Ok...so there is a sweet looking 3 month old Golden Retriever pup at the local shelter.
Boone is going to be 5 months old on the 29th, is house trained and basically turning into a great dog.
Boyfriend wants to adopt Golden pup.
Can we handle this?
Is it insane to even entertain the idea?
Lemme know what you think...I'd love to rescue him, but don't want to go crazy.

As long as you have the willingness and the time to exercise him both physically and mentally you can't go wrong.

Ok, we have daily trips to the dog park for about an hour where Boone romps and plays, may aswell just load another pup into the car!
We are starting class with Boone on the weekend, so we know what it takes to raise a good puppy.
I've just never had two dogs at once before...but my god!! Look at that little guy!
We would still have to go through the adoption process and hope he's still there when we arrive, but I think we may try for it.

Well there you go then go for it. Maybe take Boone to the shelter and introduce the 2 together to get a feel.

Good luck to you either way.

Yes, we would go meet the little guy, fill the adoption sheets and then go get Boone for an introduction and see how they got on.
Anybody else had two male pups at the same time who has advice? a yay or a nay?

Go for it. Sounds like you have the time and energy to take it on. Golden's are great dogs! My parent's have two, my in-laws have one and my cousin just got a puppy! Boone needs a friend:)

As far as two males........I've been trying to get the same answer. We are getting another pup here soon and we currently have a female. I've heard that we should get a Male and then have also heard that we should get a female. I did hear that two males are better than two females, but it may still have a lot to do with the breed.

I never had any problems with 2 males... he looks like a pretty layed back boy ! As you know, I'm very partial to Goldens !

Yes I know you're partial! haha
I think we are gonna go for it! I can't believe how much thought has to go into it. It really is like adopting a child, such a huge commitment. All the things that went through my mind. "Will Boone feel neglected? will he be accepted? do we have enough time for both?" YIKES!

I say go for it! But then again, I'm partial to 3 month old male goldens! :D I'm sure they will have a blast together. We're considering getting a buddy for Luke as soon as he's done with his obedience training. Good Luck!!

Generally, the bigger the dog, the longer the puppyhood. My golden didn't enter "dogness" until around 2 years old.

Ok good to know. Boone is already really laid back. He just lays around the house most of the time (after his walk and dog park time) each day. I was expecting him to be crazy for longer but he really seems to be settling down quickly.

I got my 2nd boy when KC my golden was 5 months old. Niko was 9wks when I adopted him from the rescue.
KC took to Niko almost immediately. He didn't know what to do at first, but then realized that Niko was another pup. KC went and got his favorite toy and dropped it on the couch where Niko was sitting. They we're instant friends. I've never had any problems with either of them fighting.
I also made sure that I would alternate taking them somewhere with me. I've heard that when raised at such young ages together they tend to get extremely attatched to each other and don't do well if something were to happen to the other.
The pic in my avatar is KC and Niko sleeping at the tender ages of about 2 1/2 yrs and 3yrs.

Thanks so much fastpitchchick! I fully intend on taking them to training classes seperately and spending time with them seperate for training. I hope they will get on very well, and be good friends. I don't want Boone to feel left out because he is the one that gets all the attention now.
I just want them to have a nap together, and I'll feel more relaxed after that haha
I wonder how long they can play together before they relax a bit haha

Oh yeah, I know I'm probably just dreaming, but will Boone help with housetraining the new guy?

My boys were really layed back from the beginning... but they were home grown. I bought a female who really didn't settle down until a year old. With Boone's personality , it should be a good match. Really depends on what the Golden went through . Do you know why it was given up ?? A Golden wants to please so much, they will usually take the attitudes of those around them. I never liked to be too rowdy with mine ...( my kids did that part , so I did the quiet approach ) So anxious to hear more !!

I don't know his background at all....at 3 month he looks to be in very good shape, it could just be that his family couldn't handle him. I don't really know, but this isn't a rescue he's in, it's s shelter, so I want to take him out of there pronto!
Yeah I don't like getting rowdy with my dogs either, they can do that with each other!
Will Boone help teach him ?

Boone should be a big help with all the training.! That's why I always recommended to my owners that they get another pup while their 1st Golden was still living. Not only made things easier, but helped the broken heart when they lost the 1st one.
