But of course - I'm in Fort McMurray, which is of course catnip for many an East Coast type, eh? Although most are from Newfoundland, rather than NS...

I missed the paramedic post. If I needed EMT care I would want it from one who could leave the job at the job so not to taint their own life.

I have learned that no one on this planet knows how to party like a Newfie, LOL. And they still invite me to their gatherings, despite my persistent refusal to be "screeched in" (I can drink the screech, but I rather draw the line at kissing the cod). Taber - never been there, heard a bit about it.

Except the two are not mutually exclusive. One can have compassion, deal with patients with compassion, and still maintain a professional distance that allows them to function normally both at work and in their personal life. I know many medical professionals who are quite adept at this, so I know it can be done.

Me either, since the cod in question here in Alberta always seems to be some 3-day old stinker that they've left lying on the back deck for the occasion, LOL. Perhaps enough screech and one day I'll be convinced to do it....

Nuh uh - I'll never, ever do it in front of a camera! Like I'd want people to see visual proof of that debacle!

I dunno - they need to find some fresher cod if they really want to get some new Newfs into the fold.;)

Ok I got to say that I am disappointed at what most people are saying here... I don't think most of you get it. But you can't get it unless you've been there.

Yep, people who are truly depressed are selfish. I've had three suicidal friends, and I was close to it at some point also. Frankly, when you're in that state it doesn't matter that some people have it worse than you. It actually really pisses you off when someone says it. Because people have it worse, does it mean your feelings are not real? You guys are talking about getting help, did it ever occur to you than in most times those people feel it's not worth it because things can't go better anyway? And it really doesn't help when your supposedly friends don't even try to understand and put you right away in the 'deranged' or 'selfish' category.

I think you just have no clue. I don't find it pathetic to suicide, but I find it pathetic to judge someone when you have no idea what they went through. Whoever said they are depressed but still don't understand it don't suffer from real depression IMO (like I'm sure most people who call themselves 'depressed' are not).

And if some of you really believe that the guy only suicided because of the size of his penis, I think you're missing the whole point.

wow - I am so suprised at people's lack of empathy...

If people are depressed and crying daily, self harming, miserable we help them and feel for them, but if they feel like killing themselves they get NO sympathy?

I just hope you guys don't ever have to face a loved one who is suicidal..
no no no no no.....that is not what i mean at least...

I feel VERY VERY sorry for a person like this.

There is A LOT of help available...and i think they should seek help, and deserve they very best treatment...their problems should never be belittled by ppl they are seeking friends from. If they are thinking of committing suicide cause umm, they tripped on a sidewalk, than they should be treated with just as much attention as they need....just as some woman whose husband and child were murdered in front of her own eyes should be treated with as much attention that she needs.

It is WHEN they kill themselves (unless of course they are schizo, or have some mental imbalance that would have made seeking help impossible) that I feel no sympathy for them. HUGE HUGE HUGE differences, and i apologize if i hinted at anything else (definately wasnt thinking of that distinction when i posted)

EDIT: WHOA, did NOT realize this thread exploded overnight, lol

If a person is that desperate, that they're willing to kill themselves, then there's a mental health issue at hand. A 'normal' person just does not kill themselves.

Absolutely.

People just do NOT wake up and think - I'm bored, I want attention, today is the day I die.

There is SO much to it. They must TRUELY believe it is the BEST option for them.

They USUALLY feel like they are a burden to their family, and that they feel GUILTY for being there. They think their family will be better off without them.

It can be a totally selfless act.

Perhaps your definition of compassionate is different than mine. Compassion doesn't mean taking every injury and accident, every pain and hurt to heart and weeping over it - compassion means being able to feel empathy for the individual (and their family) without necessarily being deeply personally involved. The best physician I have ever had is deeply compassionate, and yet I know he does not take his every day work home with him. His compassion is clear because of the respect and dignity he gives to all his patients, regardless of their age, gender, or economic status. And honestly, anyone with any ability to read people knows if someone caring for them (or a family member) lacks compassion for them.

Mental illness is the cause for suicide. A few have said people should seek help. Sometimes mental illness prevents whatever treatment is used from working. The following is regarding bipolar disorder or manic depressive.

From: http://www.mydna.com/health/mental/bipolar/topten
Why do many people with bipolar disorder not stay on their medication? One of the symptoms many people with bipolar disorder enjoy is the feeling of being on top of the world and being energized all of the time. The mania or hypomania associated with bipolar disorder is a feeling that many with bipolar disorder not only get used to, but also look forward to. Medications take the extremes of these feelings away, leaving many people feeling "numb" or without emotion. This is a difficult sensation to cope with, leading many people with bipolar disorder to discontinue their medications on their own. This brings back their feelings and gets rid of the numbness, but inevitably the person hits an episode of depression and once again seeks relief.

You think it is pathetic to judge someone....while YOU are???? I have had my brush with suicidal people too......and you know what....everyone of them was an attention *****...plain and simple. Sorry if that's harsh. But it is the truth. I have no sympathy for someone who wont help themself.
