Pixie, that was interesting information on the Cocker. It may be possible he wasn't trained properly as I didn't meet him till he was six. He was a rescue also. Actually, he just seemed to not be able to go a full night without a bladder incident. The rest of the time he was just fine. I didn't mind much though as like I said, he was a wonderful little guy.

My favourite breed is and always will be...

The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever - I love absolutely everything about them. Their appearance, high energy level, intelligence level, how quickly they learn things, their zest for life, etc. I could go on an on. They are the perfect breed for me.

And then I love the following, and may or may not own them someday, depending on whether I feel brave enough to venture away from the Toller...

Belgian Shepherd (Groenendael & Tervuren)
Kooikerhondje
Mudi
Anatolian Shepherd - I doubt I could ever own one, but I absolutely love them.
Australian Shepherd
Dalmatian

Least favourites of mine would be...

Any hound - sight or scent, while I love both in appearance and personality, I have a really hard time living with either for more than a week. My patience level just isn't high enough for them I guess.

Boxer - Again, I don't have enough tolerance/patience for them.

Anything in the toy group excluding Papillons -Anything under 20lbs just doesn't appeal to me.

Any of the terriers -They just aren't my type at all for various reasons.

Anything with a super long (Beardie, Afghan) or corded coat (Puli, Komondor). - Just too much maintenance for me.

Don't get me wrong, I do like the breeds mentioned right above, I just can't live with them personally. I like to visit them.

Top 10 Favorite:

1. Working/Farm Australian Shepherd (well, duh...)
2. W/F Border Collie
3. Rottweiler
4. Fila
(no real order after this)
5. Well-bred Golden
6. Belgian Terv
7. Great Dane
8. Cavalier
9. Papillon (recent convert)
10. Rough collies...providing I can find a really good pair of ear plugs. ;)

I have one least favorite ever, then it's mostly dogs that I just won't set out to own:

1. Wire-haired Fox Terrier. I have never met one I've liked and they're rather popular around here, so I've met my fair share.
2. JRT (let's just go ahead and say terriers in general)
3. Beagles
4. Dachshunds
5. Bassets
6. Labs (yes, even after Virgo. 99% of the labs I meet are spastic and dumb as a box of retarded rocks.)
7. Schkipperkes...great little dogs, I just can't deal with the hair
8. Most chihuahuas...there are some neat ones out there obviously, just hard to find
9. Weimeraners
10. Vizlas (the last two...whiney whiney whiney and neurotic as the day is long, at least in my experience. Again, pretty popular dogs around here, so I've met a lot)

If you don't go deaf first. lol
Really, a Collie bark can shatter glass. What I do notice though is Tosca really only barks annoyingly when she's bored. A collie is not a good dog to let out in the yard alone for long periods. The only other barking she does ad nauseum has to do with the fact that every squirrel in the city decided to move onto my land. Indoors, she's pretty quiet, save for the moaning and groaning.

Papillon (I'm not a toy person but I've never met a Pap that wasn't loaded with personality)
That's exactly how I feel about paps and I'm not a toy person either. Darn them for being so addictive! They are such characters.

9. Papillon (recent convert)
Aha, I see I'm doing my job well. ;)

Don't I know it...there is a Collie who comes to daycare pretty frequently...his ENTIRE day is spent running the perimeter of the playground and barking non-stop. All day. At the top of his lungs.

Favorites (in no particular order except for the first two):
Border Collie
Rottweiler
Labrador Retriever
GSD
Great Dane
Redbone Coonhound
ACD
Australian Shepherd
Golden Retriever
Greyhound
Siberian Husky
I also like Chihuahuas but they don't fit with me as well as other breeds, that mostly at least medium sized and fit me better temperament wise.
And. . .I really also like:
Kelpie
Portugese Hound
Fila
Ibizan Hound
Lundehund
Belgian Malinois
Belgian Tervuren
Greater Swiss Mountain Dog
Bernese Mountain Dog
PWC and CWG
Bullmastiff
Newfoundland
Great Pyrenees

I don't really dislike any dog breeds but I can't easily picture myself with wirecoated terriers like the Cesky Terrier, Dandie Dinmont Terrier, Westie, Skye Terrier, Scottish Terrier, Sealyham Terrier, Bedlington Terrier, and others in that group. Though I like meeting well behaved dogs of those breeds.

Nope, I gotta agree with your first opinion. I have been around a whole bunch of cockers........male or female. I have yet to meet one that didn't piddle. I don't mean a housebreaking issue, I mean weak bladders in general..............Just google it, I am sure that would be the top complaint about them. I know that was the only complaint my aunt had with any of hers....EVER!

Other than that, they are very pretty, smart, and entertaining. I just don't want my dog greeting me at the door and leaving little droplets everywhere! :lol-sign:

I forgot to put shih tzus/lhasas on mine...awesome puppies that grow up to be monsters. I can almost guarantee that on any given day at work, if something is going to bite me, it's going to be one of those two breeds. The groomers feel the same way, even with dogs they've done for years, they still have to watch out.

I was only saying that its not a breed problem as a whole. Not every single Cocker has "piddles". Mine don't. And yes for SOME Cockers it can be a housebreaking issue.

But im not debating im just saying what I know as a Cocker Spaniel owner. And friend of other Cocker Spaniel owners.

the bigger the better?

How about this one?
BIGGGGGG

kidding only. And I am unsure whether it is real or just photoshopped.

I LOVE ALL WELL BEHAVED DOGS.

I noted that bigger breeds are more favourite in western coutries. Even for the big dogs which look like a construction site dog here in HK or the dogs picking up food from rubbish bin, many people like them in this forum. I repeat, I LOVE ALL WELL BEHAVED DOGS which can be a trustworthy lifelong partner. So I also like the unwanted Chinese mixed breed. But I was facing a cultural gap when I first found this forum. I was thinking how people could say those dogs are beautiful. Just because the definition of beautiful is different here.

The case is totally different in Hong Kong. Here you can see all expensive breeds, Chihuahua, toy poodle (tea-cup poodle is hottest and most expensive, say US$2000, NO ONE want a standard poodle), bicoh (wrong spelling). I think part of the reason (also my reason) is the space problem. People here do not have much place like you. We are living in apartments (average 500 sq feet). We do not have any front or back garden. ALL of the public housing and 60% of private housing do not allow us to keep any pets. For the whole HK, we only have 5 tiny dog parks (must be ultra tiny based on your standard, I saw the photos on this forum. I even saw a lake!!! Very nice environment). The closest one will take me 1.5 hours drive to get there. That's why a smaller breed is more feasibile for us. Several dog societies here keep protesting on the discrimination on dogs but seem not much can be helped.

I admit that I did not do much research before buying my 99. We came across a pet shop and my gf saw a very cute poodle puppy. Both of us could not go away without him. And I am still happy with that decision. I also like large breed but that will impose extra financial burden (much more food) and space requirement in my home.

I do hate ppl treat their dogs unlike a dog. People here like dressing their dogs like a human or even a fashion model, putting them in a baby car, feeding them with the most expensive, but inappropirate food. Shame on them. I did join some activities of a club called Poodle Club. Some of the poodles just stayed in their baby car and the owner kept feeding BBQ food to them (it was a BBQ party for us), using fan to keep them warm and claiming that their dogs were afriad of dogs so they did not want to go out... :hail:

I'm probably the only one that will put chow at the top of the list .. *L*

1) Chow - love the looks of the rough chow (moderate to open faced), love the challenge as a trainer too!
2) German shepherds - not American lines - excellent companions, devoted, loyal, intelligent, highly trainable .. you just have to accept the shedding .. *L*
3) Australian shepherd - had one years back, she was an amazing frisbee dog!
4) Standard poodle - the ones I've met are good companions - smart and funny.
5) Pomeranian - just because they're like little chows .. *L*
6) Shibas - just like those nordic/spitz breeds
7) Akitas - same reasoning ^^
8) Belgian Malinois - amazing athletic, intelligent dogs - just a LOT of energy.
9) Pug - had one in class once that I just fell in love with.
10) Eurasier - another spitz breed.

I find it interesting to read people's likes and dislikes .. they're based pretty much entirely on what one has experienced so far. It makes you wonder sometimes what happened for people to make the choices they have.

As far as breeds I don't like .. I can't pinpoint specific breeds. I don't prefer dogs that are aggressive (human OR dog), overly shy, too laid back OR too hyper, ones that drool a lot, or ones that are artificially cropped or docked. I also tend to prefer ears that are upright and not floppy .. I don't know why.
