I wanted to make this a poll, but oh well.

Where do you buy your dog food etc. Grocery store? Small chain? Independant store? Big box store?

Alternative question, do they sell animals, and do you care?

I feed a raw diet, so I get their food from lots of different places. Grocery stores, hunters, taxidermists, meat markets, etc. There is a place that sells raw dog food, but I only buy tripe there. The rest of it is too expensive for me.

Food comes from a small independent pet store. They just sell dog/cat supplies and food, no animals.

Toys and treats come from petsmart/petco, 'cause it's so much cheaper. Yes, it really bothers me that they sell rabbits and guinea pigs and such. But that's because I worked at a rabbit rescue group for many many years, and saw sooooo many sickly rabbits come to us from petstores when people got bored of them.

Independent store. There's also an independently owned feed store I go to sometimes for other toys, but mostly I get everything at one place. I also sometimes shop online for treats and other stuff (and I get a huge box of $70 worth of treats mailed to me...) from dog.com and sitstay.com

I do go to PetSmart now and again - they are pretty much right down the road from me - but mostly it's just to get Auggie out of the house and into another environment, walk him around, socialize him to people and some other dogs if I can. We pick up "stuff" there more than anything else (they hardly have any worthwhile treats ever since I found that Old Mother Hubbard made Auggie puke...)
They carry Earth Bath now, and PetsLife Oral Gel as well, so I can get his shampoo and everything from them.

I really wish they didn't sell any kind of animal at PetSmart, but it doesn't make a HUGE difference to me as I don't spend a lot of money with them in the first place. We have a Pet Supplies Plus in town, and sometimes I buy a bag of food from them if I can't make it all the way out to our usual store. They sell fish, birds, and ferrets too, and same deal... I really wish they didn't.
Our usual store and the feed store don't sell any kind of animals.
There is a store in the mall that sells puppies, and I refuse to even set foot in there.

I buy cat food from a small independent store, one of the only ones around with good food. They do sell animals, rodents, hermit crabs, birds, turtles etc. but appear to take very good care of all of them. no cats and dogs are sold there of course.

I buy food and whatever supplies I can from the Tractor Supply about 1/2 mile from my house. I live about 20 miles from a Wal-Mart and about 25 miles from Petsmart, those are the next closest places that sell any pet supplies. Tractor Supply is a bit more expensive, but I like supporting local businesses rather than large chain stores. Plus the dog food they sell is better quality than most foods at Petsmart (although I do buy my cat food at Petsmart... oddly the best thing for cats at TS is Science Diet.).

I usually buy toys at Wal-Mart, though, because they're so cheap there. Especially if I know a dog is going to tear up anything I give him anyway, I'll go for the $.89 squeaky toys.

I do go to Petsmart to socialize my dog, she enjoys the store and there are almost always other dogs to practice being around. I don't usually go to Petco because of their line of Cesar Milan products, and I'll RARELY even walk into a store that sells puppies/kittens and NEVER spend any money in that store.

Pet Supplies Plus for Taste of the Wild, though I need to find a new place because they do not carry enough quality cat food and I end up getting either CHicken Soup or Solid Gold every time. The Pet Supplies Plus before I moved carried TOTW cat food. They do sell ferrets, rabbits, hamsters, and stuff like that, fish, and birds...and maybe some reptiles. The rabbits have been in there for a few months now (the same ones), so I feel bad for them. The cages are clean for all the animals, though, and none look sickly.

I go to Petsmart or Petco once in a while for other stuff or toys just to take the dogs to a different place

Petco/Petsmart a lot for toys and some brands of cat kibble. The rest of the food is bought at a feedstore. It bothers me that the big box stores sell animals, but I don't have a lot of options.

Hmmm well there is this store called All Creatures Great and Small that I frequent :D

I buy all my food from a Raw Co op every few months.

I sometimes go to the big chain stores.. but I really like going to Ren's Pets.. the deals are great!

And my answer will sound like I follow you around! ;)

Small independent store for food; Petco/PetSmart for treats. I do catch myself at these places lurking around the animal cages and putting in my 2 cents regarding food/care and caging needs, etc. I think I do more than the people that work there about deterring the wrong people from buying an impulse "pocket pet" or reptile.

Hmm.

The bulk of our raw food order comes from the two co-ops we are members of.

Canned food and kibble comes from an independent store.

Toys come from another independent store.

Treats as of late have come from World Market because they are the only ones that carry the new brand we feed (aside from the ones we make at home).

Banzai's food, unfortunately, comes from Petsmart, but they are the only ones who sell it and it drives me mad. I don't like to support stores that sell animals, etc., but Banzai loves this food and is doing pretty good on it. Until I can get something else figured out (I'm thinking he will eventually be on a strictly home-cooked diet sooner rather than later) he'll eat that food.

We have no local pet stores here, so we have no choice other than to go to chain stores.

Wal-mart for cat litter and cat food
PetSmart for dog food, some collars, rat food, rat bedding, and all the pet's toys
Tractor Supply and Scruggs for horse tack, treats, and grooming supplies
Vet office for other dog collars

Dog food from Costco...and toys, shampoo, clothes from wal-mart. I feel bad for the fishes, but I buy at wal-mart either way to get supplies.

Pretty much everything comes from one of two locally owned stores, both owned by people I know and like. I try to buy equally from each; only one carries the food that I feed (Orijen) so I usually do treats/collars/toys at the other one. Really nice stores with high quality products and good advice.

We do have a very conveniently located Petsmart that I will occasionally run into for things like tags (quick and easy with their machines) but I doubt I spend even $50/year there.

There is another locally owned store that does sell small animals/fish/retiles, and I used to shop there because they do sell some of the nicer brands of food and treats, but they started selling puppies and kittens probably 3 years ago, and as a result I haven't been in the store since.

Pet Valu. I can walk there (I can see if from my house) and Xena likes to go there because they give her treats. They don't sell animals.

I feed raw, so their food comes from the grocery store. Their toys are whatever I can find in the bargain bins at various stores---they are very rough on their toys, and no matter how pricey or high quality the toy, they never last long. So I don't bother with the expensive toys any more.

Feed Raw as well so much of the food comes from meat markets, hunters and a few local small businesses that specialize in raw foods for animals. All the other apparel either comes from a local business here that sells horse and dog products or online.

The Kennel Shop, a small chain store. I get the EVO red meat, also cans and frozen raw premade food.

I also get some supply, like toys and grooming, at PetEdge.
