We got a letter in the mail today saying that I will be getting my last social security/child support check from my Dad (who is deceased) this week.

The tenants who rent the upstairs from us just came down and gave their 30 days notice.

If anybody knows how it is physically possible to support a four person household on $12,000 a year, that info would be great now.

We were barely getting by before.

Quite simply, we're f***ed.

Thanks Ali.

Grammy, it's my Mom who makes the money. My sister (19) has been looking for a job for a while but nobody wants to hire someone who's going to leave at the end of the summer, I will be starting work on Monday and I'm thinking now that most of it will be going to bills and stuff but it's not going to make much of a difference, and my 8 year old sister.

Doubtful. Just a high school diploma doesn't get you much these days, this is actually an improvement over her last job and she has few skills.

Are you sure your mom wouldn't be able to find a job that pays a bit more? I'm a stereotypical poor college kid and I make more than that. I had something else to add, but it's probably going to come out wrong, so I'll leave it out.

I'm sorry, Lauren. :( I really encourage your mom to search for a better job, though. My mom has done very well for herself, and she just barely made it through high school.

If you ever need to talk, I'd be more than willing to listen.

Okay. Practical stuff.

Your 8 year old sister will qualify for some kind of food stamps and possibly some other stuff.

I would say that your mom would probably qualify for rental assistance, but in order to qualify any children 18 or over, unless they are still in high school, would probably have to move out. Those kinds of regs change, though, so it would be worth a look.

She can probably sign up and get help on utilities.

As a single mother, she probably is also eligible for some good training/education aid that will not only get her trained for a better paying job, but even help with some living expenses in the meantime.

((((((((((((((((((((HUGS))))))))))))))))))))) It can be a damnscary world out there.

OH man. :( It's barely possibly to support a familiy of one on 12,000 a year anymore...I've done it and it blows.

That being said...what is your mother doing now? I know you can make at least twice that working at QuikTrip (gas station if they're not familar out there)...temp agencies...if she knows her alphabet and can speak passable English, she could probably pull in a bunch of assistant jobs for a little...heck even holding a "slow" sign for a road crew pays over $10/hour. Sign up with Passion Parties, Arbonne, Pampered Chef...if anything it's a very part time thing with at least *some* money coming in.

I know something will come through for you!

I really don't know what to say- I couldn't even imagine supporting myself on $12,000/year. I'm really sorry to hear about that :(

Like Renee said alot of utility companies have hardship programs, look into them, welfare is a definate, there are health care programs that will offer free or nearly free
care for children under 18. Food stamps a definate too.

The only shame attached with getting assistance is when the person isn't doing anything for themselves and is just expecting to be looked after; that's certainly not the case here! It's difficult enough for a woman to make a living wage in a lot of places, let alone one with three dependents!

Your mom is brave. She doesn't have a choice, but in her situation, sometimes just facing one more day takes a great deal of courage!

Check out this site. It's a list of one stop centers in PA. I've dealt with a couple of one stop centers in NY and they are great. Very helpful with finding work, writing resumes, getting training. They'll help get financial aid with education ~ they would have been able to send me to school for vet tech for free.
