And while we're on the topic of the AKC (which of course we are not, but oh, well), what is this nonsense about "We can't do anything about puppy mills." SURE they can.

For starters, make it mandatory to inspect the facilities of every breeder registering more than x number of litters a year. And come down HARD on problem facilities. Maybe refuse to register any litters for a given length of time, maybe serious fines, whatever. Sure it'll be a gigantic task for the first two years. But the number of puppy mills will certainly take a nosedive, don't you think?

Put a limit on the number of litters that can be registered from one bitch. AND do some random genetic testing to be sure that the parents really are the parents. Something like the automatic consent for a Breathalyzer test; certainly you can refuse to take one--but then you lose your license.

Campaign vigorously for laws to regulate these places. Implementation would be cheap and popular, and politicians love that. They could take pictures with puppies. The public would eat it up.

Of course the AKC cannot wipe out puppy mills singlehanded, but they could certainly cut the number down drastically! Ah, but I lose my head. Fewer registrations = less revenue. How could I have forgotten what really matters!

yup AKC is supporting petshop pups, they actually developed a program called "PRIME" origioanally for petland, (it was in place when i did a very short stint with a petland)

the short of the way the program works is its a computer program designed for pet shops.
within the program there are pre made forms for the sale, return, refund ect of puppies (so stores can just print them out)
theres alot in it as well but one of the key features in the support of AKC and puppy stores is/Was that the store could send the "registration papers" of an income puppies parents (none akc) the parents registration is then reveiwed and the reveiw board will decide if that puppy would be "eligible" for akc registration...
yup puppies from none akc parents CAN be akc registered through this program

AKC’S PET SHOP (PRIME) PUPPY REGISTRATION & INVENTORY SYSTEM, SECRET PETLAND & PUPPY MILL SOFTWARE?

im not typically afan of thedogpress.com and just kind of read through any one sided, HOWEVER, after working with the program for 3 months at the petland i worked at their description of the program is SPOT ON...we were offered all the things mentioned in the article.
this was a couple years back, however as far as im aware (im still in contact with some "in the buisness") this program is still available through the AKC for petland and other select pet stores.

its all about the cash.
