I went to the farm (where I work) early this morning to take care of the garden before the heat of the day sets in. Since it was before "public hours" I decided it would be a good time to take Miss Zoe (more things I can control when the public and their dogs - who might not be vaccinated, etc... - isn't there). I also grabbed my camera so I could share her little adventure. There were a few "hide behind mom" moments like when the turkey puffed up and started gobbling for his lady but other than that she had a blast!

After much sniffing and pauses to listen as we made our way in to the farmyard here you can see Zoe's first glimpse of the dairy calves. Very curious with a bit of caution added in.

The calves were equally curious and all came up to inspect Zoe.

"What do we get to see next, Mom?"

A little unsure of the goats...

Just after this she decided she wanted to go play with the goats but I was mean and said she needed to stay on the outside of the fences.

"Hey, I don't see any other animals"

"Oh, now I do!"

And our brand new calf...

One of those run and hide moments when Monica came to visit. Zoe ended up saying hello a moment later.

Meeting our Angus bull, Dennis.

Zoe is SO cute! I love the way she's a bit wary of things, but too curious to hold back for long, and winds up, "Hey, I like them!" What a great time she had! Did you have to carry her into the house? Because in that last picture, she look totally gone!

She is too cute! Are your farm animals bottle fed? They seem really friendly.

I love Zoe, didn't you get her from a rescue?

The majority of the dairy calves are bottle fed as well as the two brown and white kids. But everyone else was born and raised on the farm. We are a public park so they are very familiar with people (though it isn't a petting zoo and the public does not get to feed the animals - we are a historical museum educating the public about farming in our area from 1920 - 1950).

Zoe is a rescue. A friend of mine has a neighbor who raises puppies just to have them but doesn't take care of them. She rescued two from him last year (covered in ticks, lethargic, extremely wormy) then rescued two groups of puppies this year - all much worse than the past year. Zoe is from the first group this year. The second group is in quarantine with mange and a list of other problems - one was rushed to the emergency vet not long ago today and I don't know how that pup is doing. :(

My friend doesn't pay the guy for them and he hardly ever lets go of the girls because he needs so many for one to survive and replace adults lost - and to have more puppies. She tried working with local authorities but this is backwoods, no city limits and he is buds with the sheriff. She is trying a macro approach now. She offered to treat the rest of his dogs - there are a few more pups he would not give up - and now he is refusing everything so she may not be able to rescue the rest.

At least Zoe is getting a wonderful life :)
No kidding! The guy didn't know Zoe was a girl when he let her go (and neither did my friend). She had gone back after rescuing the first group of pups this year telling the guy what the vet said was wrong (extremely wormy, staph infections) and that is when she saw Zoe - very lethargic in the driveway. She told the guy that Zoe looked worse than the other pups she had already taken and pretty much begged to take her. Thank goodness it worked. Zoe is doing as much good for me as I am for her. :)

It looks like you might have your new farm partner :) Not scared of bulls, cows, goats, or sheep at only a couple months old? You've got your work cut out for you, LOL!
