Mira's first litter was born today via caesarean section. While I prefer a natural whelping (and natural breeding) whenever possible especially with a first-timer, we decided to do the c-section when we saw this:

So around noon today we welcomed Mira's 21-ounce singleton boy puppy into the world. They are home now (well, home = Mira's breeders' house where they will be spending her maternity leave). He is thriving and has a round belly filled with colostrum/milk as he snoozes next to his warm mom, on a warming pad surrounded by stuffie "siblings." Speaking of mom, Mira is also doing well :). Due to the c-section she missed out on some key transition hormones so is still trying to figure out what exactly motherhood means, but she is being very careful with her feet, letting him nurse, and checking in on him frequently if she's not actually in with him. Combined with her natural tendency to adore and mother puppies, these are all very good signs.

She's a very good girl, and he, despite being in the wrinkly hamster phase, is completely wonderful from his wrinkley nose to his pretty arched neck to his wee toes and long puppy tail. Strong and active and already making his demands known and quite willing and able to go in search of whatever it is he wants.

Aww congrats to Mira. Dekka had a bit of difficulty with the hormone/c section thing too. But it sounds like Mira is handling it very well. Strange only one puppy, such a big dog compared to mine :) Seems like there should have been oodles of room in there lol. Was he ginormous by breed standards when he was born?

Yeah he is big for a newborn FCR but not colossol. Normal is more the 12-16 oz range, maybe? But I know of FCR puppies that thrived from 6-24oz, which are very much extremes, so he certainly is on the upper end -- like giving birth to a week-old.

Considering we bred a maiden bitch with semen from 2002, I am very grateful we have any puppy -- a big thrivey healthy boy is wonderful.

So cute. Do you know if he'll be staying with the breeder, or does it depend on how he matures?

He will almost certainly be going to live with his 13yo half-sister (from his father's other litter) to hunt and do dog sports and be a very active family companion, and will hopefully be tied back in/collected once he matures and we see how he turns out.

Snoozin' with Mom

Wee boy noggin

Already up and exploring -- between naps and eating and pooping he does laps around the whelping box, crawling through toys and under and over blankets and just in general checking things out.

And then back to napping. And growing :)
