Proper pancakes - not american ones :p We call those ones Scotch pancakes or drop scones.

GO, if one stockpiling what he/she would have eaten had he not promised to give it up, then eats it on the 41th day. He only partly understands the purpose of Lenten "giving up." Lent is about conversion, turning our lives more completely over to Christ and his way of life. That always involves giving up sin in some form. The goal is not just to abstain from sin for the duration of Lent but to root it out of our lives forever.

Many Catholics were taught as children to "give up something" for Lent. The sacrifices in Lent are really penance, in the same spirit as the Ninehvites that repented at the preaching of Jonah. Throughout our history, Christians have found prayer, fasting, and almsgiving to be an important part of repentance and renewal. Many Christians now add something during Lent rather than giving up something, either to address personal habits that need work or to add some outreach to others in need...

Like Eddieq said, it's an outward sign of the internal conversion.

And pancake racing...

o_O

M&M's thanks for the explanation. Fat Tuesday always bothered me because it seemed rather pointless to me to indulge and then give up.

Like I said I'm Christian but of a denomination that doesn't do lent. It's not that we don't give things up or try to better ourselves, it's just we try to do things all the time. there is no set 'season' to do so. You do it when you're called to.

Don't worry Dizzy we do it too. Shrove Tuesday is traditionally "Pancake Day" because people needed to use up 'rich' food like eggs and milk before starting lent.

Aah... I just found this in the Catholic Missal for Ash Wednesday. It's been translated from Spanish. I couldn't have said it better :)

If we were automobiles, Lent would be the time to change the oil and get a tune-up.

If we were gardens, Lent would be the time to fertilize soil and pull weeds.

If we were rugs, Lent would be the time to give ourselves a good vacuuming or shaking out or even a beating.

If we were batteries, Lent would be the time to recharge.

But we aren't any of these things.

- We are people who, many times, have done wrong and need to repent; thus the need to *make a good confession.*

- We are people who many times get carried away with selfishness and so need to start thinking of others; thus the need for *alms.*

- We are people who often lose sight of purpose for which we were created by God. We need, therefore, to recover our sight. Thus the need for *prayer.*

This is why we celebrate Lent.

and i do have to agree with GO on this, i personally dont understand why these good intentions should only be displayed during the days of lent?
shouldnt they be a perminent thing? why this month? why not 2 months on tuesday?! what about your bithday? or xmas ect...
Christians are called to give up sins and follow God EVERY minutes of their lives. Lent, the 40-day period before Easter, happens in the springtime when new life appears after the deadness of winter. As we prepare to celebrate Easter, we're encouraged to focus less on our physical appetites and more on our spiritual needs.. It's as good as ever to begin this journey.

the pancakes im used to are more like french crepes, ther called pancakes in most of europe...
there a thin pancake and can be eaten with ANYTHING, either sweet or savory, on their own or as a side, main or desert...
the popular way to at them is with sugar and or lemon juice, but as i said they can be mixed with everything and anything, i prefer sweet pancakes, a scoop of chocolate icecream, wrapped in a pancake with chocolate sauce drizzled over...or with nutella. YUMMY

the pankcakes here in america are those thick fluffy things that are kinda spongy/dry and eaten with butter maple syrup...i donts like those kind lol

I get that. Got that from the beginning. I understand the reason ya'll give stuff up (to show devotion/follow religion/etc) but I don't understand why give it up for just 40 days? I hate to sound like a broken record but I don't get why just 40 days. It should be to pick a new thing every year and give it up forever. That would be impressive and worthwhile.

I suppose this is the best explanation I'm going to get as to why it's just 40 days (else it runs into Easter).

Haha. I read your response and didn't understand a bit... so I went back and read this thread again. Only then, I realize that we have two parallel threads going as one :)..

Lent & pancakes. Who would've thought ;)

Wait, there's a pancake day? Why don't we celebrate this? It sounds like a worthwhile celebration to me. Eat pancakes and throw them out of frying pans? Why the hell not?
