Avenlee, that's the best possible way to work in a law office! I did that for about 8 years with a criminal defense attorney (in between his lunatic wife firing me - she thought anyone who worked for the man wanted to have an affair with him - WRONG!!! Not if he was the last man on earth - ever!)

Do you do any of the property records research? That's primarily what I do now, although I avoid straight title work like the plague and try to stick to untangling estates and boundary disputes and hunting lost and/or hidden properties (especially in divorces - )
I don't know how my boss's wife lives with him, and I probably see him more than I do my hubby at times and vice versa. He drives me nuts but, he's gone through my two youngest kids with the sniffles, dr. and dentist visits with alot of flexibility. He's really great that way!

I don't do title work, although I do run up titles from past clients when they come back to refinance ( I just run up from the last date). We contract out our title searches for the most part. I take care of dealing with the Realtors, Adjustments, Bank docs Mortgage and credit card payoffs, etc. I think I'd like the title searching better lol

Sounds like you've got a good boss, Avenlee. It sounds like he knows you're a valuable asset to his practice.

I avoid mortgage type work like it's the bubonic plague. I've made it a point to know nothing (as far as anyone knows . . .) about the banking side of it - and plan to keep it that way! I've got my life down to casual slacks and sweaters and don't want to get involved in anything that makes me drag out my dry-clean only, panty hose and uncomfortable shoes wardrobe again! :D

i design boxes. i work for Love Box Company. i design displays and stuff. it's ok, kinda scary at times though. i used to work for Smurfit-Stone Container Corp. but got laid off the Nov. after the year anniversary of the Sept. 11th thing. the economy slowed down so much, and they ( the corp. i worked for ) thought the best way to make up profits was to cut jobs. so i was out. i was unemployed for a bout two months when i got picked up buy the same company, just a different location. eight months later, laid off again, this time with no severance or anything. it was a very tough four months. i got really depressed, but had to hide it from my wife, cause she would have lost it if she knew i was worried about it. i almost cryed a few times at home during the day with no job or job prosepcts.
That's so tough to have your job yanked out from under you like that. Glad you found another!

Designing boxes and displays sounds pretty interesting. What kind of things do you design for?

Wow! Alot of diverse peeps :)

I am an engine guy. I always enjoyed equipment of all kinds and knew that was what I was going to do from early on. I worked for two large equipment corps and finally ended up working with Cummins until I quit in 2000 after 8 years in management.
Now I work at home and do consulting for corps and play on the internet :)

Chaz, what kind of Cummins engines were you involved with, the car and truck or heavy equipment divisions?

I'm kind of fond of mechanical things that are grossly overpowered myself - where would you guess the 750il came from? lol :D

They hired me for my construction/industrial equipment knowledge but quickly moved me into fleet sales (18 wheelers) as soon as they found out I could move iron :)

I used to be an exec. secretary until carpel tunnel in both hands. I did some marketing after that for a wholesale club. Right now, I stay at home and take care of my children (1 husband, 2 dogs, 2 cats). I take care of the house (mowing, painting, cleaning, fixing everything - my dad taught me well), but sometimes I think working outside was a little easier.

Oh, Barb! I agree working outside is easier - especially if it doesn't involve washing dishes! This is the first time in my life I haven't had a dishwasher. That's no way to live.

Now THAT would be interesting! When I was a kid, my Barbies had all sorts of fancy clothes and doll houses and furniture . . . but they also had a Caterpillar and some other heavy equipment :D

The equipment world is very challenging but a great mix of outside and in. I worked for Hertz Equipment and started a couple of branches for them, one in st. louis, the rest in Florida. The very best thing about running an equipment yard is that I got to bring my dog to work with me every day. Chaz had it made...

Now that is what scares me... carpel tunnel. So far I don't have any problems.

Designing boxes and displays sounds pretty interesting. What kind of things do you design for?

heres an example for everyone. in the Wal-Mart stores, hopfully they are still out, there is a big display for Hanna's Candles, it the Hometrends Brand. it has the big 6 X 5 candles on the bottom, some glass jar type candles on the top, and some of the glass plates to put them on. we designed that here, and manufactured it in OKC. another example of the kind of stuff we do that i'm sure evertbody has seen are the DVD displays at Wal-Mart. we don't design or manufacture those, but thats the kind of stuff we do.

we also did a pallet display for Starkist tuna. it had all of the new flavored tuna pouches. like hickory smoke, lemon and herd, garlic and something.

I've seen those, Sofa King. The use of space is clever; it takes some thought to get that much merchandise in such a small space and still display it effectively and attractively.

CHAZ: It's been found that Tai Chi and Yoga are great for treating carpal tunnel AND for avoiding it.

Chaz: Please tell me you're joking - you KNOW Tai Chi and Yoga aren't Chinese food!!! :D Seriously, I just about ruined my wrists working in a factory while a went to school. It even hurt to drive most cars. Fortunately, I found the BMWs had the proper ergonomics to keep my hands from going numb then throbbing with pain when driving. Whew, just think - it could've been Yugos! Anyway, once I started doing Yoga the pain started clearing up for the most part and now the only time I have a problem is when I have to drive something other than one of mine or Charley's cars (except his Toyota pickup, the one with the power steering . . . all the power you've got! lol).

So, how do you feel about Mexican food?

Wow, you all have such interesting occupations!! I'm a graphic and web designer. I work from home, so my dog Rosie has plenty of opportunities to bully me into taking her on numerous walks during the day. I work on a freelance basis designer web, print and broadcast graphics!

I work at a no-kill animal shelter. Right now, I'm positioned under our Behaviorist, putting in my hours towards trainer certification. Basically, I spend all day with the dogs, feeding, training, walking, playing ...

I love the job, keeps me very active (I walk between 5 and 6 miles a day, not counting walks with my own dog(s) at home). It's a heck of a workout, attempting to train 50-and-up lb. dogs that have never been leash-walked before - my arm is usually just about ready to fall off by the time I get home. But it's so gratifying, seeing them get adopted, and knowing I've had a part in making that possible.

I think the only downside is that I want to take so many of our "special case" dogs home, but can't.

Wow, yoga for carpet tunnel. I'm going to have to look into that. I've been in more pain lately so it's worth a try. I know what it's like to find the right car. Some steering wheels aren't loose enough. I now drive a Chevy Trailblazer which seems to be good.
