A chain is an inanimate object, it does not abuse, it does not neglect.

It is always the people who mistreat, neglect, or abuse their dogs that do the damage. Not the chain itself.

Stop putting the blame for the dogs misery on it's means of containment. Put it where it belongs, square on the idiot owner.

You'll rarely see pictures circulating the internet of healthy happy dogs on chains. Why?

It's not because it doesn't happen.

It's because the owners who do it right will never have AC take their dogs, nor will their dogs make the paper.

It's kind of hard for AR groups to garner much sympathy for their cause using pictures of well cared for chained dogs. Doesn't bring the money in ya know.

I've had both indoor and chained out dogs. You know what? There was very little difference in how they turned out as dogs. Why? Because they were well cared for and well treated no matter where they lived.

The problem is that most of those that are against chain restraining their dogs have never done it before.

I know that all here care deeply about their dogs. Would you feel any less caring if your dog was required to chained out? Or would you work harder at making sure your dog was healthy and happy where it was.

I understand the argument from those that have seen the results of bad chaining practices. It's absolutely disgusting to view.

I was the Canine Rehabilitation Supervisor at an SPCA and saw many heartrending things in my time there. But I never blamed anything other than the owners for creating the situation to begin with. We need to stop passing the buck on these issues, it's bad owners that are the problem. Not the dogs, not the breeds, not the chain, nor the kennel. It's the PEOPLE.

I have cared for hundreds of chained dogs, and my own dogs were required to be chained during the first part of my stay at the Minnesota Iditarod kennel. It sucks, it truly does. And it should be outlawed. If you (generic) can't afford a fence, don't get a dog.

And here's a photo of Khuno, moments before he was removed from his chain and taken to a veterinarian to begin supportive care.

And here's a photo of Khuno's teeth, ground down to the gums because he was gnawing on his chain and trying to escape.

Sorry, I didn't even think of that. And I can't go back and edit it now because it's been too long since I posted it. MODERATORS - Can you please put a graphic content warning on the link in post # 22 on this thread?

Actually, I'm going to PM a couple mods right now.

Again, really sorry, didn't think of that. But then again, I hope people do look at it regardless.

I can't even bare to take a look at any upsetting pictures and I haven't even read this whole thread. (sorry) My opinion is that no matter if the dog is treated nicely otherwise, dogs do not belong on chains....maybe for brief periods, but no way for long hours. It is potentially dangerous and it is no way for an animal to live it's life. It can cause frustration and aggressiveness due to fight or flight....the flight option taken away. It puts them in a very vulnerable place which also can cause defensiveness. It's just wrong to chain up a dog for anything more than a temporary hour or so here and there. So, it's not dependent on just the kind of people who chain them. Chaining in and of itself is not a way for any living thing to live it's life.

:hail: :hail:

And I base my opinions mostly from what I see with my own eyes. It is very rare that any chained dogs I have seen are properly cared for. Even if the are, as Doberluv said, it is not safe at all.

I just want to say that I would NEVER chain my dog out for more than an hour. Definitely not over night. Dogs are pack animals and need to be with their family. Too many people abuse the use of a chain or tie out. I have a fence, but dont force my dogs to stay out. They go out when they want (going potty, playing, getting some sun, etc.). They come in when they want.

I do NOT support chaining dogs, however my mom requires that my Shar Pei/Pit Bull mix be chained, and she's one of the nicest and calmest dogs I've met. She gets plenty of food, water, and interaction with us and her son Padfoot.

Oh Dober.. so beautifully said.

Middie was on a chain before I got him, and if anyone out there thinks having a dog on a chain for long periods of time is humane (and I don't believe anyone has said such a thing) I can show you his pictures beforehand, and then after, with me. They say a lot. His "owners" wanted a puppy for their grandchildren... and ohh they loved him. For the first week. Then he was too much of a bother to take anywhere because he pulled on the leash. So he was left on the chain day after day until he got so large he could pull any of us over.

What always makes me wonder about them is how they could stand the constant barking (and have it NOT make them heartsick and guilty, not to mention the eardrum pounding). He barked all night long, and was chained 20 feet away from their house with woods all around them, so you know the sound was 3x louder.

My dogs are chained and they are not mean! They get regular attention, we go fun places like the pet store, park, walks ect. but a majority of the time when I am not home and at night they are on the chain.
See but the difference with your chainging methods is. You dogs DO get of the chain and get to walk every day and go to a park, and socialize. Most of these chained dogs never leae the back yard once chained up. You do (atleast I'm pretty sure you do, as no real dog hater would be on a dog forum) lvoe your dogs, and give them the attention they need. Chaining doesnt make problems, it can create them over time, by undersocialized, underfed, and underloved dogs. but I dont think yours are those 3.

On that unchain your dog website I noticed 3 or 4 pictures stating a few dogs lived 12+ years on their chains, that is no life at all.
