We are on very good friendly terms with our vet, and she is always giving us discounts.

For Shooter & Pearl to both go in at the same time, Pearl to get her 2nd round of puppy shots and Shooter to get kennel cough update vacc, after a $7.55 discount, the total was $67.97.

Gotta love a vet that doesnt price you for almost jack!

A lot of ya'll seem like you're getting overcharged.

We charge $71 for a full annual check up. This is for the exam, vaccinations, fecal, heartworm test, everything. We'll even clip their nails and express their glands if you ask us to.

Our exam fees are expensive, $31, but we don't charge for followup exams if you need to come back for an ongoing problem (like a healing wound or something like that).

Vaccinations are generally $15 if you get them seperately from the annual package. Heartworm test is $20. Fecal is $12. A large part of our visits are just getting the animals annual check up. If you need just a shot or a fecal (you have to have an exam for a heartworm test since the vet has to interpret the results and talk to the owner if it comes up positive) then our lab tech covers that and it'll just cost you whatever that particular procedure costs.

The first vet my sister went to, however, wasn't quite like that. You had to pay a $10 office fee. Every time. Even if you just wanted to get their nails clipped, it was $10 plus the fee for the procedure (which I think was another $10).

Some vet clinics are just ridiculous with their pricing.

I like the idea of giving owners with fixed animals a discount though. I'm gonna have to propose that to my vet and see what she thinks.

The $5 dollar discount that altered animals get on rabies vaccines/tags and/or a full annual, is actually one instituted by they parishes animal control. They charge $10 for a rabies tag (which is registered with the parish) for an intact animal & $5 for an altered one. But IMO $5 can buy me lunch!

And I agree about vet clinics. However, know that a small private practice run by a single vet is going to be much more pricier than a larger clinic with 5 or more vets. That's because that single vet cannot possibly see as many patients in a day & cannot see patients at all while having to take time out to do surgeries. Thus you will pay more for all procedures & exam fees.

I know of one private practice in which the vet charges $22 for a fecal. We charge $8. I mean, all you are doing is lubing up a fecal loop, getting a sample from the dog, preparing 2 slides (a direct & a float), & then checking them. It's easy as pie & shouldn't cost more than $10 IMO. A nail trim is $7, a skin scrape is $10, & anal gland expression is $10.

And like glassonion, we don't charge fees for follow up visits like those after a surgery or to check a splint or whatnot.
