I agree with everything Kady has said. If people think I came off as a jerk, combative, etc. in my post... well that's dandy. I'm not a "sugar coating" type of person... you'll get exactly what I think ;)

I agree that people who use dog parks are lazy. 90% of people using them come straight home from work, grab Fluffy who hasn't done ANYTHING but sit at home for 9 hours, and let them loose at a park around a bunch of strange dogs. Then act surprised when something bad happens?! Yes, I agree that taking your dog ANYWHERE is a risk - but you lose control over that risk factor when you unleash your dog at a dog park. Taking your dog for a walk, or letting them run off lead somewhere secluded just does not carry the same risk. To me, it just does NOT make sense! If you live in a city, you probably have sidewalks... is it too much effort to WALK your dog on a leash for a few blocks? For those who say being at a dog park is their dog's ONLY chance to run around off lead - there ARE other options. Overall though, dog parks ARE the lazy answer and are more of risk to your dog than most any other activity you could do with them.

And there's my exact thinking on why people who use dog parks are lazy. Teal summed it up nicely. When I say "lazy", I mean, too lazy to find safer ways to exercise your dogs. People go "Wahhh.. I live in the city, I have no yard, I can't...." THAT is lazy. Excuses are lazy.

I live in a condo with a backyard the size of a postage stamp. I have 3 dogs. I *gasp* don't even walk my dogs around my neighborhood (due to my neighbors thinking they can let their fluff balls run loose).
Yet they are still well exercised and do not go to dog parks. I find better, safer ways to exercise my dogs. Treadmill time, OB work (mental exercise can drain them faster than physical exercise at times), going to the 100 acre park and letting them play by themselves (no one is ever there), play dates with my friends dogs, etc.
For people with no access to open fields, go to a tennis court. Soccer fields, baseball fields. Invest in a 50' long line if you don't trust your dogs off lead. It's pretty simple.

But hey, y'all have made it apparent that you'll keep going to dog parks. Fine. I just wonder if another thread is started a couple months from now titled "Luna's second fight" will have the same reaction.

My old dog ... walks were not enough. I was home all day with him and we would go for a walk and then we would go out into the yard and play with the hose (in the summer) and the pool and he would run HARD after the hose for an hour before I needed a break lol we would go out and do that a couple times a day just to keep ME sane and then he would still need more. Walks were unbearable... he didn't want to walk. he wanted to RUN and stretch his legs and he was FAST too.

This dog just needed such an excessive amount of exercise. We took him to the dog park from time to time too. It wasn't laziness... it was just being stumped on what else to do with him to get that pent up energy out or he would destroy everything in the house.

he was a lot of dog and admittedly he was more dog than I could probably handle. I loved him and I miss him very much but I am glad that I have two couch potato dogs now who are satisfied with a romp in the back yard... heck half the time Belle doesn't even romp lol she'll go out and lay in the yard and then come in and sleep on the couch. We have taken them to the dog park here. Belle likes other dogs but she would spend her time at the park sniffing every inch of the place. that's her favorite past time... smelling. Then she'd drink a gallon of water and throw it up in the car on the way home lol... she's a car puker. Beezer he'd just do whatever. he didn't care either way. But Teddy would get in there and just run and run and run and run and run for two hours if we let him even after playing all out with the water earlier. he needed an extreme amount of exercise. I've never seen anything like it lol.

ironically enough... he died while on a leashed walk. the clip broke and before we knew what happened he ran into the road and was struck :(

.
here you are not allowed to unleash your dogs in a public park... idiots still do but if they aren't on your property or in a designated dog park... they MUST be on leash.

we tried a basketball court and he tore his feet open all the time. ruined a few pairs of booties that I tried to protect his feet.

Soccer fields and baseball fields... again public and NO OFF LEASH DOGS. but there are always people who think the rules don't apply to them.

As for the long line... I had one of those. I suffered quite an injury due to that long line. it happened the DAY before I had to move too lol it took me months to heal from that. my groin will never be the same :rofl1: I couldn't just let the line go and let it trail behind him because I couldn't catch him. way too fast and trying to catch the cord is what caused my injury. and keeping hold of the tie out was dangerous for him. he almost suffered a few neck injuries after tryign to run and hitting the end of the line with a jolt.

I'm not making excuses. I don't need to make excuses for why dog parks are a good idea for some dogs. they aren't all little cramped quarters where dogs are forced to interact. Dog parks are GREAT for the right dogs :) They just are.

This thread is hilarious.
About as entertaining as watching a bunch of unsocialized dogs sort out their differences.

Anyone have a break stick?

Not that I'm complaining!
LOL totally.

just look at the post count. this thread has been here for three days and we are only at 9 pages?

that barely counts as a kerfuffle :rofl1: (I just wanted an excuse to use the word kerfuffle lol)

For someone that claims they never use dog parks; you seem to think you know everything about them and the people who use it. Yes some people are lazy, that is true but to automatically call "everyone" lazy is a bit bitchy.
I occasionally use the dog park (more so when the dogs are young and need socialization, not so much as adults) So are you going to come up to me and call me lazy? because I'll tell you where to put it.
Just because a person uses a dog park does not automatically mean that is the ONLY source of excercise used. I used to go to the dog park often before. But we also go to the beach almost every week-end when it's warm, we go to all the local pet stores, we go for a walk in town and they get to run around at home.

Another thing, people work and we don't all have a lot of extra hours to take the dog out for a 6 hour walk to tire them out, let's be realistic here. So if the dog gets plenty of attention at home and goes to a dog park to stretch it's legs so be it. Why are you being so difficult about it? You can do what you want with your dogs, i'm sure some of us really don't give a ****. So if Nicole and Luna want to go to thier local dog park what's your beef with it? It's not like she's going to your house and stealing your dogs to take them to the park.

Do you know how dangerous a dog running full tilt on a 50' line is?? A dog running full tilt on a long line is just as dangerous as a fight happening at a dog park. The dog can get seriously hurt as well as yourself.

this

I have personal... painful... experience with that lol. Hooked my ankle and pulled me down into a split. OMG I thought I was going to rip in half lol hubby saw it happen and was sure he was going to have to rush me to emergency :rofl1:

it's funny now cause it doesn't hurt anymore lol but it wasn't even close to being funny at the time. it could have been so much worse lol but it took months for the muscle to heal

Interesting to see Chazzhound's "Pack Dynamics" when there is a new "dog" thrown into the mix.

Hey, I never said I wasn't a bitch ;) You can tell me where to put it all you want. I'm opinionated. Never said I wasn't.

You take young dogs to dog parks to socialize them? That's lovely. Great way to create a fearful dog. I've seen (just because I don't take MY dogs to dog parks doesn't mean I've never watched what goes on at them) and heard of numerous young dogs that are now DA because their owners took them to a dog park to "socialize" and the dog got attacked. Young dogs should be socialized in a *controlled* setting, not with strange dogs off leash. Take a puppy or basic group OB class; nice, controlled setting with other dogs, plenty of socialization. I'll never understand the mindset that a dog HAS to play with other strange dogs in order to be "socialized".

Personally, I don't let my dogs run full tilt on a long line, I have more control over them than that. I suggested others use a long line to play fetch, etc. to exercise their dogs in an open area. But, I don't use a long line on mine anymore, they have solid recalls and don't need it. If I'm somewhere where for some reason I think they'll stray, they wear e-collars.

You're right. we all suck as dog owners. you are so superior to us :) You're my hero can I have your autograph?

LOL yes I"m being sarcastic. No I'm not a perfect dog owner. never claimed to be. I'm not a dog trainer I'm just a very average owner and luckily I've NEVER had a problem at a dog park... EVER :) it has been a good choice for MY dogs and if I'm a lesser dog owner for it than so be it. I'm ok with that.
