I think that means, in addition to your own dogs, you can't have more than 2 other dogs, not your own living with you. Probably to stop "rescue" people from becoming hoarders or having a boarding kennel without getting zoned and licensed as a kennel. '

Other than that, I think another test of constituionality is in order. I fail to see how any of these ordinances are constitutional. How can you deem my dog viscious just by its breed???? You obviously have more proof that he is a perfect representation of the canine community, yet they need no burden of proof to punish you.

These laws are commonplace all over the US and Canada. All over the world. Owners of all breeds of dogs need to make sure they *know* what the dog laws are in a place they are considering moving to, and that goes extra for people who own breeds subject to breed bans.

Sorry you're going through this, although I admit to being a little perplexed why you as a Doberman owner didn't make sure of all this stuff before moving there.

I did make sure. I called and Eric called because he didnt think I did. I talked to the guy in charge of the county office and he talked to a bylaw guy. We were told that because Jazz was intact it would be $20. They knew her breed when we called

Perhaps it's time to try and get some exposure / backing from animal organizations, news stations, newspapers, etc. Make some noise.

And if she's suited to it, get Jazz therapy dog certified. It could help. If therapy dogs are allowed where other dogs typically aren't, then it would definitely undeline the banality of them trying to make you muzzle her just to go for a walk.

Don't take it lying down. That's how they (the government) even got THIS far in the systematic removal of our rights.

Jenn, have you looked into hiring a lawyer? Preferably someone experienced in fighting BSL.

Whether you are planning on moving ASAP or not, I'd get a lawyer now. If you are planning to fight be ready for anything. This sort of small-town power dispute turns nasty fast.

Actually, if you want to be careful, if there is somewhere you can send Jazz for a while: family, friend, breeder . . . I'd consider it. I'm honestly more scared of local yahoos like this then state or national authorities, or even those in big cities. Officals in podunk little places often think that they are really hot crap, because no one has ever taken them on with serious legal firepower . . . basically, they think they always win, and that can make them dangerous.

Sorry to sound alarmist, but the lawyer in me (even if I can't give you legal advice) is inclined to say be ready for the worst.

I'm sorry to be the pissy one here.... but what do you think is going to happen? If I would move and buy a place, I would never, never simply rely on some County Clerk to tell me the details of their laws. I would dig in until I saw it black on white.

I am all for fighting BSL.... but getting the news for what? Because you own a breed that's listed as vicious and have to abide by restrictions and laws that already passed before you even moved there?

how about getting the news involved because you have a dog that is clearly not vicious in the slightest, yet is being persecuted as those she was purely because of her breed?

Sounds like a good news story to me. Heck, our stations play puppy mill stories at least once a month, I imagine they'd be happy to champion a new cause.

Because that's how JQP gets informed about what's going on around them. Because to not get the media involved means turning a blind eye to it, because not involving the media in our side of the fight allows this to continue, because there have been cases where existing BSL has been fought and the laws have been changed.

If it starts getting exposure, and ends up being a situation that looks like it may bring about some change, you may even get a lawyer who feels strongly about the cause / is an animal lover also, who wants to get in on the action sans fees. Never know!

Fighting BSL is one thing and I would never say anything against that... quite the contrary.
I just don't think that this instance is a good...reason to fight BSL. Yes, she got misinformed by someone... but that is why you can't rely on other people to give you such information.... you look into it yourself.
