Today I was at the pet store, and I brought Jack and Dawson (Siberian Husky & Rottweiler). Jack is 9, and a little shy and is practically Dawson's brother and tags around him all the time.

Anyway, a lady there was holding a toddler and their jack russel puppy. Anyway, she had only seen Jack's head because we were on the side of one of the shelves and she was in the aisle. Jack came out, and his mother practically had a heart attack.

" Oh my GOD, that dog is HUGE! He's so untame! What are you THINKING bringing a HUSKY into this STORE? What if he BOWLED OVER A LITTLE CHILD?" Jack was whining and howling, because he gets scared when people yell - he got a lot of that when he was in the dog mill.

" Please don't scream, ma'am." I said. " He's very sweet and very sensitive, and..." I just gave up because the lady sounded like Jack was a 20 foot tall bear with rabies.

Anyway, Dawson was sniffing something on the side of the aisle, and the lady started to advance on me, still freaking out and screaming at me. Dawson came out and stood infront of me and let out a loud bark, a back-off bark. I have NEVER seen him so protective before - he didn't like this lady waving her arms at me. The jack russel started to whine and tug away.

Anyway, because all rottweilers kill little kids and rip people's faces off every night, this lady runs to get the manager, her toddler holding her hand.

So, I just continued to look at the dog crates because I let my brother have Sindra's for his new Dutch Shepherd puppy. After 20-40 minutes, The manager came up to me and apologized, because everything had been seen on the serveilance camera. The lady was asked to leave.

I called my sister and she spazzed at me. She was like ' What are you doing Dawson to the store? He's a ROTTWEILER. It's YOUR fault he acted out.'

How is it my fault? They were leashed, and until it looked like the drama queen was going to attack me, Dawson ignored her. GRRRRRRRRRRR.

Sounds like that lady and the one in Romy's thread should get together. How does that lady hope to train that puppy when she obviously doesn't understand dog behavior?

Maybe this lady and the lady in Romy's thread are sisters.

Ugh that just made me so mad though!! I'm just not used to people freaking out with Dawson and Jack when they're the sweetest animals in the house.

That behavior (of the woman) is just . . . bizarre . . .

I've largely been spared the hysterical person screaming at me about my dog in public bit . . . though someone did tell me that Sarama has be vicious because she was clearly part wolf?!?!? At least she said so pleasantly . . .

You were in a pet store . . . if she is worried about dogs, perhaps she shouldn't be in one . . . and . . . so untame? What the heck does that mean?

Oh man, you don't live in Tucson do you? Or is it a full moon? Yeesh, some people just shouldn't be allowed out in public. I'm glad it was caught on video and they didn't believe her stupid rant.

Unfortunatley, there seem to be people that think that 'pets' should be under 10 pounds, been canine or feline, and preferably ride around in a handbag. otherwise, they are a menace to society.

Pet stores are like dog parks- you have to expect that dogs are going to be there. Big, small, all types. And if your brat, er....kid is afraid of dogs, then leave the kids at home. The end.

I must go to the petstore on the good days. I take my year old timid, very noisy sheltie with me and I've never encountered rude people.

Some people have let their dogs come up to mine to greet (which I don't allow)and once I explain that she doesn't alway greet nicely and she's very timid, they are fine to take their dog away from mine.

SHe doesn't like kids. One toddler was coming towards us and I stepped between dog and child and nicely and calmly told the girl (and Mom nearby) that she couldn't come and pet my dog because she wasn't used to children.
The mom actually thanked me.

Urg... I feel your pain!

I used to work at Petco - so I'm pretty sure I knew the store rules... ;) Keep that in mind when you read this story:

I was in Petco on one of my days off, training a little bitty 8 month old Ilsa - Petco is a great place to go to proof with distractions! Anyway, I've got Ilsa by the Cookie Bar in a downstay, I'm standing 6 feet away from her, stepping on her leash. There is no one else around.

A man comes up to me and VERY rudely says, "You're not allowed to do that here!" - he means train a dog, I thought. I told him that I did it all the time, and many others train their dogs in Petco too. He stepped up to me and said something like "NO - I mean you CAN NOT bring that breed into the store, it's against store policy!" Well, I thought this was a bit humorous, so, giggling, I ask why dogs 'like mine' aren't allowed int the store. The guy gives me this incredulous look, and yells, "BECAUSE THERE ARE CHILDREN PRESENT!"

It was then I started laughing, told him I was a Petco employee, and had been for more than two years, and that I'd have to go in back and check the employee handbook for that "store policy". He stormed off, dragging his little son with him.

I was mad, but it was fun being able to tell the guy off. :D
