I should know better than to look at Petfinder...it makes me so sad to see all the designer doodles..."everyone wants one, they won't end up in a shelter" my @ss.

There are lots of loving puggies that need rescuing! Pugs and kids are made for each other. Pugs are sturdy creatures too, but should always be supervised around large dogs. Sometimes the big guys just don't know the little guys are there and injuries can happen...

Maybe a sturdy terrier? Some can be great with kids if properly trained. Something like a westie, cairn...a little bit chunkier than some terriers, more sturdy.

Honestly, I hate to be the naysayer, but I would be wary of getting a 6lb dog to play with a 160lb dog. Even if Binn is super gentle, he is HUGE and the little guys are TINY. It just isn't a good combination unless you want to keep them separated when you can't supervise their play.

Pugs are, I'm sure, some of the toughest "little dogs" you can get. Dakota plays with a Pug here and the two of them have an absolute blast. Dakota tackles Otis and rolls him around on the ground and Otis just wags his curly little tail and snorts. If Dakota did that to some of the other small dogs out there, or to Ripley, the little guys would be squished.

Downside to a Pug is that you need a pretty heavy-duty purse and a strong shoulder to tote them around ;) Otis is solid muscle and he weighs over 20lbs.

A pug should weight between 14-18lbs! Not over 20:yikes: Most reputable breeders will breed them within standard.

You are right though, they are very sturdy, happy dogs.

I think anything more than 10lbs is over the limit for purses :) You've got some conflicting requirements there!

As far as I know, Otis is from a responsible breeder. He's pet quality though, definitely over the standard.

This is a little OT, but Showpug, why do I see so many HUGE pugs in the ring? I was at a show recently and the pugs that I saw there were HUGE. No way did they weigh between 14-18lbs. Maybe some of the females did, but the males definitely didn't. Is there a standard for weight or just for height?

I say Cavalier King Charles Spaniel or Pug, definitely!

Pug - VERY sturdy and excellent with children. Very outgoing and non-aggressive. Of course, I don't know if it was due to a bad breeder, but the two I've met have both sounded like a motor engine of a car thats about to die (it was inside the house with lots of water available). Extremely sweet though!

CKCS - Extremelty affectionate and people-oriented!! Non-aggressive. It has enough energy to keep up with an IW since it's a true spaniel, but small and too adorable for words...hehe

You'll be the talk of the town with a pug in your purse!

Yes...indeed the talk of the town... ;)

Can't find a pic of dressed up cavalier. :( Poo!

You definately want to go with a small breed that is well built and sturdy and that can take a big paw in the face from an Irish wolfie:D Personally I wouldn't go with a toy poodle I owned one along time ago with GSD's and she was dainty and not rough and tough ;) I would go with a terrier or even a small mixed breed with some of the breeds that were suggested. I think a Cairn terrier is perfect :)

I reccomend a Silky Terrier 100%! :) I had one for 6yrs, and she was the love of my life. They are super sturdy little dogs, and Princess was 10lbs. She wrestled with our GSD (over 100lb) all the time (pretty roughly) and they both had a ball. Never had any problems. She was super easy to train, and loved to dress-up! She was real tolerent of kids too. The little girls at our church would put bows, and dresses on her and she'd sit there for it. The only time that dog growled was once, at another dog(a hyper pug who kept biting her neck and bugging her :D), but she never bit anyone. Person, or animal. She was the best dog I'd ever had, and I loved her so much. She never had any health problems until she was 6, and she had an anurism and passed away...:( We were so devestated...Anyway, let me see if I can find you some pictures of Princess. ;)

I would stick with something that's at least 15 pounds or more. Not quite tiny small, but you don't want your dog to accidently go squish either.

(still haircut)

The ones of her w/ a haircut were when she was younger. i don't know why, but when she got 4-5, she started losing the hair on her nose, and it just stayed that way...??? but she was a sweetie...she was by no means show quality (my grandma got her at a petstore. and when she got sick, she was bedridden, and couldn't care for her, so we took her in (she was probably 3-5mo). She was ADORABLE, but all her black/gold hair turned silver, and gold when she turned a year old or so. I'm sure you could do a search for silky terrier on google images, to see what to better expect. they're cute!! :) good luck! i never had a small breed until we got princess, but since then we've had nothing but small breeds (besides our gsd). :) get ready to get stuck on 'em!!! :p

When I was little I had a Sheltie for about 2 wks until my mom re-homed it.

His name was Joe-bu-delux.. lol

That dog would tear around the yard in circles.. mom went nuts because he was hyper and gave him away :(

I think Shelties are pretty.

DixiesMom..

I love your dog!! Very girly indeed :D

I can see myself with one of those :p
