When I take my pair out for walks, everyone wants to coo over them. Everyone recognizes Lilly as a beagle (or the NC counterpart "One of then Snoopy dogs). Then they get to Radar. I must have this conversation three times a walk, every single time.
Them: What type of dog is that?
Me: Some sort of little mutt
Them: No, I mean is he a Westie-poo, or a Chi-Weenie, or a Doxie-Poo? What is he?
Me: Those aren't breeds, they're mixes, and I really don't know what he is. Some sort of Poodle/Terrier mix I guess.
Them: Oh, he is a Westie-Poo (or some similar designer dog)
Alternatively, Them: No, they're real breeds, my cousins sisters best friends boyfriend breeds (insert dizzying array of designer dogs here) and they're about to get recognized by the AKC.

Every single time. Not every dog is a designer dog, some of the are just scruffy little rescues who we know nothing about. Do other people with small dogs get asked this, or am I finding every idiot in the south?

Well, a lot of people assume my papillons are designer dogs too. I even had a new papillon owner ask me about my dogs and tell me this is his first designer dog. o_O

I responded that they weren't designer dogs and rather a really old purebred dog breed but he really didn't say anything.

To most people it seems that small and fluffy = designer dog.

Also most people ask if I got her from the local puppy store and seem surprised when I say I didn't.

i get that with popper... because he's so pretty and awfully cute (and because I know precisely what he's a mix of) everyone assumes he's some new kind of designer dog. I always get asked how much I paid for him, where I bought him, where they can buy one....

I get that with Ollie ....that's why I chose Chessie as his other 1/2 instead of poodle .

I know everyone rushes up to coo over Ada... unless she's walking with the dobes... ;)
People fawn over Slade like crazy too, but I'm not sure how much they will when he's the size of a Dobe! LOL

People ask me the most random things in regards to his breed;

"Is that a Bluetick Hound?"
"Oh, look at the silver Lab puppy!"
"That's a weird-looking Greyhound."
"Is that a Vizsla puppy?"

And . . . wait for it . . .

. . .

"Is that a Doberman?"

I mean, I understand that a lot of people have never seen, or even heard of a Weim, and I have no problem explaining what he is if they ask what breed he is . . . but if you clearly know nothing about dogs, don't insult him by playing 20 questions about what he is! LOL

Surprisingly, more people have commented on Daisy than Benji. I've never been asked if Benji is a designer breed though. I usually get asked if he's a shih tzu mix.

I use to get questioned all the time about how tall my Jrts are and statements that they can't be 'real jrts'. I tell them, the dogs are reg'd breed standard etc but of course I am wrong ya know. Now I usually don't bother.
Interesting although, is that the general public in recent years seems to know that the 'shorties/pud's', are not the standard.

We run into the same thing with Bernie.. beagle/husky cross. "Ohhhh.. he's such a cute (insert any kind of dog but beagle or husky here...) Where did you get him?" Explain about his adoption/rescue from a nasty place north of us, and the blank stares start. "Ohhhh.. why would you let your dogs breed if you know there is a bounty on them??" Grrrrr.. explain again that Bernie is a RESCUE, and I DON"T breed the puppies, I help try and SAVE them! "Oh, but isn't that like petstore puppy mills? If you save one, you're making space for more to be bred??"

Truly, I just smile and move on.. I can't explain, I can't change their minds, and I can't see one ounce of spaniel:yikes:!!, fox terrier, or anything else but beagle and maybe shepherd/husky.

Sorry for the semi-hijack, but man people can be stupid LOL.

People have absolutely no idea what Megan is...but usually they'll just ask rather than guess. Funny thing is, after I tell them, they'll ask me again...."now what did you say she is???..." Lol. I guess "Papillon" just doesn't stick on the brain.

Yep, I have to repeat almost every time. Have you had people ask about your chihuahua yet? (I get this one a lot, especially from chihuahua owners, who you'd think would be able to recognize their own breed)

Or Pekingese. Or Pomeranian.

I can actually see the Doberman comment - blue and fawn dobes vaguely resemble weim puppies... at least in base color and coat length:

In fact, I know of a few people who have adopted adult dilutes, thinking they were weim mixes. :D

People usually just ask me what Lucy is, instead of making ridiculous guesses. But of course... after I say she's a bichon/poodle mix... a lot of them respond with, "Oh! A bich-poo!"

D'oh.

I've been asked if Scooby was a Snoodle (is that how you spell it?). It was before he'd been to the groomers. They were really disappointed when I said no just a young and very scruffy Miniature Schnauzer

You have a point. I guess it's the ears that throw me off. Even an uncropped Dobe's got nothing on Dumbo over here! :p

I get it about ALL my dogs.

"What are those black things?"
Border Collies.
"NO. That's not what a border collie looks like."
Well, these Border Collies look like that.
"Aw, what a cute little puppy! <insert crazy guess here>"
She's a mutt.
"Where'd you get her? Do you want to breed her?"
She's a mutt.

People often ask if Dance is a designer breed and if they don't believe me when I tell them she isn't, they insist on me telling them what breeds make up a Toller. Either that, or they think she's a really ugly Golden or a strange coloured Border Collie or Aussie. Lately though it seems more and more people have at least heard of the breed at one time or another and I get other ridiculous comments about her... like how she's not standard and should weigh 60lbs, for one. They talk to me like they know more about my breed than I do and don't listen otherwise.

I have to repeat almost every time.
Lol, I'd much rather have to repeat Papillon or Weimaraner than Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever constantly. Sometimes I try to get by that by just saying Toller, but then people seem to think I'm saying toilet for some reason, so I have no choice but to go with the actual breed name.

I have had people tell me my dogs aren't JRTs. Their legs are too long. Or that the wire coated ones are 'wire haired terriers' like thats a breed. Or I get obnoxious people telling me they are Parsons and that I should know that. umm no the JRTs.
