all I have met so far act aggressive. I could think that's maybe because they are held in apartments and not get too much exercise.
And toy breeds....just to small.

But yes, they are all kinda cute though :)

I wouldn't own a toy. I am just a "big dog" person, and couldn't be happy with anything under 40 lbs. Exception - JRT, Patterdale or Rat Terriers. They are small, but still not toys. I prefer a dog that I can pet on the head while standing.

I wouldn't want any breed that wieghs less than 25 pounds or so. I proably wouldn't own most of the herding breeds, they are too "intense". I would probably at this point pass on any dog that really cost me much to buy in the first place, as I have had the best luck, heath wise, with mutts.

And I wouldn't buy a pit or pit mix due to the insane county dog warden and still in effect breed specific laws, not because of the breed(s) itself, Pits are one of my favorites.
