I breed crested geckos. Have been for over a year and I am now looking to expand onto a new species!

Here is a photo of one that hatched out last night.

Fish.

Although I am unaware of any genetic health testing for a fish. Nor for that matter, surgical sterilization for a 2 inch Cichlid. :/

Seriously though, fish are typically very different than Dogs. The majority of fish are wild caught or bred via hormones. Basement fish breeders tend to run into far fewer problems than the major sources.

I'll admitt that my first litter of Jrts, that I was a BYB. I did take our girl to a JRT sanctioned trial and showed her, she placed high. I then waited around for hours to speak to the Judge (he was from England) and asked him if he owned this dog would he breed her? His reply was yes, he then went on to give me a wonderful lesson in conformation, type etc. Told me what to look for in a stud for her etc. The stud that I finally found for her was with a breeder that was very active in Jrt's and trialing etc. The resulting litter was a huge improvement on their dam, the ones that competed 3 out of 5 all earned Championships in several different events including a National Championships etc. So we didn't do too bad. Of course the more I competed and the more networking I did, I realized that what I needed to do to become an ethical breeder. So I rushed out and got all the genetic testing done after the deed was done and we got lucky. So far so good no issues or problems to date. My biggest mistake on that litter and that litter only.......was not selling one of the girls with a better contract. Although she has a wonderful home, they truely turned out to be BYB's by the amount that they bred her. And although she produced some lovely pups, there was no registrations, no genetic testing etc. That bothers me a great deal.
I don't regret breeding our first Jrt, granted it wasn't done entirely right there were some good points to it.
Plus I learned, have some awesome mentors now. I really don't like the breeding game, therefore I don't produce many litters. I breed very selectively and carefully once every couple of years to keep my lines going for MY purposes.

I was quite the BYB of rats as a kid. I became very knowledgeable and really loved doing it, but they were just pet store rats and we sold the babies back to the pet store and on occasion found them nice homes....:yikes:

I've never been a BYB, but I did whelp and raise a BYB litter... and what a breed for it to be...

A friend of my mothers had multiple strokes, and while she was in the hospital, her dog stupid children let her male and female FILA out together, badda bing badda boom, next thing you know the bitch is VERY preggie. So they come to us, screaming and crying how they can't take on this "responsiblilty" and since my mother is very dog savvy, could she PLEASE whelp the bitch and deal with the puppies.... My mother has been a Rottie person all her life and we had never even HEARD of what a fila was, much less what kind of temperment we were going to be dealing with. We had visited the male alot at the friends house, and he was a gem and loved us dearly, but this bitch who tried to eat us much less look at us was suddenly being loaded in our car. I dont know what it was, but maybe because they are such a amazing breed, the bitch let us basically do ANYTHING to her. She whelped *2* days after we brought her to our home and thankfully we were able to find all the puppies homes except the sire and a puppy we kept, and lost both this past September. It was def. a eye opener and at times because it wasnt a temperment we were familiar with, but it was also wonderful memories I will keep with me forever.

Nope, I have never bred a litter. I did help a friend whelp her litter one time........it was an experience. Don't think I would want to do it from start to finish myself.

It's not a job for everyone, that's for sure :)

My mums dog had a litter when we were young, she was a bull terrier/boxer and we bred her to a tan male that used to hang around our house. The pick of the litter was a gorgeous pup, mum kept in contact with all the new owners and the pick of the litter ended up with a pretty bad underbite.

we were alo planning on breedin gbother sophie and daisy  i know, before i knew any of this stuff. We found sophies "boyfriend" up north, we're going to drive her up next heat but he got stolen before that happend :( he was this big brindle mastiff mix.
Sophie just got too old and sore to even consider it though, which i['m thankful for.
Daisy we never met another little scruffy that we thought "matcher her"

Everytime sophie came into heat, she attracted every chi, foxy, jrt and litte scruffy in a 2km radius, but sopie was way to big for them to ever get her.
Daisy though, was this littel matlese/silky mix girl and all that she attracted we're bloody ACD'S! lol

I'm so glad it never worked out now, while I still think Sophie would be a great mum, she helped raise Bsuter and I'm now watching her raise Harry and Mac and I think she's fine with that.

I'll also admit, i was considering breeding my mice and keeping all the babies. But I had the sense to seperate them early and never ended up doing that either.

We also use to let our fish breed, they were all goldfish and we had a huge pond, it just kinda happened and we kept them all.

I am a fish breeder as well.... but not because it makes me money, but because it is one of my passions.

Although I haven't got heavily into selling them, I still breed them and once the tank hits max compacity, I sell a few to my local fish place.

If it makes me a BYB, I bred my gerbil twice when I was younger. I ended up with two rats, two mice, a hamster, and eleven gerbils. I think I just realized why my parents let me get a dog after they all died. That's a lot of rodents!

I've never bred dogs, but I was a backyard cat breeder. I didn't intentionally breed the cats, but they were barn cats and never got spayed/neutered. I kept nearly all the kittens, but I still feel guilty about it and all my future cats/fosters will come from the local shelter.

I personally wasn't, but my grandma had a lot of barn cats and we would always hope there was a new litter of kittens around when we came to visit. She bred rabbits too, but she also ate them, so it wasn't really a BYB, it was food. Same with the chickens.

I breed Betas in my bed room.
Breeding sheep but raising them for meat and show and wool.
I did back yard breed 2 horses but when I did the math and found out I would OUTLIVE them I stopped after 2 .
I did not show the horses they were not performance tested so that is as close as I got to the BYB status.

haha Jenn put two intact shelties in a bedroom when she was two... apparently they didn't like being apart :p

I guess that would be more of a bedroom breeding though.

It's always fun when that comes up :p

I guess my son thought it would be a great idea to become a BFFB since he left an old apple core in this bedroom waist basket. Thus his fruitful Bedroom Fruit Fly Breeding began. *sigh*
