This is exactly how I feel about the situation. A few bucks is nothing compared to 70 or even 20. I've worked as a cashier before. I would get hell for missing 20 bucks out of the register, but a few bucks? Not so much.
yeah thats how it is at my store too, anything under 5.00 they dont really look at that much, but if it starts being over 10.00 then well **** goes to hell lol

When I was in high school I worked at Publix (a grocery store) as a cashier. If you were missing more than $20 you ended up getting a "write up." If you had 3 write ups within a certain amount of time, you were "demoted" to being a bagger because they didn't want you handling the cash.

I was referring to the previous posts where people stated if their children were aware of the $ mistake, they would return to the store to correct it. It was not referring to anyone messing up.

Regarding the bold text. This would apply also to the example of a cashier knowingly undercharging you and you being aware. There have been instances where an employer suspected as much and had video to back up his suspicions. Both the cashier and the friend were charged.

Ignorance of the law is not a defense.
If you KNEW you were being charged at the time and did not say anything, due to you wanting to profit off of it, then that is a whole different ball game. Back to the ill intention thing that I had mentioned. Being undercharged and having no idea until its too late, well you absolutely did NOT have ill intentions there. And I still think its petty to be accused of stealing because the cashier forgot to scan your candy bar which you did not find out about until later. Sorry, but too bad for them. THEY made that mistake, now they get to deal with it.

Let me put it this way. Being a cashier before. I NEVER expected someone to return money or come back in because I made a stupid mistake when the amount was small. All I do is hit myself upside the head and deal with the consequences. I'll pay attention better next time...

My concern is with items in my possession which I don't have proof of purchase. Every shoplifter claims it was a mistake or accident - how many are believed?

An extreme example happened in town at a Canadian Tire Store. The newspaper had pic of RCMP with dog tracking a shoplifter plus, they had a helicopter out as well. RCMP spokesman stated even though it was shoplifting, it was still a theft. Oh, and by the way, they didn't find the guy - didn't get their man. Canadian Tire is notorious for charging shoplifters.

Of course that is theft..... The person took something with full intention of not paying for it.... I asked a customer at work who is an Police Officer about this today, out of interest and he said he would never charge a person in the incident described above because it is NOT theft...... It is as I said earlier an error.. happens all the time in many different ways....

Yeah, you wouldn't be charged because theft as a crime requires intent as an element of the crime

Common sense . I always keep my purse in the kiddy seat and pile items in there too . One time it was open and I didn't realize until I got to the car thst two small cans were in my purse . I went back and paid for them . To me I would have felt it was shoplifting .

Last time i was at a large chain store i bought two bags of hershey kisses they had on sale. When i got out i saw that they had charged me the full price for it. I looked at the customer service line and it was long. So i just gave up and took the higher price. IT happens all the time both ways. LIfe is too short to sweat the little stuff.

I think someone has to have real gall to go out and steal something. Its sickening to me, and I wish more shop lifters would be caught and banned from stores.

If you dont have proof of purchase, than I guess they would have to take your word for it. Not a good situation.

See, in that case it would be your error, not the cashiers. You didnt give it to the cashier to charge you for it, even though you forgot. I would go back in also, because it would freak me out to find something in my PURSE that was not paid for. I know people that would not go back in...

On the reverse ...there's a man here who withdrew from his account but the bank took the $279 from another account with the same name . Three months later he was jailed (Oct 2005 )He is now completely broke trying to clear his name .

The following is an example of losing your livelihood for a lousy few bucks - in this case $30.

http://www.wnbc.com/news/17478885/detail.html

What makes it scary is that everyone always says "it was a mistake, etc.", so if in fact it was just a mistake - you won't be believed anyway.:(
Hmmm, is that the only thing he bought? Doesn't say much. He could have walked out without paying on purpose or it really was an accident.

Last weekend I went to a local swapmeet, and found some used CDs I like from a vendor, so I asked to buy them. The asking price was $1 a piece, (I tried to negotiate to $5 for 6 cds but the seller refused) so I paid $5 for 5 cds and left.

When I got home, and open the cds, I found that in one case, there were 2 cds!! :). Now, I would come back to return the extra cd (or give the vendor a dollar) if only I noticed what she looks like or the place she sells. There are about 800 vendors at this swapmeet, and they are moving around, so there are no way I can find her to return the cd.

So, I unintentional got exactly what I wanted (6 cds for $5) :D

Heck no !!! I was at a yard sale once looking for dog blankets and saw a wrought iron chandelier which was exactly what I wanted . It was marked $20 and I offered $15 and we settled at $18 . It has an Italian tag on it and I could easily get over $200 for it today . All hand made with many details . Not my fault folks !! I sure wasn't gong to say " Honey , you should ask at least $100 for that ! "

hehe.. Don't ask, don't tell, eh? Since we're a vendor at this swapmeet, I have a chance to go every week.. I've found many, many great deals there.

My best purchases were a rarely used Mikasa China set (45 perfect pieces) for $10, and a brand new set of 8 crystal flutes for $1 :)
