Back when there was a pet store in the mall here selling high end stuff, people contacted a lot of the companies and they did the same... once they were alerted that puppies were being sold, they pulled their products from the store. I believe Cloud Star was one and so did Planet Dog. The only "high end" food they had was Royal Canin though and AFAIK they aren't too concerned with their products being sold in puppy-hawking stores.

lol thats nothing. the price of a typical pet store puppy (yorkie, chi, maltese) in Miami is $1200. Ive seen up to $4000 for "tiny" pups that are obviously just VERY VERY young pups that are being shown at "10 weeks"
Where I live, there's a petstore where they'll put that price on a mixed puppy.

If you if you call they do something about it. I called AC on two horribly neglected dogs out here and they didn't do sh*t. It took repetitive calls from the whole neighborhood for them to do anything.

I'm so glad the store where I get food doesn't sell animals.

Lucy was a pet store puppy as most of you know. My mom spent $700 on her! $700 for an oversized tick-infested out of standard puppy mill chi. :( (Whom, btw, I love dearly)
Those who know me are aware that I know it was wrong and I will never do it again. For those who don't know me, let me just say I know a hell of a lot better now.

id definatly file a formal report with the NC dept of agriculture (they are usually the ones who deal with petstore inspections) SPCA cant do much, neither can animal control, has to be with your states D.O.A office. you want them to send their petstore inspector out ideally.

if you can, go back with a camera phone and snap a few pics to send to the DOA agent aswell.
and keep reporting if you can untill somethings done.
id also post on your local craigslist and hoobly the conditions of the store but wait untill after the ag officer has done an inspection, you dont want people going off and them and them getting wise to an inspection and fixing the issues just for inspection.

such a shame.
id also contact the brands of food and tell them about it too. many of the premium brands will pull their products form puppystores.

I had a repeat buyer who called me and I didn't have any planned litters for at least a year , He went to a pet store for a Golden and bought a pup for 1/2 again as to what I charged ...... that poor pup was so sick that 3 weeks later he had to be put down . It was so sad !!! AKC HAS to have better control !!!!!

Good advice, Foxy.
I would have suggested she take pics, but if I'm not mistaken, the dogs aren't even set out for the public to view. She only found them because she went through the wrong door.

ETA: I didn't even think of contacting the makers of the dog food. For those who suggested it, good thinking. If I were in charge of a dog food company I wouldn't want it sold in a puppy store.

Good for you for not giving them your money.

They sell high end food because people will buy it. Simple supply and demand. I hadn't thought about contacting the dog food suppliers. Contact all of them!
This is what I was going to say. Doubtful they sell the food because they personally know anything about it ... more believable they carry it because it's high end and they know it will sell. Bet that's not what they're feeding those poor dirty puppies .... :(

It's not up to AKC to control; they're simply are registry (and many of the pet store pups are CKC and APRI). Pet stores are controlled locally, by Dept of Agriculture and such. THEY'RE the ones who need to get on the ball and control this. :(

thats true collie, but now AKC is actually supporting pet store puppies (and of course in turn, millers)...

youd think since there now openly supporting petshop puppies theyd want to protect their "good" name by taking more of an active role in making sure those petstores buying miller born AKC reg pups are upholding that registrations name...

but like continental and APRI all they realy are concerned about is the cash for the litter reg, beyond that its "out of their hands"

Unfortunately A LOT of people think "AKC registered" means a lot, like quality, soundness, etc., when we know that's not true.

At one point ( way back ) I thought that they were keeping track of the number of litters a year and cross breeding . Now I don't think they give a **** if it has four legs ! Really doesn't matter as mills can use any of the papers they have on hand .

That sucks DC. There's one pet store here selling innova and such (they also have what's supposed to be the best vet for exotics there too) but they sell puppies. At least they're the best cared for pet store pups I've seen but you know they come from mills. They've had some strange dogs... the weirdest was a litter of 'borderdoodles'. They also had a papillon litter that I thought was a litter of sheltie mixes actually. They looked like curly tailed shelties.

I think the AKC does do some inspections, but I don't know to what extent that happens.
AKC does do inspections....

Some of the people I work for (Professional handlers) have been inspected by AKC several times. Pretty much every summer they show up, even though it's been almost 2 yrs since their last litter.

From what they have told me, AKC does go up and look at the kennel and the dogs, and make sure everything is ok, but they mainly inspect their records, making sure all litter/breeding records and individual dog records are up to date.

I've worked for them for over 4 yrs and they have been inspected each summer, and passed with flying colors, have never had an issue with them.

I work at a pet food store. We only sell food and supplies, not live animals (well, except crickets, but those are food, not pets), but all the time we get people calling to ask what kind of puppies we have, or they come in, walk rapidly around the store, and come up going "Why don't you have any puppies?"

We also have a cats up for adoption in the store through a local rescue - we house one cat at a time, the rescue handles the adoption process though, not us. All the time people ask how much we want for them, and then are dumbfounded when we say that they're not for sale, that they're up for adoption through a rescue and there is paperwork to fill out and a whole process.
