is today.

It's the begining of Lent, a season of soul-searching and repentance. It is a time for reflection and taking stock, for looking at the depth of one's own sin, and turning away from them. A time for learning what it means to follow Christ.. a time for actually going about changing one's ways to be more as Christ would have them be.

In Lent, it's traditional to give up (or 'fast from') something(s) that we do a lot of and that we find pleasure in. This giving up or fasting is done:

- as a discipline for learning self-control, to free our minds from the chase after material things, to tell ourselves 'no' and make it stick;
- to identify with Christ's sufferings, and remember what the true pleasures are for followers of Christ;
- as an act of sorrow over our wrongdoings and our state of sin.

Lately, Chaz has lots of bad news. Lots of people were hurting and are in need of prayers. The many prayers requesting threads show that we realize when we can't do anything else, we can still pray for one another... and that may be the very BEST thing we can do for each other under the circumstances. It's reaffirming to me that prayers can bring great comfort and hope to a person in time of desperation.

So, may I propose that for the next 40 days, lets each of us give up something in order to pray for each other... it doesn't have to be big.. it can be an urge to say something hurtful to a fellow human beings, or one cigarette less a day, or half an hour sitting in front of a T.V. or computer, or the tendency to argue with a spouse over anything and everything, etc..

May we learn to love one another as we do ourselves, and treat each other as we wanted to be treated.

I'm not Catholic...but this is one religious act I will participate in. It teaches self-control, makes us think about those who have less than us, and to put in perspective what is really important.

Can others post what they're giving up? I haven't decided yet.

Great post MM, I couldn't agree more. :)

I was born, raised, and baptised Catholic, but for the last couple years have been participating in a Baptist church. But either way, I follow the Lord, and still like the idea of giving some of pleasure up for 40 days as well. The Lord fasted in the bible for 40 days and 40 nights, so no matter the religion, I still think the idea is great.

I haven't decided what I am giving up yet, but will try to make the decision by tonight.

Not religious so not giving anything up. But a friend of mine is giving up Coke (but still drinking coffee :confused:) and another is giving up Sloth by planning on working out every day and being more productive. So kudos to them I guess.

I could work on getting more sleep (seriously, this is something I need to work on. I get 2-4 hours of sleep at night) but that's not really giving anything up. Or well I guess I'm giving up the hours that could be spent more productively but that seems like it'd be more sinful (Sloth). Catch 22 I reckon.

I am not catholic but my church does give up stuff if you want.

How we see it is to take away something you do all the time and show yourself it hasn't become the numer 1 in your life.

Also I have many friend who are atheist who do it as well. Not to be closer to God but to better themselves. One of my friends who moved in with his gf is planning to get married. He is giving up pop and going outb to eat for 40 day to save money and show tori *his gf* that he is willing to give up stuff he LOVES for her.

So it doesn't need to be just a christian thing. These days when everyone is in need why not give something up to help people or yourself?

I'm giving up buying video games *I spend 400-500 a month -.- ... I know* and donating what I would usually spend on games to the animal shelter near my house where I got yoshi.

So please anyone who is on the fence about this because it IS a christian thing bettering yourself and helping people shouldn't be.

Im Jewish, so in our religion we dont do this... we have other things we do.

I think giving something up for 40 days would be attempting to follow Catholic (?) rituals.

There is a difference in me saying I want to try and drink less soda or something and giving something up for 40 days... to me it is following another religion.

I'm going to regret this but I woke super dehydrated soo....

I'm giving up Soda starting tomorrow.

And I don't even believe in goD. But it's something I need to do to improve my health and perhaps decrease my stress levels!
