Sorry... I'm sort of scared of horses.

They're so big.. and I'm so small. I've only been on a horse maybe 3 times in my life, and that was when I was small.

I really like them from afar though :)

I thought it was cute when Kate Winslets character is talking to Leo in Titanic and she's talking about horse back riding and she says, "you mean they ride horses with one leg over the side and the other leg over the side in the US".. lol

Some horses really aren't that big. Especially ponies. If you rode Fannie, you'd never want to get off! (Except when your legs get sore. LOL!) But I can understand being afraid of horses.

Bareback! :D

I've only ever rode English and bareback. Would love to give western a shot at some point.

I really like Shetland ponies. Those smallish horses I can handle :D

As a kid and a teenager, I mostly rode bareback all the time except in shows....a little English and Western. As an adult, I rode western and skipped the bareback most of the time. For hard trail riding...long, all day rides, steep hills, rough riding, a good western saddle is so much more comfortable IMO and you do less "work" than English or bareback. And that's the kind of riding I did mostly. As an adult, I got lazier and enjoyed the western saddle so much better than bareback on longer trail type rides.

There really isn't a "best" way, I don't think. It's all preference. However, I firmly believe that when kids are learning to ride, they should start out with bareback as I think it makes for a good seat, good balance etc. You really learn to feel the horse and become a better rider, more glued to the horse...or one with the horse.

LOL Honeybear. You were so fast in replying, you didn't see my edit. More comfortable yes...when you're young and you have a nice, big horse with no backbone. LOL. When I got to be in my 40's, I appreciated my suede padded western saddle on my little, explosive Arabians. LOL.

Western or bareback. I have always ridden western english just takes too much.......Perfection I guess. Its just not my style. I used to compete in barral racing before my parents divorced and now im boarding my horse out of state. I like bareback too because it takes alot more leg strength and balance atleast for me. But once you get the hang of it its fun.

Western pleasure is my first love, that is for sure. HOWEVER, having ridden English, I do enjoy it. And I loved the time I rode Angel bareback, but I haven't had a "broke" horse since I was 10, so I haven't had any horses before or since Angel that I have trusted that much.

The honest truth is that the back of a horse is therapeutic for me no matter what is between me and the horse. I can PHYSICALLY feel my stress melt away from me the second I seat myself and take the reins up.

I'm all western or bareback. Having learned to ride working on a (cattle) ranch I'm pretty partial to western. I've never ridden English. I love bareback though. It's so freeing and gives a good workout.

I can't get out of the habit of posting ....which is hard bareback or western ! My last ride 2 years ago ( at 71 folks! ) was English and then bareback into the Caribbean waters ! Was a hoot !

I like both western and english equally, for different reasons. I do find western to be more comfortable though. I don't enjoy bareback at all. I constantly feel like I'm going to fall off, eventhough I never have.
