Just watched the news and there is a recall on over 46 types of dog and cat foods. We feed Sasha Iam's dog food and I have checked the label, nothing realated to the recall as yet. I am changing her diet today.

I am said for he pets and their owners who trusted a company to supply them with safe quality food. :(

Also makes me wonder if it will ever happen to me and my loved ones even though I feed food that is supposed to be "high quality".

I don't think any of the foods were that great of ones anyway but you have to remember this even happens with human food. I'm jsut shocked at the number of foods it affected:yikes:

So while it sucks they didn't catch it they did pull it. lately with all the peanut butter and spinach, and whatever other food problems I've been being carefull picking not only the dog food but also my food for once:p

Well, Charley has been exceedingly smug about the fact that our dogs aren't fed any of those foods - like I didn't have to fight him tooth and claw to keep him from continuing to insist on feeding Purina like he did years ago

makes me glad i chose to go with eagle pack! and yes, it could happen to anyone, but i think it's less likely with super premiums that have higher standards.

My boyfriends friend at work, her chi is really sick. Its probably from that, vomiting and all. :\ I think its a little ridiculous that they cant keep the dog food safe. Why does one company make all that dog food anyway?

Glad we're eating Canidae =]

so very sad for all the animals affected that have died or are sick.

There are ALOT of foods, and I think alot of people with the higher quality end foods had no idea those companies don't even manufacture their own food..

I personally don't consider any of the brands on recall high quality food. But then again, I can't imagine not knowing where my dog's food is manufactured...
I feel so extremely bad for all of the pets and owners affected by this. It saddens me to think how people trusted these brands (I wish they didn't have to learn the hard way)!

Ditto, Joce.

I try to feed my dogs the best that I can provide them. Only recently have I been paying as close attention to my own food as well :p

Apparently the foods that are affected are mainly "chunks and gravy"-type foods, which are difficult to produce. Companies like Iams, etc contract the manufacturing of these products out to Menu. Wheat gluten is an ingredient in the "gravy", and the timing of deaths coincides with a change in wheat gluten suppliers.

Many reports have stated that there have been 10 deaths, but that is 10 deaths out of 50 animals involved in a feeding trial... a 20% mortality rate. Very scary. The deaths look much like antifreeze or lily toxicosis, with animals dying of acute renal failure.

I had a small chuckle, just because I used to deliver pizza to the one Menu plant here in the midwest, so I know exactly where all this is coming from.

Aside from that, I'm really glad that I don't feed any of those foods, feel bad for those who don't and it's kind of a PIA having to check all the canned/pouched foods that clients brought in prior to the recall. We actually had two dogs eating the recalled stuff...they seem to be ok though.

As far as human food goes though, the FDA has admitted to severly cutting back on inspections. I am so going the "organic home garden" route as soon as I can.

I'm relieved that I was more discerning about the type of food I feed my pets. These big companies (P&G comes to mind) see pet food as a side job and they outsource it to other companies like Menu Foods, slap their labels on it and then market that sh!t as if it were ice cream. Every time I see one of those bogus commercials on TV I want to puke because I know that most of America are sheep when it comes to TV propaganda. My friend nearly lost her seven year old cat this week. Sudden renal failure. She feeds him IAMs. The cans weren't from the identified lots, but somehow the fact that they focused on specific lots doesn't make me feel warm and fuzzy. Not that I would feed my pets that crap even if it weren't tainted.

I predict we will be hearing more about Beneful in the near future too.

...proving once again that when you leave corporations to the "honor system" they will slack off for the Holy Graile, known as Profit.

Things like that cost so much, emotionally, mentally and financially.
The food industry will sicken you for profit and the health insurers will make sure you can't afford to get well--for Profit.
