I don't care if Quinn barks at people at the door, or jumps on me. She only does it when she hasn't seen me for awhile, and she is so gentle. She doesn't keep jumping - just very lightly puts her paws on my waist and keeps them there. She also doesn't LLW. I wish she did but I've kind of given up - she doesn't pull hard, but she stays at the end of the leash.

Ned isn't allowed to jump like Quinn is. He's still pretty gentle but is a lot more excitable than Quinn. Whereas she'll jump up once or twice and stay there, he'll jump, run around and go to someone else, come back and jump again, rinse repeat. I'm also being careful to maintain a nice LLW with him, not because of anything he's done, but just because of my mistakes with Quinn.

eta; They're also allowed to mooch. As long as they don't whine or bark, or stick their nose in my plate, I don't care if they lie down and watch me eat.

My dog was not the type to respect personal space. No jumping (because 100 pounds of GSD is pointy and heavy), but head-bumping, lap-sitting, and general physical contact with every human being on Earth was the norm. He routinely begged (by sticking his nose in my armpit during dinner). And whined constantly (although that is one behavior that I HATED but couldn't get rid of).

My dogs have like no house manners. Ask Megan, I'm pretty sure it drives her nuts.

Pretty much the only thing I enforce is that Siri isn't allowed to bark at the rats.

I can't stand when dogs beg for food, so they both go away at this point when food comes out. Siri doesn't really beg though, because I didn't want her to end up like Frodo so I didn't ever let it be an option for her.

I hate excitement-based barking, it just grates on me. But I'm fine with alert barking. Which is good, because guarding is kinda what Shar Peis do.

I love and encourage dog-kisses. I know that leads to some weirdness with people who are uncertain around dogs or don't like pushy behavior, because then the dog goes right up for kissing the face, but that's what I like and I'm sticking to it :p

As long as the dog doesn't bulldoze into you repeatedly, I also don't mind jumping up. I taught Astro not to jump up for the CGC test but have gotten more lax about it recently, because honestly he's just about the gentlest jumper I've ever encountered (he hoists himself up and stretches his head up to give you a kiss, but he never has any force behind it or knocks anyone over - it's surprisingly dainty, considering his personality....).

I also give Astro his special meals (holiday dinners) on human plates, for added fanciness, so he has no qualms about stealing nibbles from plates left unattended for too long (though he does a very good "leave it").

I do teach a nice "sit," "back," etc. so he's not a wild, uncontrollable beast, but overall my preference is for big, lovey, needy, in-your-face, pushy dogs who aren't afraid to demand attention. Astro plasters his 40 lb+ self all over me when I'm the couch constantly - I just laugh, I find those kinds of dog antics funny. Honestly, if I didn't have to live amongst other people and deal with others' preferences, I'd have a bunch of enormous hound-dogs and Rotties who throw themselves full-force into your lap the second you sit down :p

I don't mind some barking while playing and training and such, but unnecessary/boredom barking is obnoxious. Unfortunately for me, boredom barking is Kimma's specialty  Alert barking is fine by me as long as they know when to cut it out. Again. Kimma issues

Jumping I kind of encouraged for Jari when he was a baby pup. He is so cute and cuddly and yeah. So now I get to fix it. Mainly for the CGC test. No one else seems to care. He's pretty good about not vaulting off of people like he does to me so I'm hoping that at least stays that way. He is at a good height though where he sometimes hurts Justin (if you know what I'm saying), so sometimes I feel bad about that.

I don't mind tension on the leash as long as my shoulder isn't being pulled out of the socket and they will walk "with me" if need be.

Furniture is fine for jumping on as long as they will get off if I ask. Coffee table + Jari is still a work in progress. But it's cute because he will lay on it and sleep sometimes :p

Watching me eat is also OK. If they are being really good and letting me have my space they know they will most likely get something (either dog or people food).

Lol. The only things that grate on me are walking on the living room and end tables (but Frodo laying on the kitchen table really doesn't bother me, haha). And the house training thing.

ANYWAY! :rofl1:
I've always tried to have well behaved dogs, because that's how my dogs earned their way into the house in the first place (crazy to think now that they were only allowed to be in a very specific area of the house).
Let's just say that Buzz was always put away if there was food involved. Behind a solid door or in a crate (baby gates never did stop him for long). Because he would literally jump onto the table to steal food. No amount of training I did changed anything, so I gave up and managed it. Now he still tries to shove his head in my plate/bowl/glass if I'm at his level, but he can't get on the counter! Bailey was so easy to teach to leave stuff alone! I may have done a total of 5 training sessions about leaving food alone on a table at her height, and she got it (we learned at the holidays that she doesn't still do that, haha).

My rules are:
Alert barking is fine, but stop when I ask you to. Other barking in the house is just annoying, take it outside.
No begging for food.
Walk politely on a leash (Buzz came pre-programmed, Bailey took a lot of work, Gabby took months but is really good now).
And you must be okay in a crate (or in Buzz's case now, in an xpen).
Door darting is annoying. Unless Gabby is convinced she's going to work with me, she doesn't even go to the door with me, but hangs back in the hallway like a good dog.
Because of Bailey, all greetings and leavings are No Big Deal.

I have less rules for my cats. I let them walk on the counters which, if you'd asked me even two years ago, I'd have shuddered in disgust about.

THEY DO! It's like watching them play the floor is LAVA! Especially when Siri sees something on TV she must investigate while the floor is lava!

:rofl1:

And Frodo says that tables are a great gateway to laps.

Right. They can essentially go from the window on one side of the apartment, to the kitchen table on the other side of the apartment, without touching the floor. Because it is made of lava. This is IMPORTANT!

I've gotten so much worse with each dog, its terrible.

Jasper had lots of rules and boundaries and was never allowed on the furniture. He doesn't really alert bark much, but he does bark when excited/playing and it drives me crazy. He has excellent leash manners and is just generally quite good.

Yarrow is allowed on the furniture but doesn't really spend much time there, and obviously has to get off when told. He runs and hides when people come over, so no noise there. He loves to lick faces and I totally let him, but he will only do this with people he knows really well so it's never really been an issue. He occasionally jumps up and I think it's so hilarious that I just let him, he's so big he can just put his front legs on your shoulders. He so rarely does it that I just don't worry about it. He would steal food if it's left out somewhere obvious.

Onyx is a bit of a terror...she is definitely my worst counter-surfer, but I actually really don't like this so we're working on it. She is almost always on the couch, and she gets pretty close to food if you're eating on the couch. She is really big into alert barking, usually for a reason, but sometimes for no reason. I really don't like alert barking for no reason, but if someone is actually at the door then it's ok. We're still working on her consistently shutting up when I tell her to...She will take shortcuts over the coffee table from one couch to another, and again I just kind of think it is funny, she doesn't do it very often. Probably someday she'll knock a drink over onto the laptop and I'll regret that. She also jumps up like crazy, I let her do it on my and don't mind at all, but do try to discourage doing it on other people. She also bites, bites, bites. As long as its gentle, it's ok, but she does have to stop when I tell her to.

Hudson does what Hudson wants.

That said, counter surfing is mostly not allowed. It's handy that he isn't tall enough to be good at it.

He's also not allowed to come running into the kitchen and launch himself at the back of whoever is unfortunate enough to be at the sink.

He is also not allowed to steal food. Sometimes he heads up on the chair behind me, resting his head on my shoulder, but the second he even acts like he is going to take the food, off he goes.

Not allowed to stare.
Meanie! :p

My girls aren't allowed to jump unless I say "up", and they aren't allowed to fixate on things. So I guess Jess isn't so mean.

Stealing food is a big no-no, but I only have problems with Lucy on that front. Both of them have good manners while you're eating... it's if you leave food unattended.

I let the dogs do a lot of things IF they have a reliable 'stop it' type command. For instance, begging. I don't mind them begging a bit because they're very easy to verbally correct. I don't mind them on the furniture because they always get off when asked.

One thing that Rhys does that Henry has never done is jump up on people. And I really don't mind. I let him stand on his hind legs and stretch on me for attention when he's excited to see me, because once I've had my fill I can say "off" and he will stop.

I actually don't fuss at him about jumping on people, because invariably I tell them to ignore him and he will stop, which they rarely do. I have a few friends who are dog-savvy and actually listen to me, so he stops the jumping immediately. So I honestly don't see it as a problem behavior.

Rules.... let's see....

No jumping up
No counter surfing
No getting into the garbage
No getting on the furniture (unless you're Lucy)
No door dashing
No unnecessary barking (err... Lucy and Cajun don't think this one applies)

Mouthing is okay if we're playing. I don't care if your head is on my lap when I'm eating, just don't you dare attempt to actually steal a bite. And I expect everyone to sit still and behave for grooming/handling.

I just like... polite, easy dogs. Not that mine are perfect 100% of the time. But rude/obnoxious behaviors are highly annoying to me.

My dogs are hooligans I admit it. On the furniture. They both bark. A lot. Mia demand barks. They both do laps around the house when excited. Mia screeches. Mia nibbles in affection. They both walk across tables, wtf.

My only requirements are walking really. On leash they need to be good. Off leash they need to listen and recall. Tey are great at both of those.

Crate barking is probably the worst. We're working on it.
Lol my phone totally changed etc to wtf. I guess they both work.

This. I don't like jumping, and I don't like mouthing. I don't like it when other peoples dogs do it to me, either

It'd be easier to list what he wasn't allowed to do...

... oh wait, I can't think of anything  Honestly I don't mind an obnoxious dog and find it more funny than anything. I guess his one rule is that he isn't allowed to jump on kids or be rambunctious around babies. Oh, and no chasing cats and no door dashing. Everything else I either don't mind, or has just never been a problem.

His bad behavioral habits include barking obnoxiously, charging and barking people at the door, jumping on me/family members, sleeping on furniture, begging, pawing at me, etc. That's all fair game.
