Who has ever been a BYB? I know a lot of us wern't aware of what a mill, BYB or the overpopulation crisis all our lives. I know I had no idea untill a couple of years ago what damage I could be doing by breeding my dog.

anyone wanna confess?

Heh, I was a backyard bird breeder too - I had zebra finch babies this past spring. Beautiful birds. My dog, though, will be neutered as soon as the vet says he's ready.

**GASP!** Tosca, don't you know there is a horrible overpopulation of tomatoes? My neighbor alone has tons in his backyard that he doesn't know what to do with! (I hate tomatoes, by the way.)

I was a BYB of sorts fresh out of college, more or less just ignorant and had a severe case of procrastination. While no litter was planned, I did have a litter of kittens, and puppies at one point.
But the amount of time those litters required was far more than I was willing to give at the age of 19 so both were spayed once the pups and kittens had homes.
We all had to start somewhere, thankfully it didnt set off a lightbulb in my head and cause me to think " hey I can make money here"

Hey Milos, my tomatoes can beat up your tomatoes! This is the time of year when you have so many, you become very popular among the neighbors hey?

The silly man! He is supposed to make fresh marinara sauce with the overrun! Really, there is nothing worse than a tomato breeder who doesn't do right by his tomatoes!

When I was a kid my parents breed Nikki, the family Shetland Sheepdog, once. I think I was in 1st or 2nd grade. She had two pups. We had like 4 families on a 'waiting list', so that was interesting.
Nikki has been gone for a couple of years now, but we still get Christmas cards from the puppies families most of the time. Usually with a picture of Santa with a Sheltie :D It always puts a smile on my face, and a tear in my eye.
But that was way before I knew anything about health testing, BYBs, anything like that... I think we were very lucky nothing went wrong, and the pups have always been pretty healthy.

I did . I was convinced by my then MIL to breed my Boston Terriers. I had before and after that always had my dogs fixed. I got my Bostons fixed after two breedings gone bad. One a mixed litter which we kept and the other all pups died and mother was then fixed. MIL did not agree with my choice as she had three females and needed my male.

Oh I am a definate BYB of chickens as well... I have no issues admitting this, never had any chicks, but we do eat the eggs.
I want a baby chicken SO bad! I love chickens and then we'd always have fresh eggs. Do you know which are the best egg layers or are they all the same?

I bred a litter of hamsters for a biology project :yikes:

*Amy* from here took 2 of them, and my sister took the other 2. Amy's hamsters actually lived for like 3 years, which I guess is a pretty long time for hamsters.

I accidentally bred a 'litter' of fish of some sort once. The people from the pet shop had told me they were all males! They weren't... All of a sudden I had a bunch of little fishies swimming around. I managed to catch and save a few before the others ate them. o_O

I'm a bad breeder....
