Well, her head looks similar to the dog in your avatar....in the cheeks, wide head, wrinkles on top of the head, ear shape and set. Oh, I had some pictures of her somewhere posted, plus in my gallery. But I'm on someone else's computer (for a while...I'm out of town) and I can't seem to get to my own computer pictures to post. But my son suspected it too because where he found her (in a garbage bag in a ditch at 4 weeks of age) there were about 3 or 4 Pits who lived on that street. No one knows for sure. But because there are so many Pits around, the liklihood of having those mixes is probably higher than having an English Bulldog get in there, at least in the area where she was found. (one of the arm pits of the pacific northwest)

Anyhow, if I can post a pic, I will.

Doberluv, do you consider your Doberman to be genetically hardwired for aggression?

Um, I just don't understand why this was made into another thread about Pit Bulls when it was originally about irresponsible dog owners and a disaster waiting to happen.

But while we're off topic, I absolutely agree with Amstaffer that the Pit Bull is lumped together with many other breeds. Many of which ARE bred to display aggression towards humans. I've seen people call Cane Corso and American Bulldogs "Pit Bulls".

Having a breed that has been, and is still, under the gun so to speak, I take great offense when people *often times uneducated about pits and rotties* proceed to tell me that my Rottweiler is more likely to bite someone than their , oh say, Lab!
There is absolutely no scientific evidence that proves one breed of dog is more inherently vicious than another. NONE.

As far as I'm concerned, all the media does is perpetuate public hysteria and add fuel to the BSL and ANTI DOG LAW FIRE!

My Grandmother had a saying "Don't believe everything you read, and only half of what you hear and see"....

Normally, I accept that threads go where they will, but this time I'm a little ticked off. I didn't mention the breed of the dog in the OP, I didn't bring the breed into it, because I didn't want another debate, I didn't want to make it about that. I've had that argument elsewhere, with various people.

chrotties, miakoda - you're now joining the illustrious ranks of people I'll never respond to again. It is unspeakably rude to pick a fight with someone in a thread about a deeply unhappy topic based only on what you've learned in other threads. It's akin to needling someone about their feeding Iams when they post that their dog has cancer. People like you make a very bad argument for pit bulls.

You have "dogs", which is nice, I guess, but I'm interested in breaking that down just a little bit more then that.
Heres a breakdown. This is from the Dog Legislation Coucil of Canada. Enjoy the read.

It is truly unfortunate that some people get their information from news reports and believes the mythology perpetrated by main stream media. The same source that fed the government information which let them to legislate dog owners into second-class status in the province of Ontario, because of their appearance when walking the family dog. Many MPPs spoke eloquently against the ban. There was an overwhelming majority of people who presented at the Committee hearings in January and February 2005. An overwhelming majority of those who came forward (most experts in the field) opposed the ban and offered constructive solutions to the problem of dangerous dog owners. The handful of people who spoke in favor of the ban were invited and paid by the Liberals. So there's a question for you: who finds this type of legislation favorable?

How about this statement? 'But I actually believe in it because people are getting mauled and killed by pit bulls'. 'Believe in it', as in 'believe in fairies? Believe in the party line? Believe in whatever the government tells me? This is a rather odd choice of words.

'…because people are getting mauled and killed by pit bulls'. Are they? Is there a reference, a statistical compilation, any hard evidence at all for this statement, or is it really true that media people use other media people as sources these days?

How about this statement? ‘ But they are bred to be aggressive’. Are they? Aggression is a learned behavior. Where is the scientific evidence to support dogs can be bred to be aggressive. If learned behavior was genetic we would be breeding dogs to heel! Certainly dogs can be bred to inherit tendencies toward specific actions such as herding dogs, however not all Border Collies are born to herd are they?

The implication here is more sinister - it is that there has been an epidemic of people dying from dog attacks, which is so far from the truth as to constitute an outright falsehood. On average, one person a year is killed by a dog in Canada. Your chance of being killed by a dog is roughly 1 : 16,000,000. The same cannot be said for motor vehicles, knives, friends and family, in fact, even lightning is more dangerous to your life than dogs are. You are more likely to win the lottery than to be killed by a dog. It never fails to astound me that people actually think that because there is a propaganda campaign, it must be true. History proves that time and time again, if something is repeated often enough the public will accept it, no matter how outlandish the statement is and how much it may contradict their own personal experience.

The reason you think 'pit bulls' are dangerous is because that is what is reported. Almost no other incidents involving dogs merit more than localized coverage in the media but if a so-called 'pit bull' chases a cat it is front page news and receives national coverage. It give a very distorted picture of what is actually happening, creating sensationalism, which of course sells more newspapers and allows media outlets to increase their advertising revenue. That's really all it is, and I'm surprised that you seem unaware of it.

For your information, here is a record of all verified deaths by dogs in Canada from 1983 - 2003 (source: Canadian government):

2003 (3) Rottweilers Boy wandered into yard (NB)
2003 (4) German Shep Xs Grandmother's dogs (MB)

Most of these cases are sordid, and they are certainly not representative of dog owners as a whole. The table is a bit out of date, as it does not mention the three deaths since 2003 all of which have been children on reserves in the northern prairies by feral dogs running loose.

You may also be interested in this list of dog attacks (2004 - April 2006), compiled by an authority on the subject. This list is put together from news reports, not the best source for information, but I'd like to share it with you anyway (highlighting indicates an incident in Ontario):

1.April 25, 2006, a toddler will be scarred for life after a savage attack by the family's Labrador Retriever/Kelpie cross. The child was left unsupervised with the dog.

2.April 25, 2006, a young girl was bitten in the face by an at-large Labrador Retriever mix her mother inexplicably allowed her to hug. (Always avoid unsupervised dogs.)

3.April 24, 2006, an elderly Toronto woman suffered several bite wounds when she was bitten by a German Shepherd being cared for by a neighbor.

4.April 24, 2006, a girl was mauled by the family's Alaskan Malamute. (The report lists the dog as an "Alaskan Husky", but no such breed exists. It could be either a Siberian Husky, or an Alaskan Malamute. After obtaining a photograph of the dog, it is clearly an Alaskan Malamute.) The dog had attacked a child previously.

5.April 24, 2006, a jogger alleges she was bitten by one of several dogs purposefully released from the owner's kennel. According to both the victim and the owner of the dogs, the bite was inflicted by either a Siberian Husky or a Husky/wolf cross.

6.April 22, 2006, a 6-year-old boy was attacked by a German Shepherd while playing tag with friends. The boy's mother points out that her boyfriend's 'pit bull', for example, is a very friendly dog, and the responsibility lies with the owner of any dog, whatever its breed, to prevent attacks by properly raising and supervising it.

7.April 20, 2006, a 'pit bull' was viciously attacked by a Pomeranian while out on a walk with its owner. The owner of the Pomeranian will face several charges.

8.April 15, 2006, a York Region boy was mauled by a neighbor’s Labrador Retriever mix, after it escaped its cage and attacked the boy while playing in his driveway.

9.April 15, 2006, a man in York Region was badly mauled by a Tibetan Mastiff.

10.April 14, 2006, a couple has been ordered to remove at least half their 9 or more Border Collies, after numerous biting incidents.

11.April 13, 2006, a child was attacked by a neighbor’s German Shepherd mix while playing in her own yard with the dog owner's children. The dog broke away from the owner, jumped the fence, and attacked the girl. Authorities wondered "what made the dog snap?"
12.April 12, 2006, a child was seriously bitten by the family's Chow/Rottweiler mix they keep as a "guard dog". The dog has a history of aggressive behavior.
13.April 11, 2006, a 4-year-old needed over 200 stitches to close wounds caused in an attack by a German Shepherd. The dog was chained to a pole in a public park, and the child went too near the dog and was attacked.

20.April 7, 2006, a 3-year-old was left with multiple bites and facial fractures after being mauled by the family's German Shepherd.
21.April 6, 2006, a woman was bitten, and suffered wounds to her hand, arm, and cheek, when a Boston Terrier left its property and attacked the dogs she was walking on-leash. The Boston Terrier was only confined via an 'invisible fence' and accompanying electric shock collar. Clearly, it didn't keep the dog in the yard.
22.April 6, 2006, a woman suffered severe bites to her face when she tried to shield her child from an attack by an American Bulldog.
23.April 5, 2006, a number of children were bitten when an off-duty police dog escaped its enclosure and attacked them.
24.April 5, 2006, a police officer was dragged to the ground and attacked by a "furry, tan dog" chained on the owner's property. (No other description was given.)
25.April 5, 2006, a rare kind of wild deer was attacked by 2 Collies.
26.April 3, 2006, a woman's Bulldog was bitten by an at-large Golden Retriever that ran across the street and attacked unprovoked. The girl in charge of the dog just watched.
27.April 3, 2006, a white "wolf-type" dog (possibly a Husky or Malamute cross) bit an animal control worker, and attempted to bite the police officer called to investigate. After the dog lunged at the officer, he shot it. The dog continued to threaten the officer, and was shot 2 more times.

31.April 2, 2006, a boy was bitten on the back and may have a dislocated shoulder as the result of an attack by a Mastiff cross dog. The dog's owner was also bitten.
32.April 2, 2006, a German Shepherd caused several bites to the owner's grown daughter when she tried to return the dog to the property, after it escaped.
33.April 2, 2006, Bearded Collie bites rescuer trying to save it on cliff. Dog runs off.
34.April 1, 2006, a child was bitten in the face by the family dog (no breed was given, and authorities emphasized this was "not an aggressive dog" - We wonder what they'd have said if it had been the family's 'pit bull'...). Firefighters had to use a ladder to rescue the child and his babysitter from an upstairs bathroom, as they were too afraid of the so-called "non-aggressive" dog to go near it after the attack.
35.April 2006, a farmer shot an at-large Siberian Husky on his property after it reportedly bit him and his dog.

36.March 30, 2006, a Toronto police officer was forced to shoot an aggressive, at-large dog, a Border Collie/Australian Shepherd cross, after responding to a call the dog had attacked a 75-year-old woman and two teens. While assisting the badly-injured senior, the officer was also bitten; totalling four bite victims for this one dog. Ontario's "'pit bull' ban" does nothing to prevent incidents like this.
37.March 30, 2006, Waterloo regional police shot and killed an aggressive dog described as a black, mixed-breed, after it reportedly bit someone. This region has a ban on 'pit bulls', but that has not reduced dog bites, nor has it prevented incidents such as this.
38.March 29, 2006, a 6-year-old girl was mauled when she was allowed unsupervised access to the yard of a chained Labrador Retriever known to be aggressive.
39.March 28, 2006, a 5-year-old was mauled to death by two mixed-breed dogs that escaped their yard while unsupervised. Authorities described the dogs as "mixed breeds, smaller and not as vicious as 'pit bulls'." The boy's throat was torn out.
40.March 27, 2006, a 76-year-old woman was viciously attacked by two at-large Boxers. The dogs were known to be aggressive and frequently at-large.
41.March 27, 2006, an 11-year-old boy was bitten by the family's Great Dane while "wrestling with the dog and growling at it."
42.Commerce Insurance Company includes Yorkshire Terriers in its list of dog breeds considered too dangerous and an "unacceptable risk" when writing homeowners' policies.
43.March 27, 2006, a 6-year-old was bitten by the family's American Bulldog during the process of chaining the dog in the yard.
44.March 26, 2006, a Port Colborne cyclist was bitten by a dog as he rode by the owners and their unleashed dog, described by the victim as "like an Irish Wolfhound". (We can't resist pointing out that the victim also said the dog was "3 1/2 feet tall." If so, it almost ties the tallest dog ever to have lived; a Great Dane that was 42.5". Dogs are measured at the shoulder.)
45.March 25, 2006, a man is going to court to fight a city order to keep his admittedly "dangerous" "guard dogs" inside his house, rather than in a cage in his yard. The order was issued after the dogs, a Boxer mix and a Lab mix the owner keeps specifically for guard duties, repeatedly escaped their cage and menaced neighbours, including biting a man in 2004.
46.March 24, 2006, an infant was attacked by a Husky/Chow mix at a private residence.
47.March 24, 2006, an elderly man was killed by his son's 3 Boerboels, after a history of beating the dogs.
48.A 14-month-old was bitten seven times by another child on her first day of day care. Staff admit children bite each other frequently. (Note: As many Americans are treated in hospital for bites caused by other humans, as by dogs.)
49.March 22, 2006, an OPP officer was bitten by a Labrador Retriever after answering a call about an at-large dog.
50.March 21, 2006, a shelter worker was attacked by a Mastiff mix which left bite wounds to the forehead, thigh, and shoulder. The woman had to be airlifted for treatment.

59.After days of searching for more information about a dog attack that left a boy with bite wounds to the face and a possible broken nose, a reader directed us to a news story (March 17, 2006) attributing the attack to a friend's Corgi, and not one of the owner's multiple 'pit bulls'. According to the victim, he's lived with 'pit bulls' his whole life "without so much as a scratch."
60.March 16, 2006 a woman has been ordered to pay a fine for harboring a dangerous dog, after it bit a letter carrier. The incident has halted mail service to everyone in the community, as the court has not ordered anything that can assure the postal service there won't be a repeat incident with the Alsatian (German Shepherd Dog). Since December 31, 2005, residents of that neighborhood have had to retrieve their mail from a sorting station. Until the postal service is assured the dog is either under control or has been removed, it will continue to halt mail delivery, a spokesperson said.
61.March 14, 2006, 2 New Orleans police officers bitten by a police dog during a chase.

He was simply "warned" after neighbor reports of his dogs roaming and behaving aggressively. (Yep...priorities in order there...)
65.March 13, 2006, a Chow attacked a woman's dog in her own yard. The Chow has previously been reported for aggression.
66.March 11, 2006, a woman was viciously attacked by the Labrador Retriever she had just adopted. The dog tore her lip and part of her cheek away. She will need plastic surgery to repair the damage. She believes the dog had been abused in the past.

75.March 7, 2006, a police officer shot a Ridgeback mix dog after it attacked another dog and menaced the officer. There was a brief report in the media, in which the owner-confirmed “Ridgeback mix” was described as a “pit bull look-alike”. (Good grief!!!)
76.March 6, 2006, a man and woman were sent to hospital after being attacked by their German Shepherd Dog.
77.A police dog attacked a resident of Stone Ridge; the fourth such incident this year, nationwide in the U.S. According to Sgt. Trent Crump, who heads the Phoenix Police Department's K-9 division, "A dog can only do what you allow it to do," he said. "It is up to the handler and handler control." (That's all experts have been trying to get across for years!)
78.March 5, 2006, a 6-year-old boy was attacked by two dogs, and found unconscious and hypothermic outside the residence. The father identified 2 brown dogs as the ones who attacked his son. Both dogs have been euthanized. The owner of the German Shepherd mix surrendered the dog, admitting it was aggressive.
79.March 4, 2006, two Labrador Retriever mixes killed a chained Pomeranian, then attacked a ‘pit bull’, during a neighbourhood wide rampage in Port Colborne, Ontario. Ok I am done. There is more but I dont think I need to go any further with it.

As you can see, there is a mix of DIFFERENT BREEDS. Not just one specifically or a majority.

The one thing they have in common.........bad owners.

I just don't understand why you are telling us this, Bullied. What's the point? We all live with dogs, of course we know any dog can bite.

By posting statistics like this all you are doing is fueling more BSL or anti-dog legislation. Why would you cut off your nose to spite your face? Just because Pit Bulls face discrimination you want every breed's neck on the line? I think it's horrible that people are so brainwashed and I would be absolutely seething if this was my breed, but I wouldn't send in dozens of reports of other breeds attacking. That's just opening the door for even more stupid freaking laws.

From an objective point of view, it'd be more helpful to send in reports of Pit Bulls doing good things. Bahamutt's Loki seems to be a great agility dog, a lot of Pit Bulls are therapy dogs, some are search and rescue dogs, service dogs, etc. That is what will change the public's opinion on them. Telling people how vicious OTHER dog breeds can be will do nothing for their view on Pit Bulls - except now they'll hate Labs, GSDs and Huskies too.

If there's a moderator out there, could they shut this thread down? For fairly obvious reasons I hate seeing this particular thread become a passionate rant about how wonderful pit bulls are. Perhaps people who wish to continue this could slip over to the cunningly titled "Speaking of train wrecks" gigglea about someone's messy living room and hijack that thread.

They are FACTS. That is why I posted them. Not just one or two breeds involved but many. It seems to me telling people the good most of the times does not work. Proving to them that it is ANY dogs in the hands of the wrong people works.

Not to be rude, but maybe if it were other peoples breeds involved in this there would be more being done to change it.

Unfortunately we can't lie and tell everyone that attacks DO NOT occur. They do. You and I and everyone else here knows it.

I think it is extremely funny that you never said "now people will hate Pomeranians too". It's stupid that people always direct their attention to the big dogs.

Not only that but you are not in my shoes. I know you can say that you understand what Bully owners have to put up with, but until it is YOUR dog being targeted by BSL or anti-breed legislation you don't have a clue.

And to be quite honest, YES, I think that if "Pit Bulls" have to face discrimination, then everyone elses breed should too. Not saying that it is fair to discriminate against all dogs, because it is not, but then it is not fair to discriminate against just a few breeds either.

This is the point I am trying to make with this. Its not just "Pit Bulls" or German Shepherds or Pomeranians. Its every breed, that is owned or neglected by an irresponsible person.

Lieing about the truth does NOTHING for anyone. I would just be like the media then wouldn't I???

I would also like to point out the fact that there was a yorkshire terrier in there and a CHILD that bit another child.

OMG now I am going to have people with children mad at me for bringing up the fact that children can bite.

I know this thread will be gone soon, but I just wanted to mention, I think I've seen Casa post about the dog that attacked his/her Bearded Collie, and it wasn't a Pit Bull. Labrador? *Knocks on head.* Can't remember.
