Im toying with the idea of getting a small breed dog.

I've never owned a small breed so, I dont know much about them, but I know what Im looking for.

Im looking for a breed that is good with small kids, smart, tough when playing with Binn, but isnt too small that Binn would crush it, a breed that isnt high-strung, but small enough that I can dress up and carry around in those fancy dog purses... lol :p

Any suggestions?

Min.Poodle,Cavalier King charles spanial, Pug, Bichon, Border Terrier. These are "heartier" small dogs. Good bone, nice temperaments, easily socialized with other dogs, good family dogs. Not as likely to be injured by children (or that giant wolfhound in the pic! ) than a Toy breed might be. Still small enough to dress up. lol These would be my first picks. Good luck in your search!

I did a quick search and came up with a few ideas -- I don't personally know any dogs of these breeds, but it might give you some ideas.

Havanese are supposed to be good with children, and would fit the bill for you to dress up and primp and carry around, especially if you managed to find one on the smaller end of their range, which is supposed to be 7-12lbs (bigger is better with the child in the picture, smaller is more ideal for the purse and your back!)

I've never seen one, but a Toy American Eskimo Dog, if you can find one, would probably be pretty awesome. (7-10lbs) I hear they're good with children. I met a medium-sized (Miniature) American Eskimo Dog and he was the sweetest little guy :)

Boston Terriers are supposed to be okay with some children. They vary in size a lot so you could find a smaller one to dress up and carry around.

Also look into Bichon Frise, possibly the English Toy Spaniel, they would be lovely I bet but probably not so much into the dressing up and hanging out in a purse :)

I love small dogs! They're so cuddly and loving and so fun to take around :D

The lady I get my dog food from breeds Bulldogs. These are the sweetest most handsome bulldogs ever! What great personalities. They would be great if your not looking for a watch dog. Her females go for 2500 and males 2000.

Just a thought. I also love love love cockerspaniels here is my baby Sophie the sofa dog.

I also

I second border terriers--what about a small pug or perhaps a brussels griffon (my next choice) or perhaps a mixed breed of some of these dogs that have been mentioned in others posts.

Eskies are great dogs, but the toys ones are prone to most of the dwarfism health issues i.e. eyes, teeth fitting in mouths, etc. The minis are ok but I love the standards. They (at least the ones my grandma had) are great with kids until they start to get old, then they get snappy pretty fast. But they're sturdy and happy little fellows!

Mini/toy Poodles might work, but as you can tell from PoodleMommy's thread, they are kind of fragile.

Pugs and the terriers are probably the sturdiest small guys, but I don't know if I would want to pair up a terrier with an IW's prey drive.

Cavs could a good choice, just make sure you heavily research the health issues plauging the breed (that goes for any of the breeds, but you well know that already)

Bichons aren't too breakable, but very yappy (most anyway at least until they hit about 4). Lots of grooming required to keep them looking decent, though it's not too hard to maintain once the initial work has been done.

How about a Cairn Terrier to match your Wolfies?
My husband wants one of those :)

It looks like a smallish Binn :D

They're cute dogs, and I heard they are tough as nails, so maybe!

Pugs are so cute, and we found a Brussels Griffon with a small adoption fee in the paper, but when we called about the pup, the adoption fee wasnt so small :(

Ohh! Get the toy poodle, because they've got a long history as circus trick dogs, so you can make a saddle thingy for Binn and then teach the poodle how to ride on his back! That would so freaking cool!

:D DO IT! Lol, but only if you truly think it's a good fit for you and your family. But I highly recommend rescue!

Do you think your kids are old enough to not accidently hurt the small dog?
