I am not certain heat would be right yet...i would ask. I think the first 24 hours are ice rest and elevate to reduce swelling and pain. Heat comes later.

Fractures (broken bones): First aid - MayoClinic.com

A fracture is a broken bone. It requires medical attention. If the broken bone is the result of major trauma or injury, call 911 or your local emergency number. Also call for emergency help if:

* The person is unresponsive, isn't breathing or isn't moving. Begin cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) if there's no respiration or heartbeat.
* There is heavy bleeding.
* Even gentle pressure or movement causes pain.
* The limb or joint appears deformed.
* The bone has pierced the skin.
* The extremity of the injured arm or leg, such as a toe or finger, is numb or bluish at the tip.
* You suspect a bone is broken in the neck, head or back.
* You suspect a bone is broken in the hip, pelvis or upper leg (for example, the leg and foot turn outward abnormally).

Take these actions immediately while waiting for medical help:

* Stop any bleeding. Apply pressure to the wound with a sterile bandage, a clean cloth or a clean piece of clothing.
* Immobilize the injured area. Don't try to realign the bone, but if you've been trained in how to splint and professional help isn't readily available, apply a splint to the area.
* Apply ice packs to limit swelling and help relieve pain until emergency personnel arrive. Don't apply ice directly to the skin — wrap the ice in a towel, piece of cloth or some other material.
*

------------------------------------------------------

IT is 10 on 10-15 off right after surgery..I don't know what it is for a broken or fractured bone. You don't want it on too long to do tissue damage.

ANd it may not be broken and just badly bruised but the ice would help the pain and swelling either way.

So... Brian comes home from work. Belle had just been outside to do her business. he came in and she was very happy to see him... walked right over to him... NO LIMP. WTF lol. The limp seems to come and go and sometimes it's worse then others. seems once she has been up on it for a few minutes it gets better but after she's been laying down it seems to stiffen up on her or something

I figured out where the pain is.

it's the inner toe on her right foot. I just held her foot and wiggled each toe gently from the outside working my way to the inside and she was fine with each one then when I got to the inside toe she winced and pulled away.... and now that I know that I can see it when she walks that she is putting all her pressure on the outside of her foot.

I was wondering if it might be a toe. THat is what VIctor did. HE got his climbing a tree after a squirrel and went too high. twisted and came down wrong. Hope yours is a sprain, and not what he did. IT took a bit of fun away for both of us. HE use to love to twist like a tornado and jump after bubbles and i liked watching him do it. It's in the pivot that gets him in trouble. HE does not climb trees anymore by his own reasoning and I am grateful.

So Belle has a poor piddy paw.:( THat's sad. Wonder what she did.

She could have done anything...caught it on a door, a stick, it could be a bruise even if she stepped on a rock or something. Poor baby girl. I don't know what the vet can do for a toe, but good luck tomorrow.

yeah that's what I was wondering too... what can be done for a toe?

The nice thing is Belle is not SUPER active. she doesn't do any jumping or twisting or anything. I'm guessing she probably either stepped on something or hurt it when trying to stop herself in full running mode

I've read online that some vets put a dog in a full leg cast for a broken toe, even when it wasn't a weight bearing toe  Then others just give pain meds, order leash walks and rest for weeks.

I hope the appointment goes well and whatever it is will soon be over for her.

Jake broke his toe and he was in a full leg cast for 4-6 weeks.

He did the same thing as Belle. Sometimes he would put weight on it, sometimes he woudn't. Then about a day later it swelled up big time, so we took him in and sure enough, it was broken.

It is pretty swollen. I don't know if it's broken but it's obviously very sore. I do hope this vet will be willing to work out a payment plan if this gets pricey. We've been with them a long time so I'd like to think they would work with us on this. I hope she doesn't need a full cast that will make her miserable I'm sure but we will do whatever needs to be done.

Fingers crossed that it's not a break! Poor girl, I hope she feels better soon... I know I would be a mess if Morgan started limping around.

((((((HUGS)))))) for Belle AND Sparks!

We're back. GOOD NEWS. no breaks or fractures :) so it's just a nasty sprain. The doctor gave me some anti inflammatories for her (rimadyl) to help with the pain and swelling and other wise she just needs to rest it. right now she's curled up on the couch resting. But she was loving the vets lol everyone was giving her all kinds of attention.

So with some R&R she will be good as new in no time :)
