I've found that numbers depend on breed for me.
I have 1 GSD and I'd never want more then one at a time.
1 Doberman. I'll add a second in a year or two as that my GSD is aging and I prefer two hyper alert guard dogs.
6 afghan hounds. The 6 afghans combined are the work of the GSD and the Doberman. They just are not needy busy dogs. The major part is grooming and grooming a dog isn't any harder for me then brushing my own hair I've been doing it so long.
