this is tough, because i haven't had experience enough to make a judgement call on many breeds. some of them i like because i love the way they look [bad way to judge a dog] or what i have heard of them [limited way to judge a dog], or because i met one dog that happened to be of that breed that i liked [limited again - not all dogs of a breed have the same temperament]. all the same, in no particular order, here is a it's-too-early-to-think-of-lists list:

dogs i would consider owning or at least admire from afar:
-rottie [have been an owner and researched the breed]
-irish wolfhound [adored from afar, i have always been facinated with this breed and would love to learn more, though i doubt i would ever own one]
-tibetan terrier [sylvie is half, and they are not true terriers]
-boston terrier [how can you resist those faces? though i don't know if i could handle another terrier...]
-chi's [i hate 90% of the ones i have met, but that 10% facinated me!]
-pugs [i want a pug!!! but i never will due to the shedding]
-standard poodles [with puppy or utility cuts! i don't think i've ever met a smaller than standard that i liked, but i love the biggies if they aren't froufrou']
-bulldogs [english and french]
-pits/amstaffs/staffies [mostly just researched and love the look]

there are more, but that's all i can think of this time of the morning

dogs i will never consider owning but respect others' love of them [though i may not understand it myself]:
-chowchows [never met one that liked me or vice versa, they've all been mean and wouldn't want to deal with the shedding]
-akitas [see above]
-mini schnauzers [we probably had three over the course of my growing up years and they all drove me nuts, the ones i've met that other people owned were worse. i'm sure there are nice ones out there, i just haven't met any yet!]
-afgan hounds [i don't understand]
-most hounds in general
-chinese sharpeis [we had a couple when i was growing up, i don't hate them, but i would never own another]
-bichon frises

top ten faves:
(in no particular oreder)
1: great dane: i love their looks in general, just regal looking natural or clipped eared, they have a wonderfull goofy personality but can be strong scilent and are so attatched to their people.
2: Chihuahua: (when bred and raised right) there so much big dog heart in such a compact easy to travel with package, there smart and would be one of the few breeds i feel could be people in little fur coats, they are also mischevious and so loyal to their people.
3: Staffordshire bull terrier: they look stunning and have a personality to die for, they love everyone especially children and always look like their smiling.
4: Standard poodle: you cant get a smarter dog than a poodle and mix it with their eagerness to learn, plus their stunning good looks (i also love natural coated corded poodles) its a full package
5:Cocker Spaniels: (again well bred) their happy go lucky, love everyone always wanna play and be loved kinda dogs! and they have the most "puppy dog" eyes ever
6: English Mastif: what can i say, there gorgoues big lumbering gentle giants who could kill you by sitting on you, who doesnt love a dog like that
7:Chinese crested: there fun, personable and whats not cute about a dog that looks and walks like a tiny little horse!?
8:Dobernmans: ive never had one but the few ive met are stunning, smart, dignified and lovely!
9:Shiba Inu: easy, they look like foxes!
10:Irish wolfhound: their just gorgeous with sweet personalities
(as you can see my tastes vary like crazy lol)

LEAST favorite dogs
(no particular order, no offence to anyone they just dont fit my world for whatever reason)
1:Toy poodle: ive never met one that didnt have an attitude (and its because all their owners were nutz) im sure they are a wonderfull breed, but not for me.
2:Chihuahuas: (yes there my favorites too) i HATE those that have been badly bred and raise by morons who want nothing but a fashion acessory, those chihuhuas are usually so confused at wat the world wants they are insane. i HATE them for the fact their so cute that they are "mass produced"
3:Afghan hounds: i think they are ALL born deaf, or at least with an inability to listen...possibly the most untrainable dog ever. (though i think there gorgoues!)
4:Husky: can we say hair, and noise and more energy than the energizer bunny!?
5:Beagle: we adress 2 issues here, the noise AND the fact they too are born "deaf"
6:yorkies: gorgoues dogs, but simply too terrier for me
7:Boston terrier: ive yet to meet one thats not 100% entirely adorable AND insane!!!
8:Lab: for some reason labs are what i consider crotch dogs, all those ive met not only insist on sticking their norses in your crotch, but refused to remove it no matter how much you push them away, i dunno why, this is the only breed ive ever had this problem with. plus they shed like crazy.
9:bedlington terrier: they simply look...funny in a none good way
10:visla: stubborn and high maintenence, the ONLY breed ive ever been bitten by was a visla!

Top 10 Favorites
American Cocker Spaniel- smart, loving, willing to please, beautiful, clowns.
Pitbull- loyal, smart, beautiful.
Clumber Spaniel- my dream dog next to anouther Cocker. I just love their personalities and looks. They are amazing dogs.
Saint Bernard- The sweetest dogs I have ever met were Saints or Saint mixes.
Dalmatian- Working Dalmatians to be exact. Smart, loyal, and protective. I also love the coats and the clowny behavior.
Miniature Poodle- SO smart and loyal more rough and tumble than you might think.
Siberian Husky- beautiful, SMART, agile, loves to work, loyal.
Chi's- I have just grown up around them and love them.
Corgi's- Anouther future breed for me I love their personalities.
Rottweiler- They are so full of character and just big teddy bears. I also respect their power and size.

Top 10 Least Favorites (not worried if I hurt anyones feelings im just being honest).

German Shepherds- I just can't stand the hair. I like them at someone ELSES house lol but really thats my only problem with the breed.
Doberman- just not a fan I know a few and find them annoying.
Boston Terrier- just not a fan I don't think their cute and most I have met are unstable and not friendly.
Labrador Retreiver- Never met a perfectly stable one. Been attacked by three on three seperate occasions. All purebreds. And I don't like the looks of them. Now give me a lab mix any day.
English Toy Spaniel- First reaction to seeing one.......Ewwww
Jack Russel Terrier- never met a stable one or one you could trust.
Yorkshire Terrier- Or as I like to call them "Fountains"
Alaskan Klee Kai- *shudder* there is nothing right about a mini Husky
Pom- "Fountains" and biters I have only ever met ONE stable Pom.
Japanese Chin- See English toy spaniel.

What's with all the small breed hate? LOL For the most part small breeds are all I am interested in as I want to be able to easily transport, pick up, clean up after ect.
I myself definitely do NOT hate small dogs. I just prefer a dog of size for myself. So naturally, a smaller dog wouldn't make my list. I can make a whole list of small dogs I think are cute, but I wouldn't get one. I just would rather walk beside my dog than carry my dog, which makes me opposite of you when it comes to dog preferences. But hey, that's what makes the world go 'round.

I actually love the looks of Wire Haired Fox Terriers and Airedales. But I had three Min Schnauzers as a kid and, although I loved them very much, I just don't think I would pick out a terrier as a dog at this time in my life. While you haven't lived till you have had your eardrum shattered by a Collie bark, it's nothing compared to the incessent yapping of a Min Schnauzer.

Hmm... I've been thinking on my least favorite breeds and I really think I don't have any.

Let's just say there are many breeds I'd never own... spitzes and terriers mainly and many toy breeds.

I like individual dogs, just can't see myself ever owning them. All my bad dog experiences have been with spitzes and nordic breeds. Actually, all of them have been Eskies or huskies... maybe I'm a magnent for bad nordic dogs?

Oh, I also forgot schnauzers. I'm not too keen on the ones I know either. I think it is lack of training really. But man do they BARK!

EDIT: Actually, all the dogs I don't get along with, I can pretty much fault their owners in some way for letting them be that way. Our neighbor's husky is terribly socialized, pulls the man everywhere, attacks small animals... The toy eskies left outside and attacking everyone that came by their house.... hyperactive yorkies that never shut up... my friends mini schnauzer who is spastic because he is bored... really all those traits come down to the way the owner handles the dog imo. Kind of bad to fault the dogs or the breed.

lol obvious love of the Spitz's and just don't think a toy would work out well for me... don't mean to offend so hopefully nobody takes an offense and sorry if I happen to spell the names wrong :)
I definately don't take offense. And I don't think anyone should. Everyone has their own opinions on breeds and there's no point in getting mad over someones opinion. Some people are afraid of hurting others feelings over this. But come on its so senseless to have hurt feelings because someone dislikes your breed.

Lol just my little bit ;) .

Favourite Purebreds...
Dog breeds that I would call my least favourite... well I like all dogs so I'll just call it dog breeds that wouldn't work for my lifestyle.

1. Chihuahua(sorry if I spelled that wrong
2. Cocker Spaniel
3. Shih Tzu
4. Pomerainian
5. Toy Poodle
6. Pappilion
7. Pug
8. Bichon Frisse
9. Pekingese
10. Maltese

lol obvious love of the Spitz's and just don't think a toy would work out well for me... don't mean to offend so hopefully nobody takes an offense and sorry if I happen to spell the names wrong :)
No, I don't take offense, though I think you should really meet Beau. He tends to change most people's preconcieved notions about toy dogs LOL.

Oh and it's papillon btw. Don't feel bad, many people can't spell it. :lol-sign:

(in no order)
Mastiff
Malamute
Chesapeake
Dutch Shepherd
Saint Bernard
Greyhound (honorable mention to Whippets, Saluki and Iggies)
Airedale
AMERICAN WATER SPANIEL- A glorious dog in a plain brown coat.
Giant Schnauzer
Rottie
-----
Don't like...in little order. Its not to say I wouldn't even own one, since I don't have a reason to REALLY dislike them, they're just my least favorite, which is subject to change in 5 minutes.
American Cockers (Often ill bred fuzz balls, that wouldn't know a woodcock if it bit them)
JRT- Insane little dogs. Have their strong points, but not the dog for me.
Cavaliers- Too many strange health problems.
Irish Setters (See American Cocker)
Labrador, Golden Too popular and I like Chessies better ;)
Hairless breeds. No, never, ever, ever.

Ah it all depends... they are, for the most part pretty head strong and independant and there trainability is limited, in that they most often listen to you when they see something in it for themselves... there has been many times I will tell mine to come and they look up at me as if to say "What, are you stupid I found something here much more interesting then you are!" and ignore me. So I guess it depends on how you mean bad experience... but most people I know feel nordics aren't for them for that alone :p

funny thing i looked up spitz's on Wikipedia and it has the Pappilon listed as one... anybody know if that's accurate or just another case of wikipedia posting the "truth"

I have low tolerance for dogs that are jumpy, yappy, and dumb as a brick no matter what the breed. An annoying dog is just that, no matter the breed. I love Shibas anyway.
Thats basically my thoughts, although instead of Shibas, thats my Greyhound/sighthound fixation. In many ways, they fit the dumb as a brick stereotype, but who cares when you can fly?

Well it's not that I have anything against Toy dogs per say or any preconcieved notions about most of them... however I just can't see hooking a team of Pappilons up to a sled and actually getting anywhere unless I had a small fleet of them... and even then the expense of all those tiny custom harness' would be outrageous :p

Same kinda thing for winter camping or the backpacking I do. In the winter the nordics are great even with just one of mine in my tent with me, well it gets warm enough that you can't see your breath anymore and they can carry weight... Somehow though I can't see putting a backpack with 10lbs of stuff, or hitching anything to a toy breed... or anything significant compared to what I can hitch up right now :)

My list is mainly practicality for the lifestyle I like to lead :)

Pixie, I lived with a man for several years and he had a Cocker and that is my only experience with the breed. I found him to be a wonderful, very sweet dog, very flexible and always smiling. He was great with my cats too. The only complaint I can make about him was his lack of bladder control.

Someone else mentioned Irish Setter and I did have one of those early on in my marriage. This dog was beautiful but absolutely brainless, I am not kidding. He was hardly trainable, very clumsy and really not too bright at all. He chewed the leg off a desk and wasn't smart enough to move when it came down. This is my example of a beautiful dog I love to look at but would never take a chance on owning again. Fortunately my brother in law fell in love with the dog so Finney moved in with him. Through the years, that dog destroyed an entire house, no kidding.

Wow, you just described my friend's Irish setter to a tee.

Oh no I understand totally. I have no need for a sled dog, so why would I get one and tie it up in my yard with nothing to do? (cough neighbors cough)

Okay, I'm totally laughing at the fleet of papillons pulling a sled. xD That might work, they're fast little buggers hehe.

First off I want to say im not upset I see where your coming from ;) .

Im not surprised. For some reason I hear that alot about Cocker Spaniels (that they pee all over the place). Thats why before we got Tucker I was alittle nervous about how it would work out. But we never had a problem with him. And then there was Maggie who lived outside for the first year of her life. She is already house broken (brought her home in september) and doesent have a problem. I want to say that its in some cases medical/Psychological, and others its just poor house training.

Thats like the dog Otis I have agreed to train. He's a Cocker Spaniel who I almost got for myself but his owner and I want to work with him a bit first. I just think he has never had the proper house training and it also could be medical and told his owner she might want to get him checked. But I really beleive he was just never properly trained.

And if I am right on this I think MafiaPrincess, Brattina, and Tessa's cocker spaniels all don't have that problem. Im still kind of researching it all to decide what makes the Cocker Spaniel known for the weak bladder. Lol just my little speal on that one ;).

Well, I've known a TON of American cockers and none of them were nippy, none of them were stupid, and none of them had house training issues. (I swear where I lived cockers were the 'in' thing. ASCOB of course. We had 6 on our street and my friends had two, dad's friends had 2, etc) I really don't know where they get all those bad stereotypes. All the ones I've known have been great dogs.

I agree with ToscasMom that collies would take the top 2 or 3 spots, but I'll try to do this:

Rough Collie
Smooth Collie
Golden Retriever
Labrador Retriever
Pembroke Welsh Corgi
Standard Poodle
Bernese Mountain Dog
Belgian Tervuren
Newfoundland
Great Dane

Hey if you end up with enough of them try it sometime :p People have hooked almost every dog you can think of at some time to a sled. I've seen pictures of a team of Jack Russels before. To funny.
