    Gastro Dog, Which Diet?

That is quite dangerous advice considering you don't know what is meant by "gastric problems". There are many different reasons a dog might be on a "gastro diet", not necessarily because he is allergic to something in kibble. The dog might have gastroesophageal reflux, or a protein/carb/fat...

Okay PEOPLE! Show me those recipes!!!!!

www.balanceit.com The recipes cost something, but if don't purchase the supplement sold with it the cost is pretty low. It will give you recipes both with using their supplement and with using human supplements (multivitamins, etc) to balance the diet.

What do think of this diet on Oprah today?

True, but apoptosis is oh so beautifully regulated too :) We just finished GI physiology and I learned soooo much more in there about how bodies deal with nutrients than I did in nutrition (go figure). I loved it! One of the best classes of the year so far.

Studies of Grain Free Food Better Than Not Grain Free?

I think the research is done, and the rep sounded pretty positive about it- I think it just needs to be published...

What do think of this diet on Oprah today?

Why on earth would cells contain enzymes capable of causing "self-digestion"? That is a recipe for disaster. The enzymes responsible for digesting proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates are formed in the pancreas in a pre-enzyme form (called zymogens), that are released into the small intestine in...

What do think of this diet on Oprah today?

This is simply not true- dogs do produce amylase in their saliva, but cats do not. Dogs can produce salivary amylase in varying amounts, and will produce more when regularly fed a high-starch diet.

What do think of this diet on Oprah today?

From Small Animal Clinical Nutrition, 4th Ed., pp. 216-219: DOGS AS OMNIVORES The word carnivore can be used to indicate either a taxonomic classification or a type of feeding behavior. The order Carnivora is quite diverse and consists of 12 families containing more than 260 species...

Studies of Grain Free Food Better Than Not Grain Free?

Natura is currently doing side-by-side studies of conventional vs. grain-free kibbles at UC Davis and U of IL vet schools. They said at least one paper will be coming out soon... I'm sure it will be on their website when it is.

Foods NOT affected by recall at Menu Foods

Hey, the pet food companies are the ones that determine which ingredients go in the cans in the first place. Note that Natura uses only U.S. ingredients. I don't feed Canidae because my dog wouldn't touch it.

Pet Food Deaths Were Caused By Rat Poison

The current thought is that the "chunks and gravy" style foods are the ones affected because a) it is a difficult style of food to make, so companies like Iams contract with Menu, who has the appropriate machinery (this is why so many different companies were affected), and b) wheat gluten is...

    Another new food I found . . .

FWIW, I tried starting my dog on their frozen raw chicken diet. The rep told me to start with just one medallion in addition to her normal kibble. After the second day of one medallion, Winnie got amazingly sick- she literally had it coming from both ends at once. It was bad enough that I...

What do you think of the Dog food recall???

And frankly, this is going to cost the pet food companies millions... obviously they are not doing this for profit. Their quality control is very strict primarily to avoid something like this. They will have a hard time recovering financially, and I'm sure they have lost the trust of many pet...

What do you think of the Dog food recall???

No cases have been connected to Science Diet yet- they did a voluntary recall of the handful of canned diets co-manufactured by Menu. Seems like the main problems are with Special Kitty (Wal-Mart store brand) and Iams pouches. Cats are definitely suffering worse than dogs. Epidemiologists have...

What do you think of the Dog food recall???

Apparently the foods that are affected are mainly "chunks and gravy"-type foods, which are difficult to produce. Companies like Iams, etc contract the manufacturing of these products out to Menu. Wheat gluten is an ingredient in the "gravy", and the timing of deaths coincides with a change in...

"That stuff is bad for your dog ya know" says the vet

i shouldn't say she "admitted" she doesn't approve of raw- she flat-out told us, and made it quite clear that raw can be very unsafe, particularly in immunosupressed dogs.

"That stuff is bad for your dog ya know" says the vet

julie- responding because I really appreciate your question. Thanks!! The course I've taken (priniciples of nutrition) was an introductory course, and it covered small and large animal nutrition, so it was pretty basic. We covered how to formulate a ration for large animals and how to analyze...

"That stuff is bad for your dog ya know" says the vet

THIS IS NOT TRUE. I will try to repeat this every time I see it. YES, in the past vets received little nutritional training. As a new student, I will have two required semesters of nutrition, plus I can opt to take an elective course. NO, Hills does NOT teach our course. We are taught by a...

Anyone know a bit about vitamins?

From what I understand, when the vitamin states that it provides "100% of the daily recommended value" of something, it has to provide enough of the substance that you can absorb 100% of the DRV. Because the gut will never absorb 100% of everything that passes through it, the actual pills...
