Why does it even matter what race one is, when applying to college. That itself IMO has an edge of racism. :(
I just finished applying to about 10 colleges, all that mattered were my grades and anything else I had to offer, not what race I am. My race wasn't even asked. Why can't they just take it off the applications and illiminate the quota?
I'm not sure, really. You are not required to put your race, but it IS asked, and you do get a definite benefit from being a minority. It helps a lot of people, but it does hurt others, especially in certain schools with a larger minority populations.

I always put "other" or something to that effect

they don't really have a "mixed race" option..which is odd really. I wish I could just circle 2 lol sure would make my life easier

If I really wanted to reap in the benefits of something, I would be going to the ivy league school where my father attended. God knows I could probably get myself in. but I don't. because I don't want to get into a school because of my last name.
and because I think grade standards and stuff like that is there for a reason. I wouldn't do well in a school like that lol id probably have a nervous breakdown

Its not that I don't use connections.. I do. to get myself THINGS. Movie premier tickets, sports games tickets, some new toy (purse, phone, video game etc..) but those are THINGS. nothing as important as a college acceptance..
By getting a thing, im not stealing anything away from anyone..
but accepting acceptance to a school that I don't deserve, im taking a spot from someone who probably worked REALLY HARD to have what was needed to get in.
and no, I don't agree with quotas. take me for who I am. my grades, essay, interview, my 3rd grade district spelling bee CHAMPION title even lol but not something that I didn't earn..

Both my brothers went Ivy league, I do not. I'll be attending NYU next semester :) Im very proud of myself, it might not be THAT prestigious, but I love the school, and I got in on my own.

If anything, if he learned ANYTHING from this experience. I hope its to watch your mouth and think before you speak. you have NO IDEA who you could be talking to.

wasn't there a case a while ago about a girl from south africa that applied to some university and then they gave her a hard time about saying she was from south africa because they expected her to be black and she was actually white... like she was trying to TRICK them into thinking she was black by saying she was from south africa.

ridiculous

sparks, i think he/she got a scholarship and had checked african or african american or whatever because he/she IS african and then they wanted to not give him/her the scholarship. i don't know the whole story, but i remember that happening.

There is NO biological basis for race. It is purely a social construct and differs depending on the country you are in and we try to justify it as natural and biological, and it's just not

Fran, NYU is an impressive school. Granted a lot of kids there are there because of who their parents are or the money they have but if you're there honestly, it IS prestigious. I don't know if I'd get into NYU if applied...I probably would but I wouldn't bank on it.

Also, so that means you'll be living in NYC come fall? Want to get together some time?

Just remember that it isn't only about skin color, it is also about illness, and old age and all of the dressings that make up our package. I take my mother to the doctor and people assume because she is 86 that she is feeble minded and deaf. Nothing could be further from the truth. IT infuriates her that they look to ME and tell me what they should be telling her. IF that starts, I just turn around and walk out the door.

People look at me with my thinness and my lesions and assume I am a crack addict. It cane happen for different reasons than crack is all I can tell them. It still makes me feel bad. People are people and should be treated as such no matter what they present on the outside.

I am glad your Father did nothing. I am a firm believer in Kharma even if it takes years for it to come around.
