I guess I was most concerned with driving a long way by myself essentially as I've never done that before.
I'm much more comfortable driving like that with my dog in the car vs being along. I don't really have a good answer for why- emotional support, I guess :)

It was a ten hour or so drive to Indiana for the CanAm flyball tournament back in October. Steve just slept in his crate pretty much the whole way. I walked him and offered him water when we stopped for gas/bathroom breaks. He was such a good boy.

I do 11 hour trips from NC to IN regularly to visit family, often with 2+ dogs with me. I tend to stop at major exits - i.e. lots of fast food/gas places on the signs before the exit - (and major rest stops unless I need gas or food) and have never had an issue, tho some of the grassy areas can be kinda gross.

On my 11 hour trip we have a dog park about 2/3 of the way to our destination in both directions that I stop at to let the dogs blow off some steam before getting to our destination and that really helps them be calmer when we finally get there.

Would you fly with him?

I haven't done a big driving trip with my dogs but I did fly one to another state a few months ago for a training weekend. It was heaps of fun!

Pretty sure I'd rather drive a long distance than fly. lol. He's not one to be in a crate, and I think it'd be more stress (plus more $$$) for both me and him, especially by myself. If I was able to walk him thru airport on leash, and have him in the seat next to me or on my lap or whatever, he'd be fine. But I just don't think he'd ever do the being carried around in a crate and being shoved under a seat thing and I'd probably only do it if it were really necessary, ya know? I wouldn't be opposed to flying with him if I had to, but if it's just for a vacation... it'd be easier to leave him at home with my dad.

Fair enough, I was thinking about doing a similar length drive recently because there are a lot of positives about being able to have your car with you on a trip especially when you have your dog with you, but then flying is just so much quicker LOL.

Do you get to bring your dog on the airplane with you in the US? My dog flew in the cargo hold, she's the only one of mine I'd be really happy to fly though as she's not a stressy or anxious dog so I knew she'd be fine.

ETA: I walked my dog through the airport on leash, luckily I didn't have to put her in the crate until I sent her off to board the plane.

Little dogs can fit under your seat. I think different airlines have different weight/height restrictions, but yeah, if they are small enough they can fit under your seat. :)

Yup quite a bit. Been all over MI with him, down to KY and back, IN and back, and WI and back. I make more pit stops for me (especially the WI trip) than I do for him. I make sure I have a variety of music and someone to call and talk to.

Yes! I do all the time. I have friends in San Diego and San Francisco that I visit frequently. We usually put the dogs in their crates in the back and they do just fine. When we stop for gas they have a potty break and water and when we stop for lunch they usually have their lunch too. It's much easier traveling with dogs than a toddler :D I know you said, your friends aren't dog people but know your dog is well behaved etc... but I would ask just in case. I see it as out of respect for your host's, even if they don't mind at least you were respectful and asked ;) Also, take lots of pics on your travels!

Oh, no, I would def be asking! lol. Wouldn't bring him as a surprise. But was just saying I'm making all this planning and haven't even asked them yet, haha... but yeah, I would never just bring him before asking.

The trip shouldn't be bad, I've done the same one to visit my parents in Myrtle Beach except I was coming from NY. I did have my sister with me, so I wasn't really alone. The dogs were excellent though. Pig was barely four months at the time, so I thought for sure we would have to stop constantly. But no, she spent the whole trip passed out.

Didn't read through this whole thread, sorry, but I wanted to chime in because I'm actually currently on a road trip with my dogs. :) The trip is 15 hours, from my house to my parents', and I've done it 5 Christmases in a row now. Luna's come with me every year, and Keegan's come too these last two years.

I love traveling with my dogs, it's definately better than going by yourself. As far as safety, that's definately something I'm always concerned about, as a young, single woman driving through sometimes questionably safe areas. But I actually feel a little safer with my dogs in the car. Even though I have a chihuahua and a collie, two breeds who aren't generally thought of as dangerous, they do act as a deterrent (I think) and I feel safer with them with me.

I stop and let them out every 2-3 hours (it tends to coincide with gas or meal breaks), they usually just toilet in grassy areas at our stops. Luna's perfectly comfortable sleeping in the car, and Keegan's still improving; so for the most part they just sleep the whole ride unless we stop and take a break. They're usually a little wound up when we get to our destination, so I have to be ready to let them out to exercise pretty much before I even say hello to my family.

I've only flown with a dog once, with Keegan when he was a baby and small enough to fit in the cabin under the seat. :D That was actually VERY stressful..... I find flying stressful in the first place, but when I have to take care of a dog as well as myself, well, it was hard. I think, though, that dogs are allowed out of their carriers in the airport.... They have to be inside until you get through security, and of course the whole time you're on the plane, but while you're in the terminal I'm pretty sure you can have them out. I didn't when I flew with Keegan, because I was rushing to get to my gate and didn't have time; but I did let him out when we got to baggage claim.

I'm travelling next week-end with my dog for the first time so I'm abit nervous how it will go. I might need a few tips on keeping my dog entertained. It's a 6 hour drive.

I've never travelled alone with the dogs (has always been with hubby), but we drive 11 hours every december with them. We're actually an hour into the trip right now. Everyone sleeps and I definitely feel safer having their companionship!

Oh man, road trips with dogs are the best! They are very stress relieving and make it fun, in my opinion. Well, for a dog who's used to traveling and being in a car, that is. Usually my trips with the dogs involve camping, but sometimes other dog events as well. Maddie's been to MI, PA, and VA with me :D and also all the states between here and FL but we barely stop through those lol

So, I have been to tons of places alone, but the most recent and longest trip was to FL (my Dad was with me though). We stopped for gas, and every time we stopped for gas I walked Maddie around until she went to the bathroom and offered water. Lots of people wanted to pet her at gas stations, my main concern was keeping her away from the pumps and possible spills, etc and the ground was really wet so she got pretty dirty and had to get a bath when we got to our destination...

For you and Jackson, because he's so well trained and socialized, it should be a breeze. I always back a dog duffle bag and keep it up front with me and handy. Always take a dog first aid kit, too. Just in case! ;)

I am so glad to hear so many positive experiences! And like I said, Jackson is already fairly well traveled and a very good traveler. :) So I am sure things would go smoothly. I do kind of wish I had someone to go with but I just don't have anyone who would really want to go hang out with these people because none of my close friends know them, and I wouldn't want to ask (they are like second grandparents to me) them to have more people in their house, LOL

I suppose if I found someone to go with, it would have to be more of a stay-in-a-hotel thing with friend and Jackson and go visit when we can.
