So are you in the tiny portion of NC that the white path covers? I don't understand how to read the map. Is the white the width of the hurricane, or is it that the center of the storm could be anywhere inside the white portion?

I've been reading things that say even here in DC we may get it, but I look at the projected map and it isn't coming anywhere close to DC, so I don't understand it at all.

Stay safe!!!

We are the southern portion that its headed to BEFORE the curve but RARELY curve that sharp at the size and intensity it is.

Thats what happened with Charley they said it was going to curve and hit us. It didnt and it decemated the area south of us that it hit and they werent prepared for it.

We are now under a Tropical Storm watch along with the county north of us but the one above it is under a Hurricane watch. (its only MAYBE a hour drive to Onslow county)
Which means most likely the Tropical Storm that hits will be a BAD TS and just short of a cane. IF it stays the path which we still arent convinced it will. They NEVER stick to those paths that close to the shore.

Darn, they've ordered mandatory evacuations for Carteret County - that's where most of my relatives live. My 93 yr. old aunt is dependent on one of her sons for transportation - I hope he doesn't decide to ride it out...

We are only suppossed to get slight Tropical Storm force winds.

Try calling the PD they will tell you someone who can help her. I know they arent letting people stay in the outer banks, shutting everything down and cops going door to door.

Well, it sounds like you've got a good plan. Yeah, it's better safe than sorry. I hope everyone will be okay. I hope you don't lose your house. But better that than human life. Stay safe and good vibes coming your way. It sounds pretty scary.

Weve decided to stay afterall. Theres a less then 5% chance it will hit here directly and a tropical storm is nothing. Little rain, little wind, may lose power but we will live. We are still packed and have our reservations but I doubt Ill keep them. We are boarding up tomorrow and tomorrow night will be a fun night (not) of me stuck home with 3 kids and 3 dogs not allowed to live and probably in one room.

We lived in Carteret County for a few years.
In Broad Creek on the mainland, across from Bogue Island. Most of them live either on the Sound waterfront or within a couple blocks of it. Hoping the island will block most of it...

Well its suppossed to hit tonight the wind is picking up having some light showers. Got our yard cleaned up and our stuff moved out of windows and things covered and everything. Landlord didnt want to board so we just taped and hope for the best. Our neighbors on the other hand are sitting in their yard drinking while all their yard stuff is strewn about which is my main reason for wanting to board.

Shouldnt get to bad here. I have my cell phone, and netbook. The CPU is going to get put in a closet just in case.

We are staying to ride it out.

Stay safe!! Hopefully it won't get to bad for you. For the record, I have just realized how horribly prepared we are for this years hurricane season.

Oh, I just saw a picture of The Outer Banks evacuation traffic... YIKES!

My folks got caught on the island one year during a hurricane; their house was probably a good 8 miles from the closest bridge and traffic was backed up past the middle of the island (Bogue Island is approx. 21 miles long). They opted to stay at the house. My dad's sister and husband were staying further up the beach - took them 4 hours to drive 2-1/2 miles. They wound up staying with my folks.

Dad said it was just stupidity - authorities opened both lanes (it's a 2 lane highway) for exiting the island but didn't turn off the traffic lights on the mainland at the first intersection, so traffic backed up as the signal went through its usual cycle.
