By three measly screws. I got all the wiring harnesses unhooked and out of the way and the only thing left in my way is three measly phillips head screws that's holding the bracket keeping the ECU in place. They're shoved back in a space that is all of about 2 inches of clearance and I don't have a rachet that small. I don't even have a screwdriver that small.

:wall:

JJ is coming home early from work to help.

Well the part's out and in the mail. It's being over nighted both ways, so I'll hopefully have it back by Thursday and will have the car again in time for the weekend.

I also am thwarted by screws tonight. My laptop decided it doesn't want to charge anymore, so I'm trying to take it apart to see if something inside is loose or broken that I can fix. It turns out that I don't have a screwdriver small enough to fit some of the screws, so I can't get more than the keyboard off of it.

Ya know I have the perfect tool for just such an occasion but I'm not at home so I can't post a picture of it and can't find anything online.

Anyways, it's like an 'I' but where at the end of each seriff is a head (phillips, flat, torx, and...I forget what the other is). It's compact and you can use the leverage of the other end to turn the screw. Purty handy.

ETA: Oh here we go! Imagine this but with the two melded together to form an 'I' and with different heads.

So basically it's an Alan Key with the ends being in the shape of a flat-head or phillips-head screwdriver, instead of an Alan Key?

Hurry, someone think of a really cheesy screwing joke for this thread!

Seriously, though, YAY! You'll have your car fixed when I'm there! And we can go places! Won't it be AWESOME?

I think I may have a bit of a sugar rush going on right now..

No, because it's not shaped like an Alan wrench, it's shaped like the letter 'I'.

Dude, that would have been the perfect tool. I still probably couldn't have gotten the ECU out on my own though, there was a hidden bolt that I didn't know about and it turns out that all the screws had Lock-Tight on them.

ECU is what Skip posted...basically it controls the transmission and shifting and crap. I hope to God this fixes it...I can't afford to rebuild my tranny right now and Toyota is still insisting that even though 95% of post-2000 RAV's are having this issue, there haven't been enough complaints to warrant a recall.

Toyota doesn't issue recalls. That's a big part of the reason they're perceived as being so reliable -- NO RECALLS. They refused to even acknowledge the Mysterious Black Sludge that was turning up in late 90s Lexus and Toyota engines, but they made a buttload of money on selling replacements and rebuilds to their customers.

They had a recall on an O2 sensor in the cat. converter. I've had that part replaced...or at least it was still under warranty. Either way, I didn't have to pay for it.

I'm kind of leaning towards Subaru for my next car anyway, if I don't get a 4Runner, they're a tad more practical out here. No extra charge for 4wd vs 2wd, it's all-wheel drive automatically and included.

Awesome? Maybe.

Bad influences? Yes.

Besides, you're the one who harassed me about it enough that I actually checked to see if I could afford a plane ticket back. If you hadn't, I would just not have checked and kept my money. So whose fault is it? :p Yours, obviously.

XP, I got home a week and a half ago and spent the entire time wishing I'd stayed longer. (The endless **** I had to deal with from the second I got home helped with that.) So I found a cheap ticket and am flying back for part II of the first real vacation I've had in 5 years. I figure it's overdue. My mom basically ordered me to, anyway - to say life has been stressful in the last two months would be an understatement, and it's good to get away from the nonsense. (Example: I'm basically not allowed to leave the house without the dog. If I do, I have to practically beg to go. And my dad's working from home now, so instead of being confined on weekends, it's all the time. It's a control thing with him.)

Edit: ZOOM GET A SCOOBARU. STIIIIIIIIII. . .

In response to your edit, do you have an extra $30,000? Because between needing to pay off what's left on the RAV and buying the Subie I'd like to have, that's probably about what it's going to cost, once you also figure in re-tagging, plating and testing.
