No boxer for me :(

Astro has basically overnight decided that he is King, no other males need apply for the position.

I tell you all, I love this dog but he is not easy. He has never made anything easy, from the time he charged me and body slammed me in a RG fit as a young pup to right now, deciding that only he is allowed to initiate play obnoxiously with other male dogs. The final straw was Astro taking a pot shot when the poor boxer turned and moved further away to the door - it was like Astro wanted to start crap!

I meet with the female Houla tomorrow. Maybe they will get along better, being opposite sex and all, but I'm not too hopeful. Houlas seem to be an assertive breed and if the past few days have been any indication, Astro has finally realized he's a mature Pei-terrier mix and also will have no inclination to back down.

He is still amazing with most dogs it seems, we met a new dog at the park and they did great together. Played and played and plaaaayed and it was like seeing the Astro I knew again. But she was sweet and deferent from the getgo, and didn't push him at all.

Sigh.

At least 60 dogs have been killed in a suspected arson at a Manchester Dogs' Home.
There are some really messed up people in this works,& it sickens me. Why would anyone ever set fire to a dog shelter?

Playing Fetch

My standard poodle Chippy is hilarious to play fetch with.

He found one of his balls today while I was out working in the yard and started throwing it around and chasing it himself so I thought a little game was in order.

So I throw the ball for him and he jumps around on the spot and looks everywhere except where the ball went.

I picked up another of his toys and threw it and once again he looks excitedly in entirely the opposite direction to where the toy went. He seems to do this a lot of the time when I try and play fetch with him. Sometimes I wonder whether he's just playing the clown on purpose but it makes me laugh so much.

It's been four months of Finn and the cats not exactly getting along and having to be trained together + separated when not.

It's going to be at least four more. If not more.

I'm stubborn and determined, and they do improve... slowly. But they have to be separated still and it's trying on my anxiety.

After four more months of this I think we'll know if it's doable or not. And if it's not... not thinking about that yet.

Dear dog and cats: CO-EXIST. Thank you.

On the plus side, we learned last night that Fiora and Barrett get along like a house on fire. So there's that.

I know those feels. Bloo is finally at a point where I could have her out dragging a leash with the cats, and I'd feel comfortable... but one of them actively picks fights with her. :(

That'd be Stan, here. If it were just Fiora we would likely be farther along. But Stan loathes Finn and therefore always puts Fiora on edge. Doesn't help that Finn reacts to them hissing. So if either hiss, he goes WAY over threshold and dives for them. Not aggressively, but heck if they know that.

Every one of them contributes to the problem in some way, which makes training very challenging. We do see progress, but it's molasses.

Have you tried working with just Fiora and Finn? Might be easier to get her comfortable first? I don't know, it's a crummy situation. Stupid cats. ;)

Yup! We'll put Stan in the bedroom area for awhile and work with Fi and Finn. They've progressed well, though still slowly. Thankfully our house is full of doors, so we can put the cats away in the bedroom hallway while Finn gets free run of most of the house, or I can be in the basement with Finn while Marshall is upstairs with the cats. Makes it easier for everyone to get quality time.

Someone send me an awesome 50 pound black Labrador bitch. Plzkthx. Age puppy to young adult. Michael can't say no if it shows up on our doorstep, right?!

(Can't have another dog right now, logically, but that doesn't stop the want.)

So of course after me lamenting his interaction with the boxer, Astro met a big, bold male terrier today and they were great. No troubles whatsoever, Astro brought out the pup in the terrier and the terrier told him off appropriately a couple times, which Astro responded appropriately to in turn. But mostly they just played and played and played for ages, no signs of the tension he had with the boxer.

The difference seems to be that if a male is more babyish than him (which is tough to do given Astro's personality around dogs, he's like a perpetual 5 month old - but somehow the boxer managed), it annoys him. As if he likes to be the baby and get the younger dog privileges, but he doesn't care for being pushed the way he himself pushes up on older dogs.

All the same, I'm making my second dog a female to safe.

Edit: didn't see your post DJEtzel, pictures nooooooooow :D what kind of pup? More details!
