Milo and Pixie........in case you didn't realize (I'm going to assume you didn't) the OP doesn't seem to be attempting to find a dog of ANY KIND.

He removed THIS link from his signature Dog Training 101 Newsletter - Free Report during the course of this thread.

I don't know if you realize (you should by now) just how many spammers we get every week..........a big chunk of those are LINK SPAMMERS. They post random stuff, random threads, just to get their link out.

Yes, sometimes it most definitely is deplorable the way new members are treated..........but a big chunk of the time when members and/or mods suspect someone of being nothing more than a spammer, it's BECAUSE THEY ARE.

Now you look at that link and tell me what you think. If he's 'peddling' that link, don't you think he should be aware of at least a few dog facts? Hmmmmmmmm?

If you click through that link for the "free report" you have to enter an email address, which only subscribes you for "great offers". You don't get taken to a page where you get to see this report. What you get taken to is a bunch of other pages where it asks for your email address (yet again) and then asks you dumb survey questions like, "Do you like saving money".

However, if I have unfairly misjudged the OP (jeffs), then I offer my sincere apologies and would like to buy him a beer if the occasion presented itself. Even if I haven't unfairly judged him, I'd still buy him a beer and sit down with him. Probably not a bad guy, just looking to make a buck even though his methods are something with which I disagree.

Apparently you didn't remember my post, it's MY personal list... I already stated that i'm pretty aware that they're not ALL used for protecting. I'd appreciate less diva comments too. Also, how do you shill a free report??
Diva comments? How about mod comments. (Go take a look at the list of staff.) And yes, I've already traced you. I came in an ace of banning you with your first posts, which were typical of what we get from hundreds of spammers on a regular basis, not to mention the tactic of resurrecting old threads -- especially stickies, but thought I'd give you a chance.

Eddie . . . now Eddie would have zapped you straight off, lol.

Wait, what? You mean you have to KNOW something about dogs these days to make money in the field? Somebody needs to get on the horn and notify a few "celebrity" trainers of this development!
Well, you do if you're going to get by my Chazzers, lol. At least without tar and feathers.

the GSD is the only one he listed that is used in large numbers by private security companies that offer guard dog services. the other breeds used in large numbers by such companies are belgian mals & dutch sheperds. this is because private companies usually follow the lead of military & police. not that the other breeds haven't been used professionally because they have. in fact i used to be aquainted w/ a lady that used a BMXrott for just this purpose.
I was pretty sure you were referring to GSDs.

The reason they're the most used breed is because of the breeds capable of doing the work, they are the most forgiving of novice handler's mistakes. It doesn't at all mean they're the best breed for the job. ;)

i haven't personally run into any human aggressive donkeys, is this common?
I don't know...I do know that I spent 15 years working with horses. I spent 6 weeks with a donkey at a summer camp. I got kicked more often by the donkey in six weeks than I did by all the horses combined in 15 years. But maybe he was just an especially mean one.

if someone really wants to learn about guard dogs a simple google search will turn up enough websites to educate them sufficiently to know what breeds dominate the landscape and what is causing people to back to nonherding breeds. in short the answer to his question could have been found in 1 search and a couple of hours of reading web pages.
There's not much point in a forum then.
All the threads here where people ask for advice or information could easily be answered with a google search.
Potty training, raw feeding, bite inhibition, flea/tick prevention...we get tons of threads on those and more. I find it much more interesting to discuss it with friends though than to google it and sort through which sites are accurate and which aren't and be alone in the process of wading through the information.

As for which breed is the number one guard dog? It's a matter of opinion. My vote would be with the herders...malis, bouvs, dutchies, gsds. I'm sure there are people here who would opt for a rottie or a dobe. And others who would go along with a mastiff type. IMO, the dog needs to first be a family dog. If he isn't something I want to live with, he's not going to be useful to me as a guard dog.

I wouldn't vote in the poll because billy bob dumbass might see it and go out and buy them a ____________ just for the sake of guard dog.
I didn't call the OP a dumbass, I said "billy bob dumbass" meaning the kind of people you DO NOT want having a dog that will bite might get this assumption of "oh the ______ is popular, I'm going to get one and make it mean and bite people" - so no offense to the OP but A. the list isn't very extensive and you missed some of the more common breeds used for protection work like Malinois and Dutch Shepherds, and B. Any dog that barks can be a guard dog, but if you want a specific more protection style dog, you'd be better fitted to do some research before investing in any of those breeds.

Or maybe Billy Bob Dumbass might read this thread and learn about different dog breeds and be Billy Bob Slowly-Getting-Smarter instead of Billy Bob Dumbass.

Just because THIS OP was trying to get his link out here doesn't mean everyone reading is. And it's not just this thread. A few weeks ago a poster with a question (which was probably not approached/worded in the best way) was attacked, someone who had 50+ posts about similar topics and was an actual member here. It happens WAYYY too often.

Yeah well it's a public forum, a good person with good intentions might read it and get one thing, or a f-ing moron with dumbass intentions might gleam something different from it. Tough luck.

I totally agree with not voting in the poll. However I think posting pictures and making jokes about the question is a totally immature and useless thing to do, not to mention degrading to Chaz.

Posting pictures and making jokes is what we do best. It's what makes us...well...us.

Have you never seen all the lolcat derailments? :D

I don't own anything that I value enough to have spiders and snakes roaming around my house to guard it. Keeping a donkey in my house is probably not a viable idea (it's a small house), and what good would a guard donkey do in the back yard? Who's going to steal my crummy sod?

My dogs are certainly not protection dogs, but they sure sound ferocious. If someone is determined enough to break into my house even with the Houndesses of the Baskervilles threatening mayhem, I would much rather the dogs ran and hid, as opposed to being hurt or killed protecting possessions that I value far less than I value them.

Greatest guard dog ever was Mary. She even knew how to control it and let me know by a quiet nudge and barely audible belly growl that something bad was approaching. Allowing me to summon the police without the perp knowin I knew where he was. Mary was way smart and twice as intuitive. That's the best guard dog there is.
She also beat Onyx to the curb without putting one puncture in her. I had another lab that saved my life by tearing away a door and scaring the bad person away by chasing them down brush creek, then coming back 20 minutes later on his own. So from my experience, the best guard dog is a lab. I will bet you can come up with some great guard dog story for every single breed there is.

On that list I would say a Rottie for pure defense and the GSD for overall working type guard dog. However, their is a wide variance with in each breed especially the ones you named.

As a pit bull owner I would put them last on that list based on breed average and purpose. They are far too trusting of strangers. Most of the APBT "guard" dog ability comes from their media enhance reputation.

The "best guard dog" isn't even on your list IMHO. Every breed has a purpose and each guarding job is different but If I was walking in a park and a mugger was coming at me and I could pick any dog to "Save" me I would pick the Presa Canario from working lines (maybe a well-bred Bandog). I am sure others will say Fila, CO, CAS, Boerboel or .....

I voted the German shepherd dog because they are fabulous companions and friendly (if the breeding is a good one) But theses dogs will recognize the need to protect their home if the need arises. That being said I think all dogs that are treated with affection and love and get the proper training will guard their loved ones.

Okay, so the real poll options for guard dogs should be:

1. Spiders
2. Emus
3. Snakes
4. Chihuahua Pack
5. Soft ball team of 9 year olds
6. Chuck Norris
I think this is a better list IMHO
1. Chuck Norris (Sal if the burglar is a hamburger with cheese)
2. Emus
3. Snakes
4. Chihuahua Pack
5. Soft ball team of 9 year olds
6. Spiders

The best guard dog I ever had was a big boned, 25 lb. ten inch tall Scottie. He had a broad chest, a big head, and a fine set of lungs. We lived in an apartment and if you didn't know what kind of dog was on the other side of the door, you would have sworn it was some kind of mastiff. So I say, the best guard dog is a short dog that is not a sound sleeper and has a big WOOF.

There's a sign I want.
Teehee!

And that's why all I really need is a dog who'll WAKE ME UP :D

If a criminal wants to come when I'm not home, he can have it all........I don't give 2 craps. Take it, it's only stuff. We are insured, and even if we weren't, it's STILL only stuff. I doubt their top priority would be the irreplaceable stuff, you know like family photos, things the kids have made for me, awards they have won, little stuffies that Kevin has won for me at the fairs over the years, all the sentimental things. Ya, that stuff don't have much market value, LOL, the rest can be RE purchased easily enough :)

If they come when we ARE home I fear for my children and trust me, I WOULD shoot first and wonder why they are there later. My .38 is loaded with hollow points, I won't be shooting to slow them down till the cops arrive ;)

As Renee always says, ONE story to tell..........MINE.
