Some people dont' want the "expense" of AI... let's face it there are more people out there who think breeding should be cheap easy and convenient for THEM vs the dogs... That's why they are called Puppy mills.

First of all, I would not use one of those things, but some bitches will not stand for ANY male dog. And I own one. We have only EVER had one successful breeding out of 4 and she would never stand for either of the two different dogs used. (not on the same heat cycle obviously) Three out of 4 times an AI was done and two out of three times it did not take. Yes she was restrained (people holding her) during the attempts that were made, and even on an AI you must hold the bitch.

And yes, this bitch is OFA good Elbows normal CERF clear PRCD (which is our genetic test for PRA) "B" She also happens to be an AKC champion working on Rally/obedience/agility titles :)

They do that with horses too. It seems that with horses they are at their most fertile as they are going OUT of season and are less responsive. I let my trainer use that on my horse (she accepted for the past week but the last day didn't really want to) and I regret it. I think everyone there felt it was wrong but it was just done. It wasn't anything like that contraption though.

Never used the contraption, never even seen it, but i have helped before. It always reminds me of those commercials, "its shake and bake, and I helped". Anyway, AI isn't better than the real thing. The natural act "primes" things so to speak and you miss out on a lot with AI, just a fact.

and if you want a certain bloodline there are cases when you "need" to help for the safety of your dogs. breeding in the wild isn't always pretty, there are more than a few animals injured during mating rituals, its just a fact of life. When someone has thousands of dollars invested in the dam and the sire, most people do it as precautionary measures so one or the other don't get hurt.

Like I said i've never seen the contraption before, but helping during mating is nothing new and its done by lots of people that have nothing to do with puppy mills.

Live and learn. I've never had a female that wasn't fine at the right time. That time sure can vary..... I had a female in to breed once that was way past the normal breedable time ( I had her for 3 weeks )... finally called the owners to come and as she was on her way home the next day , on her way to their car... she stopped , lifted her tail and Rufus nailed her . Successful ! She stayed and was bred again the next day ..
