I'm a newbie - but I guess I'll post too

I just graduated with my Bachelors in Biological Sciences from the University of Missouri - Columbia. I am now working as a Research Technician in the Veterinary Pathobiology department at the University. I am part of the cryobiology service team (cryopreservation of rat and mouse embryos and sperm) and the manager of the Transgenic Animal Core. My husband graduates in May with his degree in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and we will be moving to wherever he gets a job. So, as much as I love my work, I won't be there forever.

I am basically doing my dream job - I love research because each and every day is different, there's no time to really stagnate. If you get bored, there are always new skills to learn! :) Hopefully, I will be able to stay in Developmental/Reproductive research maybe moving more toward stem cells.

The worst job - ummm probably working on my dad's farm. I was a prissy teenager, and driving tractors from 7am until 9 or 10pm and then going on dates with hydraulic fluid and oil on my hands was pretty traumatic to say the least! :) That is, until I married the "help".... :lol-sign: (my husband worked on my dad's farm with me...)

Animal control was my least favorite job ever. I was not suited to it at all, as I hated confrontation. I worked in a small, fairly "upscale" city, so it was mostly "my neighbor's dog is barking" type stuff, or "it's still sunlight, and I saw a raccoon. It must be rabid, so please come shoot it."

Plus, there is no worse feeling than being bound by the law. The city had the common rule that all dogs with food, shelter, and water were being adequetly cared for. Nothing like having to tell people, "Yes, I agree with you. That dog's life sucks, but there is nothing I can do about it." Or dealing with the outrage when a professional dog trainer's e-collar malfunctioned and started zapping the dog non-stop at a very busy park. Uggh. Seriously, the next time you want to vent about animal control officers (and it happens quite a bit), take a moment and remember that they have to follow the laws, too.

The "meat" buyers for our equine compradres disgust me to no end. I buy and sell a plethora of horses on a monthly basis, yet, as discussed before, I INSIST both verbally and per contract that their demise is N-O-T a packing company!!! I applaud you for your compassion concerning this issue!!! OOO RAH's for You!!!

My least favorite job was when i worked as a groom at my former college's hunter/jumper barn. Those poor horses were all donated so most of them were very old and in a lot of pain. The college didn't care, and insisted on pumping them full of meds so that the students could continue to ride them. I only stayed at that college for one semester after they sent my favorite old pony to the meat buyers when he couldn't jump anymore. :(

mojo-rizen that sounds freaking awesome!

i work as a vet tech. the pay sucks, and the clients are sometimes absolutely infuriating, but i work with a fantastic bunch of people. i'm by far happier here than i've been at any job in the past.

my degree is actually in english and sometimes i think about getting out of the vet med field and into something having to do with publishing, but i never seem to manage to leave.

in my spare time i goof off with the dogs a lot, waste entirely too much time online, and read a lot (~100 books a year).

What do you do for a job? Do you like it? Right now I don't really do anything except help a friend out with her bead shop. I don't have an opinion of it yet lol
What is your dream job? I don't know. I want to be a stay at home mom but hope to start a dog day care type business when my kids are old enough.

What is your favorite job from your job history? My favourite job was doing singing telegrams. It was only 7 minutes of work for $30 lol and it was FUN.

And what do you do in your "spare time" - do you have an interesting hobby that people don't know about? I like hockey and like to go to my hubby's games. I take a line dancing class. Play with the dog. relax at home with my husband. I also like to paint ceramics and woodworks.

Current job: High school student. Occasionally I train dogs and puppies when asked, but I wouldn't call dog training a profession for me. Just a hobby.
Favorite job: Dog groomer
Worst job: Part-time at a horse stable. Horrible, horrible boss.
Dream job: I have a few. First on my list would be veterinarian, but lately I have my doubts that I could get into vet school. I'd love to train animals for a living. Maybe a photographer . . . Fat chance, but it'd be fun and would give me an excuse to travel.
