There are some people who *can* do this effectively, but they are *NOT* the average dog owner. Yes, several books teach how to do rolls, and the Dog Whisperer does it all the time (but that's just it- he's the DOG WHISPERER, and you and I are not). I would highly suggest to steer clear of that method of training, and stick mostly with positive reinforcement. If you want a predictable dog that is a joy to live with, then you must be a predictable and fair owner. When alpha rolls are done incorrectly (highly likely in the case of anyone who isn't *very* well-versed in canine behavior), you have a dog that begins to distrust you and view *you* as unpredictable- not such good traits in a leader, to be sure.

Especially if you're going into a breed like Amstaffs or American Pitbull Terriers, alpha rolls are a bad idea. I work in a stubborn breed as well, and they do NOT take kindly to harsh training methods, they literally shut down.

If you want to find ways to display your role as pack leader- I would suggest looking into the NILIF method of training (Nothing In Life Is Free). Far more effective, and far less *dangerous* than alpha rolling an animal.
