Why are shelters so strict?
Shelters usually aren't strict. I got my dog from a shelter and we walked in, paid $100, TOLD them where we lived (offered no real proof- in fact the address on my license was wrong) and took him home same day. It's rescues that are strict and I think it's because they usually aren't in any hurry to place dogs because they're generally in good foster homes. I have volunteered with a greyhound rescue and they have quite a few requirements before you can adopt.

Same with Hank. My address was wrong on my ID too. They didn't verify anything. They didn't ask anything about my lifestyle or what kind of dog I wanted. I gave them $60 and walked out. I was there all of 15 minutes. Anyone could go get any dog in 5 minutes or so. They have a decently high kill rate (only a few years ago the live release rate was 26%!). They just want animals to go out alive and I can't blame them.

Holy Crap! Makes me SO glad you got Hank. I can understand wanting to get them out. The shelter we got Hugo from has a pretty low kill rate, but I still could have lied about everything because they didn't check at all. I showed them a piece of paper that said I could have a dog (that I totally could have printed myself) and they didn't even check with my landlord.

They have raised their release rate some the last few years thankfully. It's still somewhere around 50-60%, so still a fairly high kill place. I am very glad I got Hank too. He's a great dog and didn't deserve to be there. :(

Yknow, the least that puppy mill stores could do is offer free s/n.

I'm talking to one of my friends, and apparently one of her friends has three puppy mill dogs who will probably end up having puppies because they are against traditional s/n, and OSS is "too expensive".

And no dog is the same breed. And vet care for the dogs? Not really. I wish people would just not get pets unless they put the time and effort into doing their very frickin best to take care of their pet.
That is very frustrating..

I recently ran across a guy who in my opinion was doing everything wrong with his Chow puppy. On top of it he was talking about purebreds are only worthy dogs and how he will be breeding his Chow pup once he gets a little older..

Also, yesterday I was hanging out with a friend and her dog and this kid was like trying to annoy our dogs (Chloe is reactive and does not like kids..) she actually ran toward him before I saw him and I didn't step on the leash in time.. I called her and could see her thinking about coming back or going after him and then the kid ran.. which made her chase him so I yelled at her and she came back. I was nervous she was going to go bite him.. My friends dog is very nervous around people and the kid came back twirling a stick and holding it like a gun coming towards us. I was very blunt and told the kid to back up because our dogs would bite him.

He looked offended.. then he left and went and climbed over the fence into the "dog park" area at my apartment and was chasing the 2 little dogs in there. One owner leashed her dog after awhile and left. The other guy was on his phone not paying attention to his dog at all who was clearly getting very stressed with the kid and started nipping at him. The dog tried to hide and jump into his owners lap so the guy looked at his dog for a second and then went right back to looking at his phone..
I am pretty sure his yorkie bit the kid because at one point the kid jumped back and looked at his leg. But then he went and grabbed a stick and started chasing the dog.. this went on for quite some time and then the kids mother finally came home and called him in for dinner or something. So the kid leaves the double entrance first without the dog, but then he let the dog out!
What does the owner do? He just SLOWLY stops looking at his phone, SLOWLY gets up and SLOWLY walks out of the dog park area grabbing his stuff. Then he goes to following his dog around and using the flexi lead as a fishing pole tossing out the leash.. trying to hook it on the dogs collar? I am not sure. Either way he was never going to get his dog back. My friend sent her dog out as a lure and the dog followed her dog back and we eventually was able to catch his dog for him. But wow he was not making any effort or paying any attention to his dog. Makes me just as angry or even angrier than the kid!

Ok.. rant over! Sorry, people are just dumb and it's annoying.

Yeah, shelters are pretty easy. I mean, Roxie got returned how many times? All these problems later, and mind you she was under a year old when I adopted her, and they let us walk out with her after a few hours. We don't even have a fence.

Not to mention, same shelter is offering dogs and cats for FREE this weekend. Which imo is idiotic. But they keep bringing dogs from out of state so they need kennel room. I used to like Roxie's shelter, but these last few years it's gone downhill for a number of reasons imo.

At our lesson yesterday, one of the sheep took offense at Brisbane's haircut and headbutted him. Brisbane got to bite a sheep, which would have made his day if the ewe hadn't been seriously gunning for him. One of the resident border collies had to come save him.

We're planning a rematch in the near future. Briz vs #110.

Toast was being SUCH an asshole to Squash all day yesterday... up his his face scream-barking & snarking every time I turned around.

Today they are like two little peas in a pod, they can't get enough of each other.

Silly boys.

Booo, Abrams is starting to get some tartar accumulation on his teeth coupled with gingivitis. I've been majorly slacking on brushing, but I'm going to start up again now! Also just ordered some PetzLife Oral Gel for me to apply to his gums. I'm hoping that coupled with the brushing will help me postpone a dental for a bit. I always said whenever he had to have a dental was when I'd neuter him, and I don't want to neuter him yet! haha

omg. Why must we get such perfect dogs at the rescue?? This boy kills me and I want him so bad. He needs to build some confidence and he knows absolutely nothing as far as training goes, but he has so much potential. And he has the sweetest personality. Just wants to be loved on.

^ I would bring him home. Blitz might never look at me again but I would still do it!

He just looks sad but strong. I've seen to many dog movies. Go get the dog!

Bones? Cajun had some pretty decent tartar build up when we got her and I was intending on giving her a quick scaling when she was spayed. Didn't have to though, she gets bones pretty frequently and her teeth look great now.

He chews on *everything*, I can't really figure out how his teeth aren't staying clean because of that! Granted, not RMB, but he'll literally sit down for an hour or two and just chew on something.

Oh god, my koolie wait has grown exponentially after meeting Trav and Didgie. They are so quirky and friendly and full of personality, and watching Trav at the dog park was so much fun.

Traveler just laid across my shoulders and Didgie was making out with me and I was in heaven.
