So out of mild curiosity what exactly does your office fee often cover when you visit your vet?

It's about time that we need to go for HW testing.. But I'm cranky because it's a 60 dollar office visit.. 22 to draw my pets blood (they collapsed three veins and got testy with me about it being Cider's fault last time..) and another 25 or so to do the HW test.. So about 107 plus tax to get a HW test.. and then were going to order our on meds this year after seeing what they were overcharging by..

Last 3 office visits we had that 60 didn't seem to cover anything at all really.. Yes it's there time etc.. but when you get hosed 60 + 35 to do an anal gland expression.. and that is ALL you went in for.. It starts to get to the point where I see why people are testy at going..

Just to see the vet at our place is $49. Anything else.. meds, what they do, is extra. It really depends on where you live, I believe.

I took Chyna in today.
HW test was $23.00
Distemper combo was $26.75
Plus I got a $5.00 discount.
So total was $44.75.

I have to agree, it definitely depends on where you live. I live in a college town, with its own college of veterinary medicine, and take my dogs to a vet in another town because the vets here are realy expensive, especially the college vets.

When I lived up by my parents in rural nothern Iowa, it wasn't unusual for the same vet visitI just mentioned to be around $40 without a discount.

Our vet charges $40 for an office visit. I'm not sure how much all of the tests are separately, but it is $115 for a HW test, fecal, and annual vaccines if needed.

Holy cow!

If all you wanted was a heartworm test done & nothing else, it's $15. That includes drawing the blood, preparing & examining a slide to check for microfliaria, & for running the snap test (& we use the 3 way test that check for heartworms, erlichia, & lyme disease at no extra charge to you because we are involved in a regional case study on these 2 diseases).

For an annual visit & checkup, it is $60 for an intact dog & $55 for an altered one. This includes:
-Heartworm check
-Fecal check
-Rabies vaccine & tag
-8in1 vaccine
-Check ears & eyes
-Allover physical exam to check for lumps & bumps & anything else of that nature.
We also get a weight & temperature on the dog every single visit.

We don't charge an actual exam fee if you are getting your dog vaccinated, having a heartworm check done, having anal glands expressed, or getting the nails cut. For everything else, the exam fees range from $12, $16, & $20 depending on whether it's a lengthy detailed visit or not.

$38.50 for an exam/basic visit
$20 for the heartworm test.

If they were giving me attitude like that, I'd tell them if they keep it up I'll be finding another vet.

I'm looking for a new one. When I thought Cider had Lyme.. It turned out no one had snap tests.. and No one supported the AAHA's 3 year vacc protocol..

They all gave me attitude for calling an asking, so I'm fearful to start calling about what a HW test will really cost with all hidden fees, but I need to really get at it..

My clinic is located in Baton Rouge, LA. :) We are the second largest in the state behind LSU Vet School's clinic. We have 8 vets, 20 techs, 3 assistants, & 2 office managers at present time. We have over 60,000 active clients & over 95,000 inactive clients. Cool, huh?

We have 8 exam rooms, 1 emergency/trauma room, 2 sterile surgery rooms, a large "dirty" surgery room where the surgery patients are held ("dirty" surgery refers to procedures such as dentals, wound cleaning, etc. that don't require a sterile environment to carry out ;) ), a cat ward/room, 2 dog wards, a parvo ward, & small distemper & anything else contagious ward, a bath area, & an x-ray room.

We have our own CBC & Complete Profile machines & thankfully get to run those bloodtests ourselves without having to send them out (only takes about 20 minutes). We use snap tests to test for heartworms, parvovirus, FeLuk/FIV & even have a few for giardia on hand every now & then (although they are notorious for false negatives).

We usually have 3-4 vets working the rooms/seeing patients at all time & each vet has their own tech. We always have a vet doing surgery throughout the day as well. We have a separate lab tech & treatment tech (who oversees the animals & is in charge of fluids, meds, etc) that do just their jobs. And then we have 3 techs that are working the front desk answering phones, checking clients in & out, & bringing surgery animals back. We also have 1 tech in surgery as well. And that's a typical day.

Since our hours are from 8 am to 7 pm, we work in 2 shifts. The morning shift is there from 6:30 am to about 3 pm & the afternoon shift is there from 2pm until everything is done at night which can be anywhere from 8 pm to midnight.

& just for those germophobic people, we are closed from noon until 2 pm to take care of animals & disinfect the ENTIRE clinic with bleach. We mop the entire 9,000 sq ft. place with bleach & a parvo disinfectent, we bleach all tables & every surface including chairs & doors.......everything gets bleached (including ourselves ;) ). And then this is repeated at night before everyone leaves.

Ok, that's enough for now as y'all get the point. Although right now I'm staying at home with my son (9 months old), I still go in every now & then to do some surgeries or work in the lab. It's a nice break from babyworld.

I sucked it up and I started calling...
I have an appt monday.. 40 for just a hw test nothing else...

My own vet was 58 bucks to test, and the lady then was like well.. she probably needs a consult even though you are a client.. and that's now 62 and change......

So even more at my own vet than I initially worked it out too. HOT...

i need to get sylvie in to the vet. i'm trying to get her vet records from her previous owner and i think i know which vet they took her to, so i am just going to contect the vet and see if she's on record.
i would rather just take her literally down the street to the vet here, rather than traipse all the way across town. i don't know who is the best vet in town because most of my friends with pets rarely have things go wrong...

For maintenance/preventative vet care I take mine to a SNAP Wellness clinic (snapus.org). $15 office fee, $20 HW test, $10 rabies, $30 microchip, etc. That place is awesome for those kinds of things but they are not a full service clinic.

SNAP = Spay/Neuter Assistance Program.

Also -- check out your local humane society. One in my area (houstonhumane.org) offers low cost HW test, vaccinations, etc.

Our Lilly just went it for her rabies shot. We recently switched vets, so this was the new vets first chance to evaluate her tumor. We talked about her options at length and decided to wait and see. Grand total $12. As opposed to our last vet, where we never left paying less than $50. Lilly did leave him a rather large "gift" on the exam room floor. She then gave him a look like "Thats right bud, thats for you". Naughty little thing :lol-sign:

My vet charges $38.00 for a exam

If you are in for shots... there is no office visit fee, just $10.00 a shot and you get a exam with it.

I'm not sure about heartworm because it's isn't a big thing here.

Today Marq got a physical and my mom got two small(2 inch tall) bottles of ear infection medication for our oldest dog all for roughly $39.
