anything I should know? I Know they are assertive and stubborn dogs and I want that instead of getting a weak minded dog. I also know they are great companions and great with kids. Their are few dogs in my neighborhood. just one young bulldog that is my neighbor who is docile. (she\he even comes to you). my cousin as a black lab and husky and never had a problem with them. even got a Husky to respect me after one day.

Would be able run with them for a a hour plus every day, obiedience and be alpha male from the begining because I know these types of dogs are very strong willed

Sounds like you are on the right track!
Ive never had a pit, but I do have hardheaded breeds. Half the battle is knowing that you have to be in charge from day one. The next step is knowing what that entails.
Here are two kennels which I just love. You should talk to them about any questions you have, Im sure they will gladly educate you even if you dont plan on getting on of their pups.

Just LOVE their dogs!

I don't want a Bull Terrier, American Staff Terrier and Bull Terriers are too different dogs. the Bull has a bigger face and is shorter.

thanks for the page. I'm reading it

thank you for replying, what type of dog do you have in your picture? I can't see the face but looks like a Rottweiler because of the tail

I went into the websites. wow that lady is very strict about who gets her dogs. It's more complicated than getting into college.

She is a cane corso

Now, to clear this up, do you want a pitbull, right? Not the little SBT guys? And not the eggheaded fellows either. The links I gave you, is that the breed you are looking for?

Yes, the lady is very strict! Any breeder worth getting a dog from is going to be that way :)

yes I said the AST from the begining. is there anything I should know or do before?.. from my experience Huskys are more strong minded and you have to mentally fight them to get them to submit

And with this breed, that is the way it should be. ;) She is protecting the breed she loves by only giving to deserving homes. A breeder that doesn't make sure you are a good home for their pups isn't worth buying from.

I know you did, but you kept bringing up "no BT" so I was confused as to where that was comming from.
Yes, sibes are hard headed beasts too. Besides the obvious dog aggression in the breed, there isnt much I can bring up. Just make sure they are allowed in the area and that your insurance isnt going to drop you. Then make me jealous and get a hartagold pit!

Have you considered adopting from a shelter? There are tons of wonderful pits/amstaffs/other bully breeds in shelters waiting for great homes...I hope you can do some research and look around before you make a final decision on where the dog comes from...:)

I did do some research. I think I will get a 1-2 year old. prices are around 70 dollars but pups get around 250.. I think thats alittle to harsh. I hope the neighbors won't get afraid when I walk around with a confident dog and they are all walking around toy dogs. :) (mostly toy dogs around here)

That's great!

And yea, its all part of owning a pittie...you gotta have a thick skin...cuz some people will definately disapprove...your job is to educate them and show them just how wrong they really are about your buddy :)

American Staffordshire Terriers (aka Amstaffs) are a lot like American Pit Bull Terriers (APBT). They are both intelligen, stubborn, sweet animals with humans, but you have to watch out for aggression with other animals. You should have a game plan in place before you bring one home about how everyone in your family will treat the dog, how it will be trained, and have your first trainer lined up.

They are NOT the hardest dogs to own - BUT - if this is your first dog as an adult (meaning you had dogs as a kid, or this is your first dog ever) then you will be in for a very bumpy ride. This is not a beginner's breed.

Training using aggression on your part, instead of positive reinforcement, will not be suitable for this breed. Positive reinforcement works wonders even when they are in stubborn mode. Jerking, spanking, rolling, or trying to dominate the dog via force will lead to problems... as the dog may decide you aren't worth submitting to. Forcing a dog to fear you does not mean it will trust you.

Instead positive reinforcement mixed with NILIF, using treats, praise and firm rules, will get you to your goal much faster, as well as teach your dog to trust you.

Physically they are small stocky dogs (17-19" at the shoulders). They are about 50lbs or less. They come in many different colors and patterns. Unlike pit bulls they do not have red noses. The noses are always black in pigment.

They can suffer from hip dysplasia, temperment problems, eye problems, and heart problems. This is especially true of poorly bred Amstaffs.

I don't hit dogs. do you mean putting them on their back so their stomach show as a way to make you the alpha dog is wrong? all the books, show say thats the way it goes, except if you want to stare at them for hours

wow now thats 100% wrong from everyone I hear. Dog Whisperer does it all the time and every training book I read says you can either do that or stare at their eyes for hours until they go down
