BUT ... that bought the 25 cents worth of gas when I topped off our one car when I borrowed it and took me to the movies .... pop corn and drink ! So there !

Job: Pet guardian(kennel worker)/dog trainer
Pay: Decent-ish plus commission for training (if i didn't have bills/loans, I'd be fine)
Perks: I'm working with dogs, when I clock out at night I'm done until the next shift, no work following me home, the experience I can from handling that many dogs each day.
Hate: After two years, scooping poop and cleaning gets really, REALLY monotonous. Especially when I remember I have a college degree.

Job: I'm the manager for a small hunter/jumper (horse) barn.

Pay: Better than most people in my position - I have a wonderful boss.

Perks: Outside all day (a perk in nice weather), my dog comes with me, I have days where I don't have to deal with any people, my hours are flexible, I have health insurance (a big rarity in my job) and I have nobody looking over my shoulder all day.

Hate: Outside all day (when the weather is crappy), dealing with the occasionally very high-maintenance owner, getting abused by naughty horses occasionally, being dirty most of the time, constantly having "woman dribbly stuff" issues from the hormones I have to feed to some of the horses (ooops, did that just cross into TMI?).

After two years, scooping poop and cleaning gets really, REALLY monotonous. Especially when I remember I have a college degree.
:lol-sign: I have those days too. I start wondering why I bothered with organic chemistry....

My job: Optometric Tech/Office Manager for an Optometry practice

Pay: $40k/yr plus full medical/dental benefits

Loves: I love my boss...he is awesome and treats me like a princess :) I love dealing with friendly people (which is only part of the time), I love the hours because I get to sleep or get stuff done in the morning and I don't get off too late to do stuff after work. It's low stress so I can leave work at work and never bring it home with me. I can be on the internet alot and chat on Chaz :)

Hate: Rude people that come in acting like I "owe" them something? People that ask really stupid questions like "How do I make an appointment?" (Duh, have you not ever made an appointment for anyhting in your life?) It's an office job so I don't get much exersice and have to go to the gym 5 days a week to stay fit. It's inside...I've always had outdoor jobs dealing with animals.

Why is it so rude to ask?

What is there to be ashamed of?

I never did understand why people cared so much about sharing how much money they do or do not earn.........

I am a student, and a poor one at that!! I don't receive any loans, and my bursary I receive goes towards my fees.

Not to mention I already owe £13000 odd from my last degree ;)

Money schmoney. You can't take it with you. Work to live, don't live to work!!

But I am doing social work. The starting salary is about £20000, which is a GOOD starting wage. Here anyway.
I don't understand why people were getting so offended either. I just took it as the person was curious about jobs and how much it pays. I'd like to know how much jobs pay as well.

Alright I honestly don't know why people are getting so upset. It was a simple question so I can get to know about other jobs and how people like them. If you don't feel comfortable saying something then don't say it. I'm not forcing you to say anything or even post at all, so in fact it is 100% voluntary. You don't really have to draw attention to yourself by getting offended. I am truly sorry if it seemed like I made anybody uncomfortable or put them on the spot. I am just asking a simple question. I don't even have to know your salary. Of all the information I requested, the salary may be the least important. There's no better way to learn about something than to ask.

As for me I am a senior in HS so I used to just work in a grocery store last year for $8/h but I quit. It was all I could really find at the time. Over the summer I had nothing to do and I seemed to wait a little too long to start looking for a job so it was nearly impossible to find anything, so all summer I helped out my friend and his dad build a big seperate "garage"/room in their backyard, and worked with a couple of classmates from my construction class to build a house and donate it to some family in need foundation.

I was unpaid as it was part of owning horses , but what I truly hated was holding our 2 horses plus the 3 others under our wings ( students ) mid winter for monthly horse shoeing !!!! 5 hours of misery !!! Yes there were cross ties ... but if held they did better and it didn't take as long .

Veterinary 'tech'. Not certified, just trained on the job.
I get $7.00 an hour. I'm fairly certain I could make more if I asked for it but the experience is the real value to me ATM.

Perks: Dynamic environment, the people I work with, seeing all the different dogs and their personalities, etc and so forth. Too many to list, really.

Cons: Cats. They're moody and leave scratch marks. Never been attacked by a dog. Have been scratched and clawed only by cats. Other than that just scooping poop on the weekends when I have to work kennels since the rest of the clinic is closed.

Job: Computer administrator for wintel platforms

Salary: pretty good. Some people make more, some less than me. Most people I work with are in the 60-80k/year range with 10+ years experience

Pros: I work at home. I love troubleshooting problems. The people who's servers I manage treat me great, better than my own management.

Cons: 24x7 on call once a month for everything my group manages, and pretty much 24x7 on call for my own servers.
Dealing with offshore resources who just don't have the skills to do the job, yet they keep sending more of our jobs offshore.
Having to drive to the data center at 3am to rebuild a box for the next 18 hours because some offshore guy broke it by applying some patch that we told him not to apply, but he did it anyway.

Where I work: At a family buffet restaraunt either been in charge of keeping the salad and dessert bars stocked, making salads and desserts, or being in charge of the carving station/pizza station which means carving a huge chunk of beef along with either turkey, bone in ham, stuffed pork, peameal bacon, sausage stuffed peameal bacon, or regular pork and at the same time also making pizzas in front of everyone at the buffet AKA if I mess something up or drop one on the floor everyone sees!

Perks: My boss and supervisors are AWESOME!!! My supe lets me book off anytime I want and as much as I want because I put in so many hours for him and he knows he can always rely on me to come in if someone calls in sick. Most of my co-workers are pretty cool too and we often get together like a few weeks ago a few of us went to Canada's Wonderland together and next Monday my boss is paying for all of us to go paintballing together. Another plus is working with the public, some of the guys we get in are quite the hotties! And I love the customers who always make the lil extra effort to compliment or make a joke.

Cons: Working with the public. For every one good customer I get there's always about 10 rude ones who think they are the only one on earth that matters. For example, I'm supposed to carve the beef really thin which I do a great job of (according to my boss *shrug*) but some customers insist on wanting a big thick slab of meat. I know more often than not their eyes are bigger than their stomachs and at $80/hunk of meat I cant exactly just cut thick slabs for everyone so I try explaining that cutting thin is the way I was trained and the way Im expected to carve the meat (or some BS to get them to lay off) but some customers just get all pissy saying they are the ones paying so they should get to choose how their meat is carved and blah blah blah. The other con is when Im doing carving/pizza I gotta stand in pretty much the same spot for most of the shift (6-12 hours)

Current Job: Daycare and Boarding Coordinator

Pay: not even enough to pay my bills . . .it's a problem

Perks: I like what I do and the people I work with. I enjoy doing paperwork (yeah I'm crazy) and being able to bring my dogs to work with me.

Hate: I hate that I am currently doing the work of two people, soon to be three, because the Manager left us two months ago and a new one was not hired, and the assistant Manager's last day is on Friday and instead of hiring a new one I get even more work thrown on my plate . . . for not nearly enough money. I am told that I can only work 40 hours a week, I will only be paid for 40 hours a week, but I can't get all of my work done in those 40 hours so I'm usually there longer.

I don't wanna go to work today . . .

Job: Technology Specialist (Jack of all trades, master of ONE, computer geek)

Salary: Enough, plus a little extra.

Perks: Relative daily freedom. I am on my own and just bounce about going from client to client.

Downside: LOTS of hours and the usual dealing with totally unreasonable clients who don't know squat about technology, are paying me to help them, but eschew my advice only to end up wasting money and then blaming me. Grrrr... LOL

Yeah, that too. Luckily most of our boarders are responsible for keeping their own farriers happy (I'll hold them if they ask, but they usually deal with it). I'm just responsible for my horse and my boss's two, and we use the same farrier, who hates the cold and tends to reschedule if it is too bad.

Job: Groomer and owner of salon

Salary: Good, even better once I get the amount of clients I want.

Pros: I love grooming, never do I feel like not working. Also my salon is behind my home so I'm close to my son and can bring the dog to work with me. I can set my appointments around my schedule for most parts so I don't miss any of the school events. Also love that I can clean/groom my own dogs when ever I want too though after grooming most of the day I don't really feel like grooming my own, so I guess that should go in the cons. lol

Cons: I hate the paper work that goes with it........ugh.

Job: Computer Programmer for small IT consulting firm

Pay: somewhere in the $55-65k/yr

Pros: I make my own hours, everyone is very friendly and helpful. All the free drinks you could want. I don't usually work directly with customers, but when I do it's not bad. I just love what I do, it's fun and rewarding and satisfying. I get to try out all kinds of new technologies.

Cons: sometimes customers want the impossible. But they're pretty easy to talk out of stuff so it's not really that bad.
