If you found a £10 note on the floor (or whatever currency you prefer and can spend ;) ) - what would you do with it?
I would look around and see if anyone was looking for it.. if not, I would put it in my pocket and use it as lunch money lol.

My best friend a few months ago found a folded up money envelope full of $500 on the sidewalk. She's pregnant and single and very hard up for money. She called me - I don't know why, my morals are a bit twisted, and asked me what she should do. I told her to open a savings account for the baby with it. And I don't think she should've done any different.

Now, if I had found $500, I don't NEED it.. I have a good job and no dependents. I probably would donate it. One thing I wouldn't do is take it to the police. They're just as corrupt as anybody.

Boy am I full of opinions today.

If I see somebody drops the money, I would bring it to his/her attention or return it.

If I don't see anyone, then I tend to hang around a litlte bit to wait to see if someone would come looking for it. If nobody claims it, then i'd pocket it :). But this is only if it's small amount of money. If it's a huge amount, then I'd bring it to the nearest police station to return it.

The most I've found so far was a $5 bill so it was no biggie :)

ETA: haha.. I just read the post above mine, and she said she would never brought it to the police station.. In this case, say you've found $10,000.. What would you do? What is the best way to find the owner of the money?? Contact the local News station or ?

wc I believe that people who are really in need get what they need. Just like I always seem to get money when i need something... of course this sucks bc it seems EVERY time I get money something happens and I have to spend it! LOL. But, I would say that was "left" there for your friend to find... ;)

and yeah, I also believe bringing it to the cops isn't going to accomplish much except that maybe the receptionist suddenly finds herself with a big screen tv.

That would probably be me, so I'd give it back :D

I'd never take anything off someone I saw drop it... And likewise, if I found a mobile phone or something valuable/sentimental.

I found a 50 dollar bill at a checkout and gave it to the cashier. thinking back, that did no good because the person who lost the money likely didn't get it back from the cashier since she'd already left the store. If I see someone drop money (or anything), I always pick it up and hand it to them. If I find money outside and there is no one there (and it's not in a wallet or anything), I keep it

Interesting !!! If I saw who dropped it , I'd give it back . Otherwise , I'd let the store know I found it and give them my name and # . If it's a large amount , I'd let the authorities know but I wouldn't hand it over .

The person who dropped the 500 bucks could have needed THEIR money just as much as your pregnant friend. That could have been a single mother of 3 who works at mcdonalds that lost their paycheck. But then again mcdonalds employees dont get 500 dollar checks, but you get my point.

With that said, I think some things happen for a reason. Out of anyone, I'm glad someone in need found the money. The likelihood of finding the person who lost that money is slim.

My parents used to go out to the bar every pay day. They would take their entire check. As my mom was drunk and puking in the ladies room, a woman came in to help her out. Well, she ended up stealing my moms money right out of her back pocket. Her rent money. Some people are just no good, and to bring all that money WITH you to a bar, is STUPID. Thats why I always use PLASTIC!

Walmart story... My fiance cashed his stimulus check at walmart. The cashier gave him an extra 100 bucks. I guess the bills were stuck together. He didnt find out until days later.

I found a twenty dollar bill in Walmart (don't like shopping there but have same problem with small towns; our only grocery store closed, so what can you do?); and took it to customer service. Talked to the CS lady who said Walmart would take it if no one claimed it, so I asked them to put it in the donation jar for some kid with cancer. It wasn't my money to keep (or Walmart's), so at least it did some good... guess I'm a dork... but a relatively honest one...

I was calling Tom from a dorm pay phone during college ( long distance ) and when I put my dime in , about $3 in change rolled out . I called the operator and she said to re-deposit it . I did . The next week , the same thing happened ! That time I kept it . Guess I'm 1/2 honest !

If I didn't see anyone around looking for it, or see who dropped it, then yes, I would keep it........

BUT

This isn't the same situation because YOU KNOW who the money (cat litter box) belonged to. WALMART.

I have found a wallet with considerable money in it before. I am not going to lie, I was REALLY hoping there was no ID in it, LOL............but alas there was so I took it to the police station and turned it in (because it was in the road outside of a bar)

I just hope the money didn't go missing by the time the owner picked it up. But either way, it's not on me, I did the right thing, and I hope someday if I lose my wallet someone will do the same in return :)

Interesting thread. Everyone has their 'version' of stealing and when it's okay. If you would return it in front of your children, why wouldn't you when you're alone? What are you afraid they might witness by your example if you didn't return to the store? Is it okay to steal/not pay for an item based on what store the item is from and also what is the monetary limit that would compel a return to the store.

Simply possessing an item that was not paid for is a criminal offense in Canada, if you knew it was stolen. If a cashier is stealing from their employer by giving/not charging for items, and you know, you are risking getting charged just as much as the cashier who is stealing from their employer. An employee is risking jail time as the courts tend to be very harsh with those an employer has placed trust in and has stolen in return - very, very serious. It is not viewed as simple shoplifting.

Not doing a holier than thou thing - like all of you, I too have "well - it depends". :)

If i get charged twice for something small it's not likely I'd go back. I mention things at the till if I see them, and I usually do. At the parking lot it depends on my mood. If I've just hauled a baby and 10 bags out I'm probably too pooped to go back. I don't normally sit in the car and go over my receipts anyway. Now that I have Fiona though I suppose I'll have to put in the effort to go back. lol

To the original question, no I wouldn't have gone back.
Honestly I probably wouldn't even notice if I got something for free. It's a bad habit, but I never check my receipts or pay attention to the amount I'm paying. Guess I just assume that we live in a perfect world lol, I wonder how many things I've gotten a discount on, or how many things I've paid too much for. Ah well.

If I found money on the ground, I'd keep it. If I actually saw someone drop it I would give it to them... but if I'm walking in a parking lot or something and money is just lying there and I don't know who's it is, well it's mine now.

I don't think its dishonest at all. From working at Wal-Mart I noticed that when people came back with a mistake it actually did more harm then good. It made more work for us and if too many people came back with mistakes (that sometimes weren't even the cashier's fault, like the department workers marking prices wrong, etc.) we'd have to change the way we did things. It was a pain in the butt. When shopping at a big store like that, if you got a deal, just take it and run, lol.

My motto through life is that ultimately I'll have to answer to God, who's the King of all that is Justice & fairness. If I owe somebody something & I don't pay in this life, then I'd have to pay in the next life which is a gazillion times worse. Now that I have a choice to make, I'd pay now instead of later.

It's not easy trying to go through life not owning anything to anyone (and by owning, I don't mean just money) - but I hope at the end of my life, I can tell God at least I try.

Yes, I would have gone back. I don't shop at walmart anymore, I'm not a fan of it, but I still would have.
I'm honest to a fault a lot of the time. When I got arrested for having pot at school in 7th grade, I was intimidated by my serious PO. He asked me to verify my story and then I added, "Oh, I also had it the day before." He threw his back and laughed, looked at me, grinned, and said, "Oh, you are something else."
I guess what sticks with me is a sales clerk at a small store (no, not Walmart, but still) going over and dcoumenting everything that she sold. She did the same thing that the clerk did in this case, and when the money didn't add up she got accused of stealing and got fired.
I don't know, I try to be honest, even if it doesn't feel great to walk into a big chain store and give them more money.
