Why you should NEVER chain a dog!!!

So there is another dog attack in my area/state. This one is probably the most shocking, to me at least. And NO, its not another pit bull attack, thankfully. The dog is said to be a rottie mix, which is quite sad because they have a bad rep just like pitties. Two of my favorite breeds. Anyhow, the dog ended up attacking all 4 family members... the family that owned the dog.

The dog was tied up in the yard and got loose. That right there tells me that he was probably an abused and neglected dog. Why would a dog attack an entire family of four? This is why you should NEVER tie up a dog for long periods of time. One of the most cruel things you could do to an animal. I feel for the two toddlers that got attacked, and the dog. :(

Heres the story...

4 family members hurt in dog attack

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

WHITE SWAN, Wash. -- Four members of a family required hospital treatment after being attacked by a dog after it broke loose from its chain in their yard, the Yakima County sheriff's office said.

A sheriff's deputy shot and killed the dog after it approached her when she answered a call for help Sunday morning at the family's home on the Yakama Indian Reservation north of White Swan.

Two of the victims were girls ages 2 and 3. The youngest was sent to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for stitches from a plastic surgeon. The other girl, her mother and a grandfather were treated at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital for bite wounds, a nursing supervisor said.

The sheriff's office said in a news release that one of the family's dogs, which appeared to be a Rottweiler mix, broke loose from its chain and attacked one of the children in the yard. When the mother tried to save the girl, the dog attacked her, too.

The dog followed them inside where it attacked the grandfather and the sister.

"The dog got off the chain and just freaked out," said Tana Girard, a Yakima County animal control officer who picked up the dog after the deputy shot it.

Girard said she will test the dog for rabies.

these kinds of stories are really sad. ofcourse we feel for the human victims of dog attacks but at the same time dogs don't think the way we do. its humans like us who put dogs in situations where they end up becoming aggressive and inadvertently hurting people, oftentimes the young, innocent ones who have done nothing.

Shudders...

I HATE how they have to test for Rabies... We had a cat that had to be tested for Rabies at work..

the Rabies people come and saw the head off for testing..

Its a shame what some people do to their "loved ones"

I bet if a human ( a gregarious social creature as are canines) Was tied up outside all day long with a small cell for shelter, no company, stimulation or entertainment, we would snap too. Heck we snap and attack other people under much less provocation, yet for some reason that rarely makes the news.

Yeah, I would view information coming from an animal rights org with skepticism. To the AR movement, anywhere that they can divide dog owners -- on topics of chaining, breeding, cosmetic surgery, hunting, etc -- is a step in the right direction.

I wonder if the dog was rabid. Rabid animals act erratic and have been known to attack, right? Although I think there are some obvious symptoms, so probably not.

I would say these are examples of cruel and inhumane treatment. Something that would have occured on a chain or in a fence. Chaining a dog is not inhumane, no more inhumane than fencing it. It's how that dog is cared for that is the deciding factor of responsibility.
You said it before I could! Chains don't make a dog mean. Undersocializing and abuse makes a dog mean.

the thing is that the excess use of the chain that makes the dog like that. and the excessive times it was probably ignored when it needed attention :(

I agree about chaining a dog. I does not make the dog mean and aggressive . Undersocializing the dog and abusing it make the dog mean and aggressive. PETA's facts and other AR facts about chaining a dog are false.

My dogs are chained and they are not mean! They get regular attention, we go fun places like the pet store, park, walks ect. but a majority of the time when I am not home and at night they are on the chain.

I tie my bruno out sometimes.

i have a 9 metre dog line going from one side of the garden to the other with a chain lead on it so it slides along the line so he can walk the length of the garden.

he has a huge kennel for shelter and water bowl, plus a sand pit toys and chews.

i tie him up when im out, its better then being cooped up in one room for a couple of hours.

The 2 little boys that live next door to me and know that I was a Vet Tech rescued a 4 month old pit puppy 3 weeks ago from a nearby yard. They brought me this little guy and wanted to know why his entire neck was red, raw, filled with pus and had no hair. Through my tears I explained to them that the choke chain wrapped around the puppy's neck had embedded itself in his neck and that now he had developed an abscess. I have lots of "doggie" medicine at home and with the kids help , we got the collar off and the kids and I took care of this puppy . I stopped in to see him today and the kids mom told me she had found a great home for him. The new owners have a fenced backyard and really love him. They have another dog as well. Sometimes there can be a happy ending, although working in the Veterinary industry has shown me that more times than not, most of these stories do not end up happy.

I personally do not believe in chaining a dog. I found this poem several years ago and have it hanging on my fridge. I think the poem speaks for itself.

POEM OF A NEGLECTED DOG

I wish someone would tell me
What it is I have done wrong,
And why I must be chained outside
And left alone so long.

They seemed so glad to have me
When I came here as a pup,
There were so many things we'd do
While I was growing up.

The master said he'd train me
As a companion and a friend,
The mistress said she'd never fear
To be alone again.

The children said they'd feed me
And brush me everyday,
They'd play with me and walk me
If I would only stay.

But now the master hasn't time
The mistress says I shed,
She won't allow me in the house
Not even to be fed.

The children never walk me
They always say, "not now!",
I do wish I could please them
Can someone tell me how?

All I had, you see, was love
I wish someone would explain
Just why they said they wanted me
And then left me on a chain......
