Please please please stay away from piercing guns.
Another forum I am on posted a horrible video from yet another forum, of a mother having her child pierced by a 'professional piercer' with a gun. The piercer actually said "whoops" in the video; not something you want to hear when there are sharp object being inserted into your body.

Guns are notorious for causing infection by cross-contamination because they are not a piece of equipment that is sterilized, and they cause horrible tissue damage because ear piercing studs are not meant for piercing flesh in the way a piercing needle is. They were made for ear-lobes, but are even outdated being used on that part of the body. Too many piercers assume that a two-sided body part requires a gun; do not go to them!!!

This is the video that led me to post this thread:

Further information:

Check to make sure your piercer has a working autoclave before getting pierced. Keep an eye out for general mess, food, and as odd as it sounds, a piercer that spits a lot when they talk isn't a good thing for obvious reasons.

Make sure you ask for a portfolio of their work (they should have on handy at all times in the workplace) and that whatever they use to pierce you with is new. And for goodness sake please be sure to tell them if you are allergic to iodine, latex, and certain types of metals!!!!

Personally, I'm against piercing an infant's ears in general. Thankfully, my mom did not & I decided to have it done when I was old enough to think of it on my on. Even then, I had to have it done 3 times due to allergic reactions & absolutely horrible infections.

Why would anyone want to cause their baby pain just so momma can say, "Look how pretty those cute little earings are!"

I agree with you miakoda. I don't think I could get a babys ears pierced. That is a decision she can make when she is old enough.

I personally am not against piercing but they should not be done with a gun. I have two piercings (in my face) and both were done with a brand new vac-packed needle.

PS. To anyone wanting a monroe (like marilyn monroe) done, it hurts!!!!! I don't suggest doing it lol!

I cannot imagine forcing my baby to be full of holes like me without them being able to agree to it. That in itself sickens me.

I am equally sickened by the fact that so many people ignore what is known about piercing guns, and continue to go to places like Claires to get their ears gunned up.

My sister got a Monroe. It actually looks nice on her.

When my sister was younger, she tried to get me to hole a nail to her belly button while she hammered cause she wanted her belly button pierced and our parents wouldn't let her get it done. I was like NOOOO I'm not stupid! Lol. She ended up getting it done professionally though, thank the lord.

I only have my ears done, one set, and my upper ear. I am ashamed to say both of mine were done with the gun, but I really didnt know better when I got mine done... I want to get my belly botton done, but I am scared of needles so I dont know if Ill ever get it done.

I personaly dont like the idea of getting a babys ears done aswell. I dont like that if the baby really doesnt want it done theres nothing they can do, they have no say in it what so ever. So....

While that video is scary... I'm a member of bmezine.com have been since I was 16 and got interested in body modification.
I've seen many parts of anatomy not made to be pierced with a gun pierced, and left with a nasty butterfly back stud in it to get infected, swell, get worse.. eww..
Told my parents if my little sister ever feels the need to have her ears pierced, she's going to a real studio, because the potential for cross contamination has weirded me out for a good 8 or so years.

This is mostly just a warning on piercing guns. Even for facial and body piercings off the ears, some idiotic piercers use guns instead of hollow needles.

Just be careful, whatever you choose to do.

I have six in my ears, all done with guns, just because I didn't know any better. I guess I was just lucky. I did go to Claire's to get my cartilage done though, and the women there said she wasn't sure how the gun worked. I was at least smart enough to just walk out after that...

Good idea. Most of those people have no idea what a post does to your ears.

I completely agree.
Piercing guns squeeze the lobe damaging tissue and making more of a wound. When a needle is used the only wound is the hole and not all the tissue that is around it. In the end, it takes longer for a piercing done with a gun to heal not to mention it's less painful. In the case of a child this really matters imo.

Agreed.
I only get pierced with needles, but I remember getting pierced with a gun when I was very little (I screamed for pierced ears until I got my way) and I remember the gun getting stuck, and my ear getting yanked, and the general pain of healing overall.
A needle is quick and painless, and, for me, it's actually an enjoyable experience. I don't sweat thinking the needle with get stuck or the piercers hands will not push hard enough (or my hands depending on if I choose to do the piercing myself or not); I just sit back and let it happen. :D

A question ....... I only have my ear lobes done , but one has grown shut . I don't want to pay to have it done ....If I deaden with ice , do you think I could use a sterilized needle and re-open myself ? Then do I just put in a sterilized stud ??
