I thought they were weird looking Border Collies at first. Someone asked me if Bandit was a Toller cross. Can't tell he's a Collie but you know what a Toller is? Crazy.

Lol, I'd much rather have to repeat Papillon or Weimaraner than Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever constantly. Sometimes I try to get by that by just saying Toller, but then people seem to think I'm saying toilet for some reason, so I have no choice but to go with the actual breed name.
That is true, I'll count my blessings.

My roomate tells people now that it's the french word for 'Big Ears'. They usually believe her too, which is kind of funny.

Silly people. That likely wouldn't fly here. I would hope most Canadians would remember enough french from highschool to know it meant butterfly.

Most people just assume that Dixie and Lucy are both purebred Yorkies, even though Lucy's a Silky/Yorkie cross. The people I've told just nod, they don't ever say anything about designer dogs, but on a forum, I've had someone ask me about silkshires. Here is the pm, and my reply:

"Your dog is beautiful. We're trying hard looking for a Silkshire. Is there a breeder you would recommend? We live in NY city area but we're willing to travel."

"Thank you!

I'll be honest, the reason we have a "Silkshire", is because we were irresponsible, and bred our Silky with a Yorkie. Lucy is a puppy from the litter. If you want a Silky/Yorkie mix, I'd reccomend looking at your local SPCA, or shelter. Rescuing is a great thing to do, and there are tons of mixed breeds waiting for loving homes."

Other than that, I've never really had any problem just telling them she's a mix, and going on with my day.

i don't really have a small mutt but i have the same problem.

i got tired of telling people i didn't know what yoshi was and then them telling me insane designer dog names that i just started making up stuff.

person: what kind of dog is that? looks like a labradoodle.
me: no she's not
person: oh what is she?
me: oh you know part chi, some greyhound and irish wolfhound. oh and a little poodle to make her poofy
person: ... really?
me: yeah

My favorite is making up breed names like "The Irish Jig Hound", "the Woodle Retriever" or "the Miniature French Fluffy".

Ah, it's not just small dogs . . .

I get people TELLING me that Kharma is some sort of Bloodhound mix.

One of these days I'm going to tell some idiot that "yes, she is a new designer dog mix, like a Doodle or a Poo . . . she's a BloodyPoo."

And then watch them sort through THAT :rofl1:

People often ask if Dance is a designer breed and if they don't believe me when I tell them she isn't, they insist on me telling them what breeds make up a Toller. Either that, or they think she's a really ugly Golden or a strange coloured Border Collie or Aussie. Lately though it seems more and more people have at least heard of the breed at one time or another and I get other ridiculous comments about her... like how she's not standard and should weigh 60lbs, for one. They talk to me like they know more about my breed than I do and don't listen otherwise.

Wow, and I thought saying ''chow mix'' was annoying.

Wow. I would be SO annoyed if I had a small mixed breed... that even remotely resembled a Poodle mix. You must get so many annoying guesses and assumptions.

People are SUPER annoying about guessing Fozzie's breeds. Most of the time, their guesses just leave me dumbfounded. A few people have suggested breeding dogs like him... "You'd make a fortune!" Awww, too bad little Fozz is infertile. =,( I could've been a millionaire!

That is awesome! :rofl1::rofl1::rofl1:

I used to tell people my labrador / border collie mix was a border retriever. (This was before the whole designer dog craze.) It was surprising how many times they'd nod knowingly and say, "I thought so" or "my brother's niece has one of those."

Mine arent mixes... but when Kiba was a puppy... I'd have people come up and ask what she is. Mind you they're BLACK miniature schnauzers. I was asked yorkie, chihuahua?, and.. yes.. even (they actually said the full name) West Highland White Terrier. OMG

Some people dont believe they're pure schnauzers because they're black.. because you commonly see the the salt and pepper ones. Had some lady last month or so ask if they were schnauzers.. after I told her they were she asked what they were mixed with. Uh no.. they're not.. she rolled her eyes and walked off... hope she got an earful as she walked away. LOL.

What I love is when people ask what breed my dog is, and when I say chihuahua they usually just say "ooh" and look all dissappointed. No idea what that's all about.

Oh, you have NO idea.

Lizzie is a German Spitz (a mittel, the medium variety.) She is NOT a large Pom, a Schipperke, or an American Eskimo. (!)

I don't mind people not knowing what she is. I mean, there's like 80 of these dogs in the US. What I *DO* resent is people who have shelter Poms adopting the breed name for their oversized (and frequently unhealthy!) dogs.

Mal's not small, but lots of people assume he's a collie mix, rather than a collie- or that he's been shaved down recently.

Most people want to know if I rescued my long-haired greyhound from the track. They get very confused when I tell them that she isn't a rescue and that she isn't a greyhound. I always end up having to say borzoi several times and then spell it several times, and then they still pronounce it wrong. I've had a few people insist that I shouldn't have gotten her from a breeder and should have rescued one from the track instead.

It isn't just the small breeds, and it isn't just the rare breeds! People are always asking what kind of dog Hutch is, and he is clearly a Saint Bernard, albeit a smooth coat. When we tell them, people will tell us that he is too big to be a Saint! What???? Or they will tell is he is only a Saint mix because Saints have long fur. Once my hubby was so sick of telling people what kind of dog he was that he decided to call him a Spanish poodle and a man exclaimed that he thought so! I love how everyone else seems to be an expert on my breed but me!

haha when roofus was a puppy, people thought he was a saint bernard (i've never seen a black & white st bernard with a docked tail, hmmm...) now in the summer when I shave him, they think he's an irish wolfhound ???? go figure

I tell people Popper is a Battle Dog, which could be why they think he's a new designer breed, LOL! Blossom is my Bordermation, and Murphy's supposed mix does actually have a designer name, I think it was American Eagle Dog?

I've had many people ask me if Ash is a Puggle...um, no, he's a Pug. I usually tell them that I don't believe "Puggles" should be bred
